For the cloud engineers/architect

What made yall choose between aws and Azure?

I also want a backup plan in case UC dies down/explore my opportunity.

Someone on reddit said there are far more job opportunities for Azure than aws... is that facts or nah?

I chose to learn aws first because that’s that environment my previous project used. I’m learning azure fundamentals at the moment since my new project might incorporate it for some cloud migrations

I am by no means a Cloud engineer or architect. In Defense spaces, I’d say the USGOV favors Azure due to Entra ID, M365, Intune, and the IaaS and PaaS. Plus vendors targeting the gov become partners. I’ve been to three places that seem to be mainly Azure. Though I do know AWS does have a Federal presence and could be more prevalent in other Federal sectors.

Commercially, AWS seems to be the leader with 30% with Microsoft at 20%. It just depends on what sector you’re going to work in. Can’t hurt to learn both and supplant it with terraform/automation.

The consulting firm I work for is a Microsoft shop so didn’t have a choice it was always Azure. We’re in core banking which leans heavily towards Microsoft.

Definitely not facts r.e. AWS vs Azure though.

AWS is the clear leader in market share but Azure is narrowing the gap, growing marginally faster. Some people interpret that as more opportunities for employment.

Total number of jobs between the two isn’t terribly important though. Much more useful to look at job opportunities by region and sector. AWS dominates the Bay Area and Silicon Valley while Azure is the leader in many parts of Europe. It can be more practical to compare locally if you want to choose based on available job opportunities.

At the end of the day, they have similar capabilities besides the Entra/M365 stuff. VPC = Vnet. Classic Active Directory is the same. Blob Storage = S3. They both have IaaS, PaaS. Big Data Lakes. Database Service. Serverless Azure Functions = Lambda.

Best thing is to just dive in. They both offer free tier subscriptions for a period time.

in my org im the admin for MS Teams, Slack, and WebEx.

Yes, my company uses all 3.

Curious what you guys use.

WebEx, imo, is the best all around.

Sadly MS Teams won since its buried with O365 so companies might as well use it. MS Teams also integrates well with everything else microsoft.

Slack is great for collaboration/IM but its just a glorified IM messenger. And if your company is a Microsoft shop, it makes no sense to use Slack instead of MS Teams. Slack lacks in the video meeting department.

They pay for their MS licenses so we use Teams whether or not it works or has the capability. :lol

Based on being in the DMV and around Gov. It’s all Azure, but as mentioned earlier commercially it’s AWS. So just gotta pick your poison.

All my other companies used Teams. Easy to support.

Currently use Gsuite now that I'm at a much smaller company.

For the prior military folks, what's a realistic salary for someone with a Signal Corps background who has Sec+, Net+, SecX (formerly know as CASP) and CCNA? I'll be a CW2(P), maybe CW3, when I retire in 2029-30. I might even pursue CCNP before I final out. I'm gonna keep it real though, I ain't tryna work as much or be as stressed when I retire . I'm not even looking to break the bank, I just want to add to my retirement, disability and make enough to take trips with the wife so she can stop mentioning all these certifications that are being wasted. I low key really just want to work at GameStop or be a Walmart door greeter

RTO back for MS
I got a homie that’s been working remote in NC. Works out of Reston. Hope he can finesse it.

Easy six figures depending on market and experience. Now where you land above that depends on your experience or cough cough signal corps relationships.

It’s always funny because people around me always talking about making 6 figures at all these different companies and I’m like sure, that would be dope. However, companies aren’t just throwing 6 figures at everyone for nothing. I always ask what‘a required for that type of salary. I’ve been in the Army since I was 19 so I’m not familiar with the civilian sector but that just seems like they’re going to want a lot. I don’t really want to be in charge anymore, I don’t want to be on call, I don’t want to “do more with less”. I just want to come in and do my piece of the pie and dip when it’s time to go home. Don’t call my *** after hours :lol

When I threw out numbers it’s being military or federal adjacent.

You don’t have to be in charge or you can by going GS or chase contract management. All depends on what, where, and how you want to do things.

Things semi solidify once you get to TRS/TAMPs. You have options with skills bridge and corporate fellowship. And that CWO network is great too. I never used it…but it’s always out there. I know a bunch of cats who benefited from it.

Yeah, easy six figures. DOE, location and on what level clearance you have. You can def get that here in California

government boutta shut down...

I remember when it shut down years ago (pre covid) but I STILL had to drive to the office (NIH) so they could tell me to go back home in person...

somehow its protocol that they have to tell me in-person that the government shutdown... I was like bruh... such a waste of gas.

I was really not a fan of Webex. Had to use it as a communication method with a third-party vendor. I'm not big on MS Team neither but it does the job (though it can be slow with come with some bloating features).

I hear Teams isn’t great on Windows?

Ironically I find it to be pretty on MacOS. Definitely prefer it to Slack.

Thinking about trying WGU again

My schedule was too hectic before. Anybody here try them out before?
