I was reading this MSN article earlier and it said college grads didn't get jobs because they didn't go to the business in person. But very few placesof business let you apply in person. They tell you to go home and apply online. So maybe lack of human interaction prevents getting a job? But forcing peopleto apply online doesn't help so there's no way around that.

Another thing, you get an engineering degree and you're now in a rat race with the rest of the asians (no offense) that have that degree. Then they startasking for Masters. You now gotta go back to school and spend even more money. Then you STILL can't get a job.

I just feel that college is overrated, but learning isn't. More and more people are pushed into college after high school, tuition fee's are rising, employers are looking for more than just a Bachelor's degree and then at the end of the day, it's just a paper. So now it seems you have to have somesort of talent now because smarts can't do *+%+. And it's weird because most wealthy people either said +*@$ school or they got wealthy off ofsomething completely outside of their major.

So what do ya'll think of all this? I'm about to drop out and work on my jump shot. Or start slinging crack rocks. </sarcasm>

honestly nowadays it depends on who you know....

networking + degree = [Weezy] Mulah Babay [Weezy]

I read that same article. They actually said that the best way to get a job was through networking because 28% of managers hire people who are referred byemployees. Thats how I got my internship. Through networking and referrals.

College for me is just a back up plan just incase the plans I have formulated fall through. Although I could of done the no school route in my field andalready been making 40k+ a year, getting a degree would allow me to make the upwards of 60k+.

Baisically a degree can open doors but its not needed. Getting a degree also does not promise you anything. Either way you have to be focused, put in work, andtake risks. If you get lucky, by the time your in your late 20's you should be making bread.

my thoughts exactly

If you have contacts, and hopefully some experience, a degree is beneficial.

A degree on its own is worthless. I have plenty of friends who thought their degrees would instantly result in recruiters calling, their resumes being read, etc.

I think that college overall is valuable, just for the sake of learning to be self-sufficient and independent, as well as developing relevant skill-sets.

Yes, it's overrated. Plain and simple. I mean, the experience and meetin' new people and partyin' and all that stuff is fun, but the education youget there is overrated.

im saying...i sat through a management class freshmen year to learn what i already know about Line vs. staff

Networking gets you jobs (biggest thing to remember in a successful life...biggest)

College expands your horizons to get those jobs.

College life gets you laid..........go to college son...

Just think about being in that rat race w/o a degree. There are alot of people in line ahead of you with degrees.

Yup.

College isn't overrated, just the degree is.

OP kinda reaching with thatAsian comment, but i thought it was funny.

I think its overrated when college students depend solely on the degree.
If they put in a part time job, or interning for the 4+ years they are in school for their major, you are getting the experience and a degree at the same time.
Also networking plays a big role when it comes to getting jobs.

I mean, majority of the comp sci/comp engineering majors are asians, tamils, indians, etc. that are holding down them Silicon Valley jobs, though.

Ask a sneakerboard of people who are not in college, or are in college for the wrong reasons and these are the responses you get. Of course college isn'toverrated. Continue thinking it is though more openings for me and my family.

in a word... yes. college is moreso a business than anything else. most colleges expand on the same lies we are taught in high school.

basically...people who think like this make life SO much easier for me.

i think OP is a minority as well... this sounds messed up, but the fact that most black males think like you do is the reason why i, as a black male whoactually has his head on straight, can BS around and get like 3.0 GPA and still walk into a great job when i graduate.

Exactly. People can say it's who you know, but the bottom line is that most jobs require applicants to have a college degree. Education isnever a bad investment to make.

College FTW...best years of my life...plus I already had a job lined up before my last year. If I could go do it again, I would.
