Information Technology (IT)

Got the Service Desk Engineer gig. Pays close to 20k more than what I'm making now.

Job hunting was interesting this time around. Got a lot of help desk/technical support offers but no Jr. Sys admin luck.

Gonna take my Network+, and Sec+, and start applying again in 6months -1 year. Shooting for 70k-75k.

great to hear mane!!!

got an interview with faaang this week and don't know how to feel

im in a good gig right now and am not going to lick no boots for faaang but it seems like most people are desperate for that
plus they want me to relocate

i think i'll just give it my best go and see how it goes, going to treat them like all other companies i interview with

its a security gig but they also want me to be coding, i never relle did coding tho

A lot of people want that name on their resume. It can help a lot from what I hear.

Good luck on the interview. How did you prepare for it?

I watched some videos on youtube from recruiters but its alot of YT weirdos that are making me think too much about if im doing things right or not

I am approaching it from this angle:
i'll just be honest about what i know and how i do things and just display my security knowledge and how in my career i can learn anything and adjust/adapt to environments
and just because they are a big name company things won't be different and i kinda wanna tell them that i am not gunna act different cuz yall faang

if they don't want me for that then its not a good fit

I had to look up what FANG was...

It mainly returned stocks. Is the interview with one of the firms whose stocks are associated with it?
my bad faang is
facebook
apple
amazon
netflix
google

they are supposed to be the "elite" tech companies which some weirdos have determined.

to me they are not elite as their are some badask companies who are not on that list but also pay well

I got it. But...you weren't specific. But I get the previous post about having the name on your resume.

They are huge tech companies. I was at a workout class yesterday and saw a lady with a Cisco water container. Thought it was cool.

Need to start applying for jobs lol so I can know the feels. Sitting through an Azure class right now.

Had a recruiter reach out to me regarding a senior sys admin role that’s 95% remote. Going off the job description, I check all the boxes for what they want but I know I wouldn’t classify myself as a sys admin let alone senior level. I’m going to go through and see if I can get it while also working my current gig since I’m already at home not doing much.

I recently updated my indeed profile to list hade a TS/SCI (don’t know why I waited 2 years to do it), recruiters have been coming out left and right. I’m not prepared for them to blow my phone up once I get my sec +

What certs do you have now? I’m not planning on starting to look for jobs until like September so I was gonna try to do my A+ Net+ and SEC+ before I get my first job

Congrats too :nthat:

I don't have any certs yet. I've only passed the first part of the A+. I'm gonna take the second part soon and then go snag the Net+. I'm already done studying for the Net+. Just tightening up my notes.

for those with help desk experience, what are the pro/cons? I have a contract offer on the table but hesitant to accept due to the reputation of working that kind of role

You should do them in that order.

A+ gives you a systems foundation (system as in PC, tablet, mobile phone, printer, IOT). Network+ gives you the transport aka streets, roads and highways those systems take to communicate with another system. And finally Sec+gives you a foundation on how to secure the systems and transport.

Just understand it’s a basic foundation. You want intermediate or expert it requires vendor specific stuff or alternatives like Offensive Security, SANs, etc.

just got off the phone with the recruiter they didn't like ya boy and i was not surprised cuz i didn't gel with them either

she asked me for feedback and I old em they need to revamp their whole interview process and i won’t be interested in another position until they do so lol. she was very acceptive of the feedback and was taking notes and i told her as a security professional i don’t wanna program i wanna focus on security so if u ask me to code during an interview im not finna and yeah i don’t think anything will change but did my due diligence
Let them know that the interview structure is very weird and how do they expect to ask me a general question then keep poking for me to go in deeper on the respons an di told her i stopped the interviewer and told him to be more direct
she said their review was that I lacked domain knowledge and i was like i’m 5 years in and got. masters so i’m not sure how they came to that conclusion
it was with google by the way, i feel like their interview process is for attracting weirdos of the fairer skin

This is a fact. Did an interview with them some years ago and that sums up the process. A few friends worked there and bounced cause they got some racist practices there as well in terms of promotions and preferential treatment.

Bro.. that's literally how my interview went with Google for a freaking help desk job like 5 years ago.

The tech question they had for me was:

"There's a building where an old company used to work at. The old company has left and and a new company moved into the building.

Once the new company set up all their computers, some users can't connect to the internet while others can.

What is causing the issue?"

The answer was "Not enough IP addresses because some were already assigned to computers from the old company"

At the time I had no network knowledge but looking back now it was such a terrible question.

Why would a new company moving into a building not have their own DHCP servers and network equipment??

That's an extremely vague question. One that lends you to ask further questions. Sounds like a question from a non technical interviewer.

Off the top of my head, I can think of like three ways to answer that question as is.
