Springpractice may mostly be closed off to the public and a sign thatfootball season is still off over the horizon, but the pressconferences by the coaching staff contain more useful information thanthe weekly press conferences during the season when the great majorityof what is worth talking about and evaluating happens on the field onSaturday.

Greg Davis and Will Muschamp both spoke with the media on Monday and had some revealing things to say about the current state of the team.

http://
star-divide.v5547.jpg
Offense
• Michael Huey has moved from the right side to the left side to pair with Kyle Hix, who is currently playing left tackle.
 • Greg Smith is cross-training at H-back and Barrett Matthews isworking at tight end to increase flexibility and prepare for anyinjuries that may occur.
 • In 11 personnel, it looks like James Kirkendoll is the startingflanker, Malcolm Williams the split end, and John Chiles inside at slotreceiver, a change from last season when he mostly worked at flanker.
 • Davis says that the two running backs who have separated themselvesare Tre' Newton and Fozzy Whittaker because they give the offense themost flexibility -- Davis says both can pick up the blitz (probablymore questionable for Whittaker than Newton) and can also split out aswide receivers. Considering his penchant for wanting to bounceeverything outside and a desire at times to avoid hits, it's remarkablethat Whittaker has separated from most of the other running backs andit probably speaks to a greater desire to work between the tackles inwhat has become a downhill running scheme for the Longhorns.
 • Playing running backs with the ability to pick up the blitz andsplit out wide is important for the Longhorns as they seek to be trulymultiple offensively -- able to switch between using an H-back orfullback and then still be able to spread the field by flexing out therunning back or H-back/fullback without changing personnel.
 • There is no separation currently between Connor Wood and SherrodHarris. Davis mentioned Case McCoy in that mix as well, but it wasclear from watching the open practices that the youngest McCoy simplydoesn't have the arm strength and ability to throw the footballdownfield or any type of out pattern to the sidelines at depth. Thelack of separation probably says more about Harris than it does aboutWood being exceptionally mature for a kid who should still in highschool, although Wood does spin the football nicely and has a quickrelease, something that hasn't always been the case with him.
 • David says that Garrett Gilbert is still working on his "synergy"with the wide receivers, but apparently the criteria is theMcCoy/Shipley mindmeld, so the standard is high at Texas.
 • The offensive line is adopting a much more nasty attitude as theycontinue to work almost exclusively downhill -- music to these ears.
Defense
• Coach Boom mentioned Kenny Vaccaro, Tevin Mims, and Alex Okafor as players who have not played a lot yet in their careers but have stood out during spring practice so far.
 • The defense, particularly the defensive line, is working oncross-training at the moment, with Tevin Mims, Tyrell Higgins, KheestonRandall, and Sam Acho all mentioned as guys along the line who areworking at different positions. Acho is currently the starting threetech next to Randall as a zero/one tech, partly to challenge to youngerplayers like Calvin Howell and Derek Johnson to step up theirrespective games, but also because Muschamp flat-out wants to put thebest players on the field with an emphasis on speed and is willing tosacrifice some size to do so. Mims is likely working at defensive endin both the 4-3 and 3-4 alignments and probably at three tech as well, while Higgins works as a three tech and defensive end in the 3-4.Randall is seeing time as a three tech and nose tackle.
 • The depth chart looks pretty shaky at linebacker without EmmanuelAcho and Jared Norton, but Muschamp says that he is confident about thedepth at the position even without Jordan Hicks,Tevin Jackson, and Aaron Benson on campus yet, but is surely factoringthe younger Acho and Norton into his current confidence level. Boommentioned Tariq Allen and Patrick Nwkopara as two players who need toelevate their games this spring.

Kenbrell Thompkins, from Torrance (Calif.) El Camino JC, intends to come to UCLA, according to good sources.
The 6-2.5, 180-pounder, who has true 4.4 speed, is considered the #1 JC wide receiver in the nation for 2010.

He has told UCLA that he wants to be a Bruin, and the process is in the works to have him at school in time for spring practice, which starts next Thursday, April 1st. He has yet to pass UCLA admissions, and the process has been slowed since UCLA is on its quarter break this week.

It's also uncertain if Thompkins has the academic profile to get into UCLA.

Thompkins focused on UCLA for a specific reason. He had signed a National Letter of Intent to Tennesee back in November, to then-Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin. But when Kiffin announced not too long after that he was leaving Tennessee for USC, Thompkins opened up his recruitment. Thompkins recently received his release from Tennessee and then shifted his focus to Pac-10 and Big 12 programs, and contacted UCLA. Reportedly, Thompkins is motivated to play against Kiffin.

At the time when he opened up his recruitment, Thompkins adamantly said, "I'm not looking at USC. I'm not going to go down that road again with (the staff). I've already been burned once, I don't want to get burned again."

Originally from Miami (Fla.) Northwestern, where he said he got into "some trouble," Thompkins came to California to get away from bad influences back in Miami.

After high school he had pretty much given up on football until his little brother showed him the way. In an interview with Scout.com, Thompkins said: "My younger brother (Kendal Thompkins) got a scholarship to Miami and I was like, 'Hey, I gotta do this,' so I wanted to get away from all the bad influences and surround myself with good and positive people, so that's why I headed out to Elco."

As a Juco freshman in 2008, Thompkins, posted 57 catches for 1,032 yards and six touchdowns for the Warriors. In the fall of 2009, he was named a Preseason First Team JC All-American, and he did nothing to dispel that honor when he hauled in 69 receptions for 1,020 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore.

I doubt anyone else cares but me, but here is some TCU information. The Frogs started spring practice today, spring game is on April 10th
TCU Football To Begin Spring Practice
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BwMQiTTD5...Ba4/sPtupX8fITg/s1600-h/TCU+MWC+Champions.jpg
The TCU football team, with 16 of 22 starters returning from last season's 12-1 squad, returns to the field Tuesday at 4 p.m. for the start of spring practice.

Per NCAA rules, the Horned Frogs will have 15 practices. The Spring Game is April 10. TCU will have three practices after the Spring Game as spring drills will conclude April 15.

The Horned Frogs welcome back 14 All-Mountain West Conference selections from last season, including three All-Americans in quarterback Andy Dalton, return specialist Jeremy Kerley and center Jake Kirkpatrick.

Nine starters return from a 2009 offensive unit that ranked fifth in the country in scoring (38.3 points per game) and rushing (239.5 yards per game) while placing seventh in total offense (456.7 yards per game). The Horned Frogs set single-season school records for points scored (498), first downs (311) and total offense (5,937 yards).

TCU returns 69.7 percent of its rushing yards from a year ago as well as 86.6 percent of its receptions.

TCU has posted the nation's top-ranked defense each of the last two seasons and four times since 2000. Since the NCAA began tracking statistics in 1937, TCU is tied with Alabama and Auburn for the most No. 1 rankings in total defense at four. All four of the Horned Frogs top marks (2000, 2002, 2008, 2009) are under Gary Patterson.

Last year's No. 1 ranking came despite losing seven starters to graduation, including three to the NFL, off the nation's top unit in 2008. The Horned Frogs have seven defensive starters returning this season.

TCU closed last year sixth in the Associated Press and USA Today polls for its third top-10 ranking in the last five seasons.

Outside of Oregon State, Oklahoma, and few others, I dont see anyone else stacking up their non-conference schedule

Texas has UCLA, Wyoming, Rice, and Florida Atlantic

Kansas has North Dakota State, New Mexico State, Southern Miss, and Georgia Tech

Alabama has San Jose State, Penn State, at Duke, Georgia State

Tennessee has UT-Martin, Oregon, UAB, at Memphis

I understand our out of conference isnt tremendous. I still hate that we scheduled Tennessee Tech, but Oregon State is a solid team, Baylor should be a little better, and SMU has been playing better also. I just dont think many fans have room to talk noise about out of conference scheduling.

Nobody schedules tough out of conference games, unless they have too.

The risk is not worth the rewards, when you can schedule all directional schools OOC and still get to the NC.

Yeah, but TCU should play a tough non-conference schedule to make up for the crappy conference schedule.

Not necessarily. Big OOC games = more exposure. Better for recruiting, better for the school, and it brings in more revenue. Every school isn't going to be in competition for a NC every year and teams need to get away from the UF mentality. It's bad for CFB.

**EDIT** Let me quote this post, so nobody will go off on a rant and take my comments out of context.

Im not going to sit here and argue back and forth, because neither side is going to change their opinion and its a waste of time, but its not like Florida State's conference schedule is filled with world beaters. Wake Forrest, NC State, Virgina, Maryland...Wow! Yes, you have tough games against Miami, Clemson, etc... but your scheduled isnt stacked by any means.

Trust me, I know the MWC has the likes of New Mexico and UNLV at the bottom of their conference, but dont act like your schedule is filled from top to bottom with top caliber opponents.

What are you talking about? FSU played Clemson, Miami, UNC, Florida, USF, G-Tech, BYU last year.

Next year we play Florida, Oklahoma, Miami, UNC, Clemson and BYU

Year after that we play Florida, Oklahoma, USF and WVU OOC.

How is that not a stacked schedule?

I wasn't even coming @ your nut +%+ Horned Frogs, I was speaking in general.

With the TV contracts and such, if you are a big school, they get exposure regardless. What's a better pitch to a recruit, "Hey, we just went 12-0 and won a NC for the 2nd year in a row!" or "Hey, we went 8-4 last year, played in the peach bowl, but at least our schedule is tough!" Believe me, I don't like the patsy schedules, but I understand it. They days of playing murderers row, esp OOC, or OVER unless there is some way to get rewarded for a loss to a good team that is = to the win over a patsy in the computers and the voters mind.

Second, I wasn't talking about last season. This is is a thread about spring football, and the upcoming season.

Next, as I continue my breakdown of my comments that you misunderstood..."I am toddzo" brought up TCU's conference schedule, which then I replied that in fact FSU's conference schedule isnt stacked. If you payed attention, Florida, OU, and BYU aren't in Florida States conference. Thus leaving them a couple hard conference opponents, and a couple hard out of conference opponents.

If you want to sit here and say that Wake Forrest, Virginia, NC State, etc...are high caliber teams then go right ahead, but you arent going to convince me of it.Yes, OU, Florida, and BYU are very good OOC teams to have on your schedule, but I had turned my attention to their conference games like I mentioned above.

Yes, he brought up your conference schedule AND your out of conference schedule, did he not? So why should I only focus on in conference opponents?  I don't need to argue that they are high caliber teams, because they aren't. Yet by and large, people believe (whether true or not) the bottom feeders of the conference are better than the bottom feeders of the MWC. Therefore some people argue that the top teams in the conference should have tougher OOC schedules. Do I agree? Meh, if you woulda asked me 2 years ago, I would. But now, not really. I know which teams are in the conference and which ones are not.

I can assure you man, I'm not mad about anything. Me calling your team the 'nut @%@' Horned Frogs doesn't mean I'm mad. At any point throughout the year I will call team XYZ the nut @%@ XYZ'ers. Kyle Parker (Clemson QB) Is currently batting .414, 9 hr and 21 RBI so far this season. Safe to say, he's not going to be lining up under center next year?

That was the point I was talking about earlier when I said I didnt want to argue about it. I know some people feel that way, but I dont agree. Im not going to change their mind and they arent going to change my mind so its pointless to sit here and argue about it. Outside of the SEC, I think the MWC can compete with the Big East, ACC, and Big 10 and on select years the Pac-10 and Big XII. That is all I am going to say about that.
