Interesting point by Eric Pincus who was spitballing on Yi's contract that is a partial guarantee. He speculated how Yi could be a solid trade chip despite having no trade value as a player himself.
His guaranteed status comes up after the trade deadline.
So from October through All Star Break, the Lakers can hold Yi as a $1.1 to about $4 mil player. Apparently has raises based on if he reaches certain dates on the team.
Then trade him to another team before the deadline as an $8.8mil player, which would allow him alone to fetch about a $12mil player.
The team that trades for Yi can then cut him, pay him only a fraction of what he is owed, then cut him and be off the hook of the final $4-5mil
