Yea, I was wondering why he mentioned a "whale" up above.

Both make sense either way

The original saying is from the 70's.

My Dad said it (and many other things) when I was a kid.

Jay-Z didnt make that line up. He might have switched it for the rhyme scheme but OG was "Whale".

Whenever we (me or my siblings) tried to finesse my Dad he would say it.

"You trying to sell a shell to a snail huh?"

"You trying to sell water to a whale huh?"

"Aint nothing slick to a can of oil Son."

My Dad spoke like that. Man of few words but when he did speak, you got it even if you didnt.
