F1 Official Thread - Grand Prix of Britain

What a stressful race

I was cursing when they didn't box after the rare slow Red Bull pit stop. That was track position.
But with the Hungary 2019 strategy, it boxed Red Bull in so they couldn't react.

I don't know whether it was a stroke of genius or not

Bottas just not there on race days and him holding up Lewis was not a good look. Maybe he knows his time is done.

5 wins in a row at a circuit to equal Senna's record. :pimp:

Good race for Danny Ric as well. Good to see him up there.

Ferrari's seem to have made a big step. Maybe they've sorted their tyre issues. Shame Ted isn't here to give us a rundown of the others in the race.

Crofty just mentioned something about Merc moving up on the all-time points leaderboard... really? How pointless is a stat like that???

Red Bull was definitely the faster car at Bahrain.

At Imola, they were also able to switch on the tyres faster which is why Max had that nice 5 to 6 second gap at the start.

Portimao is when I think Mercedes started to turn things around and understand the car more, especially with race pace.

Now it seems they have better race pace and Lewis is good at managing tyres too. On one lap pace I think it's still equal.

Monaco is going to be interesting but the Mercs have been better in the slow corners so I think they will be up there.

Marko just said, they didn’t call Max to the box (1st stop). Misunderstanding on Max’s side. That’s why the stop was 4s long.

wow 4.2 seconds for an unexpected stop. Red Bull are so good
He was under pressure and tyres were going so he must have done it himself.

Last year I remember him complaining after his tyres went and they wouldn't pit him.

That explains the radio message now that I think about it.

Honestly if they sorted out their tire management then they wouldn't be much between the two teams.

I can imagine how great it feels to be a Merc strategist, Checo must make the job so much easier  Great drive by Lewis during the third stint, RB and Merc do seem level on pace for the most part so the difference really comes down to having both drivers in the mix.

Enjoyed the Formula E race in Monaco yesterday, looking forward to seeing the kind of lap times the F1 cars can do around there now.

I haven't watched all the interviews yet, but was RBR cornered into not boxing Max? Had they boxed, they would have been stuck behind a lot of traffic?

I don't think Max had a fresh set of mediums to box for, so if he boxed for the softs earlier than he did, Bottas could have held him up and Lewis would still have ran away with it. Red Bull just has to do a better job of managing their tire allocation for the weekend, and also have a second driver within the Merc pit windows of course.

Noobie question. After the safety car leaves can the driver in 1st continue the race whenever they choose?

Once race control decides the safety car is coming in, the lead driver can back up the pack while waiting for the SC to return to the pits, and then they control the pace until the line, whether they decide to floor it from four corners before or creeping up to the line at slow speeds, nobody can overtake until they pass the line.

When the safety car (SC) period is about to end, the SC will turn off its lights, indicating that it will head back into the pits and racing can resume. For the rest of the cars following, when they see the lights turn off, that means it's time for them to prepare their cars to continue racing. At this point, when the SC goes back into the pits, the race leader effectively becomes the safety car. He can control the speed of the rest of the cars (in a safely manner, of course). Tactically, you want to time it so that the guy behind you doesn't get an equally good start, so that he can't overtake you. In Portimao, Bottas slowed right down, bunching up the rest of the field (completely legal)... and it was down to him on when to restart the race. In that race, he caught Lewis off-guard and was able to restart the race while Lewis was still weaving his tyres... this also allowed Max to get a good jump on Lewis. A win-win for Valtteri at the time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

It should also be noted that cars are not allowed to overtake until they pass the Safety Car Line... which is different at each track. It's usually around the last turn, before the start/finish line. SC restarts are definitely an artform.

Yeah, I thought his moves in F2 Bahrain were too much. You can't squeeze someone that far off the track and so close to the wall. Dangerous.

Mazepin on blue flags:

"I was dealing with these blue flags for first time in my life. I've previously never had a blue flag on a consistent basis, so it's a matter of learning just the same as driving. It took me about a good five, seven years to learn proper driving and it's gonna take me hopefully a few weekends only to learn the blue flags."

he better hurry up

Pastor made some questionable racing moves, but at least (as far as I know) wasn't an asshat. NM, meanwhile, is a proper creep.

Toto wasn't playing about on the radio.
Dunno how Mazepin is not ashamed to say he's struggling to move his car out of the way of other cars.
It's the same thing you do in Practice and Quali when someone is on a hot lap.

FIA need to play this on his radio when the leader come to lap him.

Blue Flags! Get out the way!
