First Round Game 2 Thread: San Antonio Spurs (7) vs. Dallas Mavericks (2)

--Not surprising. Can never sleep on the Spurs.
--All West match ups could have easily been split at this point. Lakers got lucky theyre not goin to OKC tied 1-1.

What makes the Spurs so dangerous is that they can kill you with the screen and rolls because Parker and Ginobili can beat you in different ways. If you're late guarding the screen, they'll slash all the way to the rim. If you decide to switch on the screen or go under it, they'll shoot the jumper. Then you have to help out and that's when they draw 2 defenders, leaving an open shooter like Mcdyess or dumping it off to Duncan for the easy layup/dunk. The Mavs don't have a threat like that in their backcourt. Kidd is just a spot-up shooter, Butler and Terry aren't very good at driving to the rim, and Barea is too small to be a good finisher inside consistently. But Roddy, he is the one guard who can do that on the roster. The kid's got a good jump shot, good floater, and has shown to be a pretty good finisher inside with his long arms. He brings that triple threat on those screen and rolls/pops.

Plus on defense, he can guard the PGs that Kidd can no longer guard while Kidd can take the SGs. It just makes too much sense for Dallas but Carlisle never gave him a real chance this year other than to fill in for injuries. If Carlisle gave him 15-20 minutes all season, he'd be a 10-15 ppg player and probably could have been huge for a playoff series, like Gibson for the Cavs in 2007. It's too late for him this year but next year, it's a no brainer. The kid needs to be starting.

roddy is a horrific defender. that is why he isnt playing.....

Not surprising. Can never sleep on the Spurs.

im glad the lakers didnt get the spurs in the first round

Roddy should start over Butler (who might not even be on the team next season if they package him with Dampier) The Kidd/Roddy backcourt has great chemistry together and Butler isn't even a natural SG anyway.

Roddy is still a raw defender but if they had given him all season to work on it, he wouldn't be worse than Terry, who is only getting playing time because of his offense anyway. Instead, they give him inconsistent minutes and never let him get comfortable on the court and learn. Plus, his wingspan and athleticism gives him a chance to still make defensive plays when he's beaten, compared to Terry. We're comparing his defense to Jason Terry and JJ Barea, come on...he can't do much worse.

Roddy starting over Caron...

Stop it.

He should play more, but starting?

Come on.

Roddy should be the first PG off the bench. Not Barea.

(You can say JET is a PG, but you can also say Dirk is a Center by that same decree).

I don't think it's outrageous at all. Start Roddy so he can bring some speed to the offense and set the tone. The biggest benefit may be that Kidd doesn't get worn out early on guarding the quick PGs. He can pace himself and that leaves him fresh on offense and later in the game. They'll all still get their minutes anyway...Roddy should get 25-30, Butler could still get 30, and Terry could get 20-25.

Since this team lives on the fast break, Roddy is probably the quickest player on the floor and can get the easiest transition buckets.

Plus he can give you unnecessary turnovers and shotty defense...DeShawn Stevenson is the one that needs to be getting minutes.
