With 35 bowl games, teams with losing records could earn invitations
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A bowl game is supposed to be a reward for a good season. Now, with the glut of postseason contests, a team with a losing record might get an invitation.
"I think it stinks," former Nebraska player Aaron Taylor said Wednesday in a text message. The CBS college football analyst said the sport "is becoming perilously close to losing the purity and amateurism that separates it from it's pro counterpart."
Finding enough winning teams to fill bowl slots is a fairly recent concern. The number of bowl games has nearly doubled from the 18 held in 1996.
The NCAA recently licensed the Dallas Football Classic and the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium, pushing the number of bowls to 35. The International Bowl didn't apply for a license, so there will only be one more bowl than last season.
That still means 70 of 120 Football Bowl Subdivision teams will get to go bowling, even if one or two happen to be 5-7.
"I'm not one of those guys that's like, well, that's too many bowls," said Tony Barnhart, who covers college football for CBS Sports and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "But everything can have it's excess, and to me, I think that's kind of where we need to draw the line is having 5-7 teams playing in the bowl games."
NCAA closin in on their goal of having all ADs, presidents, and head coaches getting pats on the back. Every team gonna be gettin in the NCAA hoops tournament soon, every team gonna be playing in a bowl game soon. Every school going to reap the "recognition" and the salary increasesWhat a joke

As a Florida fan, I've been frustrated with Wondy Pierre-Louis for the better part of four years. He rarely contributed on the field beyond some stellar special teams work, figured heavily into the secondary's more flammable configurations, and got arrested for what seemed like an ugly domestic incident, but turned into two misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief.
But I'm happy that he told the Orlando Sentinel's Jeremy Fowler what he did about marijuana use by the Gators: it's going to spur some discussion about why society feels the way it does about weed.
Pierre-Louis estimates about 75 percent of the 2006 team smoked marijuana based on internal talk among players and teammates posting positive tests. Pierre-Louis refused to estimate the current percentage since he says Meyer has significantly reduced the drug use on the team.
“I know a lot of players who didn’t smoke because they wanted to stay on the team,

Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, N.C. just opened in 2007. That year was quarterback Marquise Williams' freshman year. The Mavericks went just 1-10 in their first season. They quickly turned things around in 2008 going 10-1, and last season the Mavericks went 11-2. Mallard Creek Head Coach Mike Palmieri credits Williams in helping get the program established.

"He's done it all," Palmieri said. "Since Marquise has been here he's been a three year starter and matured as a leader. He's meant a lot to our team, and I think his early playing experience has served him well as he continues to develop as a player."
It's worth noting the 2007 team was 10-0 before having to forfeit the 10 wins due to having used an ineligible player. If that doesn't happen, Williams' record as a starter is a gaudy 32-3 for a program that is brand new. Certainly, plenty of Division 1 schools took notice and are vying for Williams' services.
"Marquise has great football ability," said Palmieri. "He's athletically gifted, very strong-armed, and is very elusive. He plays the game fast and makes snap decisions which are nearly always the right call."
Marquise Williams passed for 2,150 yards and ran for 1,500 in '09. He had 26 passing touchdowns and 14 rushing on his way to being named I-Meck Conference Player of the Year.
"Everyday we have schools calling to inquire about him," said Palmieri. "Recently North Carolina, Wisconsin, and LSU have visited."
Williams has been on unofficial visits to Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and N.C. State. He's been offered by many other top programs such as LSU, Florida, Notre Dame, and Michigan.
"He's been a pleasure to coach," said Palmieri. "An athlete like that doesn't come around very often, and I'm looking forward to having him here another year. Through all the attention he's remained humble. He's a very coachable kid who wants to win."
Winning is something Mallard Creek has become accustomed to with Williams as their signal caller. Last year's team went 11-2 and made it to the 2nd round of the state playoffs. Their only to losses of the season came in their first and last game to Independence.
"Our goal every year is to win a state championship, and that's Marquise's goal," said Palmieri. "Every year we want to do better than the last. The expectations are high around here, and we have a bunch of Division 1 prospects returning with Marquise at the helm as a senior. We have a chance to be special."
Williams, 6-4, 220, will participate in an Elite 11 quarterback camp next week. He plans to play in the Carolina Shrine Bowl, an All-Star game with players from North and South Carolina, after the season. There is no time frame on a decision, but he recently named UNC, Virginia Tech and LSU his leaders.
"Academically, Marquise is a good student," Palmieri stated. "We've had no trouble out of him. He's been a leader here both on-and-off the field."
North Carolina schools are limited in spring practices. Mallard Creek practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but will not have a spring game.

Didn't realize that the Elite 11 camp was coming up so soon. I'm definitely interested to see how everyone performs.
