IMO, it's more like

Mass produce BOTH : release the less coveted pair first in small batches to ensure it sells out too along side the Lakers pair.

These Bones will sell out Saturday, and they would not have if they didn't do these 'shock' drops. It's brilliant marketing by Nike.

facts. most of these stores are doing raffles. some through apps.
no footsites unless you live in like three major cities.
so no real access besides snkrs for most of us and we know how snkrs is.
so basically stockx or bust.

that's terrible yet typical for nike.

Again, I think it's all about perception. Nike want's to give the perception of smaller hyped up drops without them actually being that limited. Because they don't make money off limited stuff, they make hype. They got plenty of that.
