basically...people who think like this make life SO much easier for me.

i think OP is a minority as well... this sounds messed up, but the fact that most black males think like you do is the reason why i, as a black male who actually has his head on straight, can BS around and get like 3.0 GPA and still walk into a great job when i graduate.

QFT

If you are a black male a degree is a necessity, and that is the truth. Companies are looking for bright black kids to hire, the problem is that therearen't any because so many think college is "overrated".....I like the thread by OP but those of you that are saying it is overrated better notbe black, and as far as the education goes, it is what you make it. 70 percent of what I have learned has been outside of the classroom.

At an Ivy school, maybe. But it's an investment, the Benz isn't. There are plenty of reputable accredited universities that you canattend all 4 years and still not be in debt enough to get yourself an E Class.

I would rather give up a fleet of E's to attend a campus where billionaires are made.

this is by far the dumbest post in this thread...what does attending a Community college have to do with anything?...

I would say its 50/50. Its a waste in times like this but after these dark periods it can be the greatest thing.

why do you guys continue to entertain this crumb?

College is overrated if you aren't 100% sure about what you wanna do.

Going to college right after high school is dumb overrated.

College isn't overrated...research the field you want to go into, as long as you know what to expect when leaving college, you shouldn't have muchproblems. Not all fields pay the same (duh, I know)....you would be surprised how many people lack the common sense to realize this/ that a bachelorsdoesn't guarantee a career.

I don't think there is a simple answer to this question. College may be overrated for some, but not for others. I, for one, loved college and wouldn'tbe where I am today without having gotten a college degree. However, I think there are some people that are not cut out for college and would be better servedby trying to pick up and excel at a particular trade. That is by no means a criticism. I have the utmost respect for skilled tradesmen like carpenters, electricians, landscapers, etc. If you're good, you can also make a pretty good living doing these kinds of things.

So, I would pretty much recommend college as a goal for most people. However, if you are someone who knows that class-room based learning is not for you, Ithink you may be better served by doing something else, rather than forcing yourself to get a college degree.

College is not overrated. It's the majority of the students who don't even attempt to get anything valuable from it that are overrated. The issue isnot with the institution of college itself, because they provide most if not all of the tools necessary to start your career. The issue is in the fact that youcan get by in a lot of these Universities without much effort. Just like anything in life, you get about as much as you put into it. College is a great placeto build the foundations for not only your career, but your network as well. Just think of how many people college can add to your social network (everyonemakes friends in college), then think about how much it can do the same for your professional network.

In a sense yes I agree, but not only is it overrated its overpriced, bloated, inefficient and needs to be drastically revamped.

I def agreewith folks sayin its who you know, I don't care what your major is. Its real out here.

College isn't overrated yet, I say yet as in opprotunities still exist within the experience. Students network in college, learn, and get a feel of theirfuture carrers.

Yes and no. Whatever path you take, it's whatever you make of it and how much effort and sweat you put in.

im saying...i sat through a management class freshmen year to learn what i already know about Line vs. staff
and thats why the first year is designed to weed out people with that mentality. if you dont want to go to college cool, but to say college isoverrated is ridiculous. you learn so many things in college that help in life its redic. i mean really are we suppose to train our doctors and lawyers andengineers out of high school with no experience in doing for self. the simple act of being left to your own devices in college to get things done is a seriouscharacter builder.
