Mariah Carey is among the A-listers who will be starring in Lee Daniels’ upcoming film The Butler (August 16th). And now, we’ve got a sneak peek at her character. Mariah will be playing Hattie Pearl, and apparently, Hattie Pearl was a slave. AND she worked in the cotton fields.

We’re sure many folks are going to having comments about Mariah and someone of her….aesthetic….playing a "field" slave….but this IS a Lee Daniels’ film. It’s supposed to make you question, wonder and debate. Not just say "Bish please."

In the film, Mariah will star alongside Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr, Lenny Kravitz, Robin Williams and Jane Fonda.

Oscars abound

Tired of hollywood and their ********. When will a movie about the real black struggle come. It's like they perpetuate this notion that things are always going to get better and that black people should be content. You guys might not feel the same way and that's fine.

This movie might be good though. Not knocking the fact that it will be watchable.

The acting will be superb... Oscars and emmies and whatever other stuff will be had

But the facts and underlying meanings will be deep. The subliminal and even blatant thought process will be expressed.

Black people will say it's inspirational to serve white people thru racism.. folks will.Change their twitter handle to "@_Butler_15"

Movie will die down.

Another one will hit in fall '14..

Lee Daniel? The director of Precious? Nah I'm good. That movie was so depressing.

no thanks.  I need some "black" movies about the modern urban experience

why did those die with the 90's?

the movie looks tight though...

definately appears to be like the type of movie to rack up nominations.

that cast is superb too.

Seems like a good film. Terrence Howard certainly had a good time.

As for Mariah, she shouldve been cast as a house slave role considering her complexion but that would probably significantly take away from her screen time.

Welp.  I'll go see it.

I'm sayin tho. Love Jones, The Best Man, The Brothers, Do the Right Thing (tho I think that was '89), The Inkwell, Friday, etc etc

They died because they ran out of black actors

Nah, they just didn't fit the strong stereotypes that Hollywood wants blacks to portray in films.

Maybe it's just me but I find it funny how black films get no accolades but if it was a white film (and I say this in regards to the actors) it gets praise. Takers and The Town were both crappy movies imo, however the Town gets more recognition.

Idk, The Town was pretty good IMO, and I'm certainly no Affleck fan. It's true that if the stereotypes are not outrageous they aren't going to promote it. But they really did run out of Black actors. Save for Do The Right Thing and Friday, add The Wood and Love and Basketball to that mix all of those movies has an overlap of at least one Black actor between them. They simply ran out. Black actors, successful and known Black actors are a minority within a minority. It's crazy.

CubaGooding jrs comeback?

Lol Lord knows he was struggling in movies like Snow Dogs and Boat Trip
