I think there may be a cultural element to this.

A friend of mine who I lived with in college for a couple years is Mexican and he put salt on most of the fruit he ate. Said everyone in his family does.

Yea. When I get a watermelon, I immediately cut it off the rind.

When I put it in the container, I layer watermelon and then "seasoning." (And so on) (I mix cinnamon + powdered ginger in another container)

Salt is a flavour enhancer

That’s why there’s salt in candy, chocolate chip cookies etc.

Vietnamese people take it to another level. They eat fruit with shrimp salt

My wife grew up in Ohio where they have decent watermelon - but she always refused to eat it so we never got it - some childhood bad experience.

Last summer somehow she ate some and discovered it is delicious - but she always covers it in some spicy crap. Totally ruins it.
