IT Jobs

I'm in school right now for Information Security Systems. Do any of yall have experience in this field ? What certs are important to get ? What careers to look into etc. I heard networking was a good career field, but I just don't get subnetting.

Where do you live?

Are you going to a vocational school, getting a 2 year or 4 year degree ?

Any IT security job your going to need a Security+ and later on a CISSP certification.

You should also look into doing security certs for Cisco on top of getting a CCNA or a security cert in Microsoft on the MCITP cert career path.

Job wise man it's real tough right now in the IT industry.

Well I went to a university for a year majoring in business and failed out due to laziness/distractions. Moved back home, my step dad works as a programmer, said it was a good field, my community college has a good IT program, and now i'm here.

Information Security is wide ranging. 

If you really into security I suggest you enroll in the military because many IT security jobs require security clearance to even apply. I'm not kidding either. Wish I had just 2 years after school. 

Other option is you can be an auditor but that is just writing a bunch of reports and assessments.

I`ll tell you now, if this isnt something you want to do you wont survive. Best of luck but never do something off the strength of someone saying its a good field, that should be something to make you look into something, but dont commit if its not something you feel your going to be 100% in.

Oh man Cali and especially the Norcal & the bay area are super competitive for IT jobs.It always has been that way.

Siliicon valley & Cupertino CA which is about 30 or 45 minutes south of the bay and SF you might have better luck finding a job out there.

Also I don't know but it sounds like you took a vacation out to Norcal & the bay and fell in love with the city.But do some research and it's seriously just crazy trying to live out there when everything from housing, food, lifestyle, gas is all OVERPRICED.Especially comparing it to where your coming from.

Honestly though you being fresh out of school and not having any experience is going to be your biggest challenge when applying & looking for work.

If I were in your situation I'd stay in the east coast and look for work in your state or in VA, DC, and and Maybe NYC & Boston.

VA & DC all the big DOD private contractors like Northrup Grumman, SAIC, Lockheed are all out there looking to hire for IT jobs.

Another option if your up to it and can sacrifice 2 or 4 years is talk to a Navy or Air Force recruiter.

Yeahh, im not joining the military, but thanks for the suggestion.

I really enjoy computers, and I like the security aspect, I just don't like the networking part. There is really no career that I can realistically obtain that I 100% want, but I gotta eat.

I was being serious. The guy posted his pay stubs and I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he's telling the truth about his schemes. I'm not brazen enough to follow his advice but hey hes proved that it can work

I was talking about Oakland, i thought is was cheaper there, how is the cost of living in silicon valley ? And yeah I have been out there a few times and loved it.  And nah man I do not want to join the military.

I was also serious about the indictment. You CAN GET LOCKED UP for lying on your resume, especially to that extent.

I would advise those to follow slades advice if you don't really have plans to be in the technical field.

That way, if you get caught and blackballed, you aineem trippin.

I have my degree in IT from a HBCU... graduated with plenty of people like you that have no real interest in the field... just heard it was good....

Certs are nice, degrees are nice, real experience gets you jobs. You need to find out what you really want to do.

I know people without degrees and certs making more money than me in IT. They had a passion for the field and willing to learn.

Find a way to get some experience NOW while you are in school. When you graduate, that only makes a slight difference.

I'm in MIS right now, graduating soon and my concentration is Security.

Going to start getting certs in the spring. Going for Network+ and Security+ I also have an IT assistant job now and I hate it. It's definitely not something I would want to do for a living,
Cybersecurity is more along the lines what I want to do, then hopefully after I get a MBA move into more managerial position and what not.
