Help us build a library with Room to Read & earn a special badge for your account!

Hey just direct us to the local organization you support as well and show us your contribution so we can follow your lead. A guy who can post his bank account (it's completely real bro, I believe you) can post a screen of his charitable donations too. But a man of your stature and income that dines at the finest of establishments can't share the wealth?

And we also have a billion charities here in America for kids in need, if you want to see your money or items go to good use take all that money you claim to have to go donate items in need directly so you know it's being put to good use

Let's hear an excuse for that. I bet you have never even done any charity work in your life or even stepped inside of a homeless shelter (in b4 dude claims he was once homeless)

I dont donate. Really never had the money like that until this year . But what I do do is volunteer and donate goods to kids. I had a back to school fair for kids that i sponsered at a restruant. i spent my own money on school bags, pencils, paper and etc. it was a success

I have and do volunteer often as well to directly help the poor and struggling united states citizens

Go funds website. if i see a kid need surgery that is here in the United States i donate..

We need to help our children here and focus on our next generation here. make sure they are fed well, clothes , school supplies and other goods to make sure they are successfull. Kids overseas will not contribute nothing to our society even when grown(America) 9 times out of 10. We need to focus on her generation here.

And to answer meth question those kids lives here are no more valuable then kids overseas but the kids here are MORE valuable to us (united States citizens) then those kids overseas who contribute nothing to our society. And I dont buy flashy stuff.  Never been a flashy person. Heck , I made over 200k this year and I still use coupons, I still shop at the dollar store, im a cheapskate...

But whatever like I say good job, if you want to helo kids overseas then that is your thing. im not knocking just trying to understand why

You made 200k and didn't donate $10 to this? I am still in college with tons of debt, yet I'm doing what I can. *insert kermit meme here*

honestly, who cares what he spends his money on? It's his. What I do think is disrespectful is denigrating the efforts of others just because you don't find the charity to be worth your money. It takes a very simple-minded person to come into a thread where people are exhibiting generosity and goodwill and pontificate about why the charity is beneath you.

you know you could help a kid overseas and still help kids here in america....heaven forbid we help those get educated in countries that don't have school systems like we do here.

We did it!

I'm pleased to report that Room to Read won an additional $5,000 thanks to last week's bonus challenge!  We needed 25 different contributors to make Room to Read eligible to win the $5,000 bonus prize - and we received over 100.

All of the contributions Room to Read received last week (including the $25 anonymous donation accidentally contributed to their in-house team instead of ours *cough* @Mark Antony  and the two single person teams) all came from NikeTalk members.  You made this possible.

This week's bonus challenge begins TODAY.  All of the Social Entrepreneurs Challenge participants have been randomly grouped into pairs.  (Room to Read has been paired up with Mothers 2 Mothers.)

The top 10 pairs will win a bonus $5,000 for each winning organization.  We'll need to do our very best to give them a chance.

There's also a DAILY bonus challenge.   Every organization that raises $100 or more in a day is entered for a chance to win and additional $1,000.  Each day we raise $100 or more together, that's another chance for a $1,000 bonus.

We've already raised over $3,000 together thus far through just 103 contributors.  That demonstrates your generosity, but it also demonstrates the opportunity available to us.  NikeTalk is a much larger community than 103 people.  Each contributor has more than one person in his or her own personal network.

To progress, we'll need to reach out and bring more people in.

If you have friends or family members who aren't NikeTalk members, their contributions can still count towards your badges and upgrades.  Just have them include your account name in the donation comment.

Remember, the Social Entrepreneurs Challenge ENDS December 5th!

So we should donate more? or just get more people to donate?

What's that light-blue NT badge with the white star?
Nevermind ~ found it ~ for Somalia a few years ago.

Everyone who's contributed thus far has been very generous.  I want to make sure that you feel appreciated for your contributions, and know that we respect your sacrifice.  Turning around and asking for more immediately would undermine that to a degree.

Listen, given the need Room to Read seeks to address, they could ALWAYS benefit from and do great things with additional funding.  There's no denying that.  However, one of the things I hope that fundraisers like these demonstrates is that, when combined, our contributions can achieve real, meaningful good in the world.

You know your situation better than anyone.  You know your finances better than anyone.  In relative terms, the struggling parent who gives $30 has sacrificed far more than the affluent businessperson who gives $300.

It's not my place to tell those who've already contributed to give more.

What I can say is that, with a total of 103 supporters thus far, there is plenty of room for growth by expanding our network of contributors.

This week's bonus challenge is an ambitious one, in that it requires Room to Read and its partner organization to rank among the top 10 combined earners.  I can appreciate if that seems intimidating.

However, we can qualify for the daily challenge by raising $100 per day.  If we did that every day through the end of the competition, we'd raise an additional $1,600 and we'd give Room to Read 16 chances to win an extra $1,000.

"Autopilot" won't get that done.  The front page featuring and announcement have taken us about as far as they can now.  It's up to us to make the extra push needed to raise that $100 each day if we want to maximize our odds at qualifying for bonus funding.

That's 10 new $10 donations, 4 new $25 donations, or ONE new $100 donation a day.
When's the deadline for donations?
December 5th.

I don't have a problem with donating, actually I was prepared to donated

I dont donate.

I noticed that, too.

This thread isn't - and shouldn't - be about those who are uninterested in supporting Room to Read.  There are thousands upon thousands of threads available throughout our forums for those who don't wish to participate in our current group fundraising drive - and only one for those who do.

This should be a positive reflection of our shared values in action.

@Methodical Management  was about to donate but the site doesn't accept Paypal..Any way around this? (I don't have a credit card, I'm in highschool.)
A prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift card would probably work.  These can be purchased in cash from many retailers and work just like a Visa/MC debit card:  http://usa.visa.com/personal/personal-cards/gift-cards/index.jsp

Like Meth said, you can get a prepaid card at pretty much any big box "pharmacy" like CVS, Duane Reade, Rite Aid etc.

That's where I get them when I need. They usually have some where you can pay cash and they'll put any dollar amount up to $500 on it.

Donated. I used my NT name.
Much appreciated.

We just need another $60 today in order for Room to Read to qualify for the $1,000 daily bonus.

Remember, too, that we need another $500 to ensure that Room to Read is eligible for the Skoll contribution match.  We still have two weeks left, but we'll need to pick the pace back up a bit to get there.

Link me to the donation page. I got $60 on it.

No props needed man. It's for a good cause. Rather help out then waste the money on something else.
