film "the butler" vol...mariah is playing WHO?

Yes realistically but I doubt ALL the light skin slaves worked inside.
Idk , I wasn't there.

mariah carey being a field slave doesn't even matter.

i'm sure there wasn't any rule that said that lightskinned blacks weren't allowed to work in the fields or something

just dissapointed that this is what brings all these big-name black actors out of the woodwork.

there had to be better ideas being pitched to any one of those people in the last 5 years, but this is the one that has them all coming together.

Its not always about what will bring them together but who. The right call from the right person, to the right people, matters.

We went from "The Help".........to "The Butler".  I hope folks see the agenda that Hollywood is pushing.

I guess their agenda has changed cause in the 70's black men were pimps, 90's black men were killing each other in every movie. The 2000's roll around and it was black love. Now they are shinning the light on the black man/woman that did something important but didnt learn about in school.

I feel we are making progress.

Anyone ever noticed Terrance Howard always playing an angry black man role?

Mariah would have def been a house slave for  2 reasons...

1.  She is too light to be in the field

2.  She is too fine and got too much body to NOT be one of massa's feel good girls.

sarcasm? I'm hoping this is sarcasm

No its not sarcasm. Hollywood has portrayed the black man in negative light far too long. I loved when the black love movement came about, cause previously black men referred to women as B's in movies. Some people are meant to be the the "Help" or the "Butler". At this point I rather see the Black Butler than Do-Boy or O-Dawg shooting up the hood. The Butler seems like movie that eventhough you are the help, you can still be a good contributing member of society and not just play into the stereotypical role.

I would really like to hear your take.

Mariah Carey should have played Marilyn Monroe instead.. And have the affair with freakin Cyclops aka JFK in the movie.

Hell is up with this thread. If What I got from the trailer is true then a black servant played a significant role in the civil rights movement. Yes he was a servant but he served the PRESIDENT OF THE USA closely and help sway opinion. There is nothing wrong when being a servant of that kind hell in certain situations. The movie isnt telling people the best they can do is serve people.

:{ so clear it's disgusting.

Yup.

Not supporting this BS. Just the title alone is a slap to the face and a step back for true Black progress.

FYI "light-skinned slaves" were not all house negroes and "dark-skinned slaves" were not all field negroes.

"Dark-skinned slaves" were actually coveted "house negroes" because they were looked at as expensive trophies in the twisted plantation psychology, they were also thought to be more obedient and better at controlling the rest of the slaves on the plantation. See Uncle Ben, Aunt Jemima, Stephen from Django etc.

Mulatto children were still slaves, free to be sold, killed, worked, raped etc. The lady of the plantation would often ensure that mulattoes were shipped off of the plantation or have babies killed as they were blatant proof of their husbands infidelity with an African. But many mulatto females were also kept in the house because the plantation owner knew that they were his children, even though they were still in bondage.

Thousands/millions of indigenous "light-skinned" Africans were also taken directly from the Bight of Biafra and subjected to the same inhumane treatment as their darker skinned kin.

All shades of Africans (as well as mulattoes) were subjected to brutal conditions and genocide level conditions.

The competition and mythology of "dark-skinned"/"light-skinned" is actually something that we Black people perpetuated after emancipation and we foolishly continue til this day.

Flicks like this make me realize what an uphill battle Spike Lee must've had to produce his body of work.
