I proopsed 2 years ago, my fiancé knew ring type/size she wanted but I didn't spend that 3 months worth of salary.

That debt aspect is no joke. She just had to pay for her last year...

A lot of people don't realize you take on EACH OTHERS debt.

No need for a study. When you over extend yourself in the begining of the relationship with an engagement ring that practice is continued until eventually it begins to tear at the marriage.

Nope but it will effect you when you apply for things jointly.

I believe its up to both parties to develop a financial plan to tackle all debt they are bringing to the table. That way you can figure out who has the best health insurance, savings plan, and what have you to maximize income and pay what you owe.

Hopefully this is done before you propose and you understand that marriage is a partnership. And if its just student loan debt and not crazy amounts of credit card debt then how much can you fault her? She invested in her future and can hopefully maximize that ROI.

Hopefully this is done before you propose and you understand that marriage is a partnership. And if its just student loan debt and not crazy amounts of credit card debt then how much can you fault her? She invested in her future and can hopefully maximize that ROI.

If she racked up massive credit card debt, that needs to be taken care of before we get married. Hopefully it was for expenses along the lines of car repairs or medical bills that put her in debt and not just a spending habit.

 Once you get married, you share joint assets and your are joined together as one body. Either way, those loans will need to be paid off unless you go into the marriage planning to divorce (which is just planning to fail).

One of the biggest causes of marriage failure is money fights. Both parties need to be on the same general page how to handle finances. Otherwise your chances of getting a divorce are pretty high.
