Well I think Jay is better...his strengths are representing pretty damn well, what in my opinion is the guy that most people are or want to be i.e. Coming up, working hard & doing what you go to do to get to success and then situating yourself there permanently.
All the while being able to talk about and enjoy the perks of your success. He also still is grounded and never forgets where he comes from no matter how much success he achieves...All of that is articulated in his music and the natural maturing and progression of his music is on track with an avg person life imo..
I like NaS cause his music speaks to what alot more black males or people in general should become, thinking wise. Though he can be extremely contradictorily at times, when he is on his substance tip its done pretty well.

first, i don't get how people can knock jay-z's business mind. he's accumulated more wealth post-dame, than with dame. in the meantime, dame hasn't been able to recover from losing jay-z partnership. ill give dame props for his entrepreneur mind. he thinks outside the box and values ownership. from starting roc-a-fella/rocawear to his current dd172 venture, these are perfect examples. but business wise, everything from making good investments to foreseeing changes to harboring profitable relationships to marketing/branding/etc., jay-z got dame.
now back to the topic at hand, nas vs. jayz, such a tough argument. you can come at the question from so many aspects. who is a more talented rapper, ability wise? who has more worthwhile rhymes? who has been the most consistent throughout their career? who had a bigger impact?
im just going to run down my opinion of both because i can't call it
jay-z has a more versatile rapping ability that enables him to make a wider range of songs, and they'll still be quality songs. jay blew up in the late 90's because he could rap on those swizz beats/timbaland beats and make em hits. nas couldn't and just sounded off by trying (see 'you owe me')
nas, not as versatile, but he's more consistent lyrically. given that, he needs a certain type of beat to really shine (salaam/l.e.s), and these beats don't appeal to the masses as much.
both can be crazy introspective when they want too. nas chooses to go there a lot more but jay-z can match him when he wants.
nas isn't as calculated as jay-z. this has helped jay remain more relevant for a longer period and thus have a bigger impact. from collaborations to features to production to songs to include on the albums, jay is just better at it. how can nas have a lost tapes album that is top 3 in his catalogue? i know, some of it is record labels, but some of it is nas' lacks an ability to understand what makes him great and what the public wants to hear from him.
who has released the better albums? to me its jay. obviosuly nas gets illmatic, but jay has the next two, maybe three. and i think you could argue nas has had better singles (one mic, got yourself a gun, theif's theme, made you look, just a moment > h-izzo, me & my girlfriend, show me what you got, change clothes). jay had to sacrifice album cuts to get sales, and still turned out better albums overall. i think it speaks to jay's overall rapping ability to be able to do that, and thats why i put him ahead of nas. plain and simple, the man makes better music.
