Every time someone makes a choice in the path of life there is a fork, just as easily as one made the decision they did, they could have made another. Furthermore there could be an infinite amount of outcomes only difference in all these outcomes is the actual action taking place. Just like someone already posted, Multiverse. I believe that there are infinite versions of ourselves that can make infinite decisions that could take us on an infinite amount of paths of life in which each individual fulfills whatever their desires are. Although you might not get what you want in your universe or lifetime, an alternate version of yourself could have achieved what you dreamed in theirs. Also you wouldn't be the same exact person because even if you have the same exact genetic make up that only makes you half of what you are, the other half that makes you what you are is experience in life. It is a culmination of the decisions and actions you make and the decisions and actions of the beings in your surroundings. So that little difference can create a Butterfly Effect. "Something as small as the flutter of a butterfly's wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world"
I would also recommend the movie "A Sound of Thunder" OP. Completely different movie than Source Code but deals with cause and effect and alternate realities
