MODS - now that JRose5 is gone can we now know what really happened?

The back story on this isn't that interesting.  (Not that "message board politics" of any sort qualify as a subject of genuine interest.)
JRose5 was a moderator and, later, an admin on the site for a number of years.  He was one of those rare users who, in 2001 or so, came along and took a genuine interest in helping others out.  He'd be in the sneaker forums helping people find information.  He'd show new users the ropes.  He demonstrated the qualities we look for in a prospective staff member.  He was brought in at roughly the same time as Dirtylicious and holdenmichael.  (It was a good draft, all told.) 

As time went on, he demonstrated a short fuse and that had to be addressed at times.  We deal with an audience that skews somewhat young - late teens, early twenties.  A lot of them still have that high school mentality and, in their minds, the people who volunteer their time to run this place for their benefit = teachers = authority = the enemy.  It gets old fast and not everyone has the patience needed to handle that on a day to day basis.  Imagine volunteering at a soup kitchen the day after a loved one dies, then having a customer spit in your face because they resent being told that they can't cut in line.  That's sort of what it's like to moderate on a site like this.  Nobody cares what's going on in your life.  Nobody cares that you're doing this for their benefit and reap no material gain from the effort.  Often people want to take full advantage of what you have to offer - but they don't want to listen to you, respect you, or respect anybody else.  They feel entitled.  There's no test you can give to see how someone will handle themselves in a situation like that.  Sometimes people who handle themselves with grace and dignity 99.99% of the time will snap.  Sometimes people who are generally a bit distant and surly will maintain that same even keel even during times of crisis.  It's not a matter of choosing whether you'd rather deal with the occasional meltdown or constant (though subtle) unpleasantness - because you don't really know what you're getting until after the fact.  

What we KNEW about JRose is that he was committed to helping the community and he did so for years. 

We heard the talk about JRose posting on hate boards filled with angry teens swapping slurs, insults, and pornography, but there were two issues there:  1) little message boards are often filled with impostors, because all people have to do is get there first.  2) It wasn't spilling over into NikeTalk.  How do you kick out a contributing volunteer for something they're ALLEGED to do in their spare time on the basis of hearsay?  Who would you trust in that situation, the person who voluntarily sacrifices for the community's benefit day in and day out, or a handful of kids who've been banned for posting racist stuff and insults on NikeTalk and are now accusing JRose of doing the same thing OUTSIDE of it?

When it did supposedly spill over into NT, it always supposedly occurred in PM and, as you know, under the current system for privacy purposes we don't go through other users's messages.  Screen shots are easy to doctor.  The complaints almost always came from people who repeatedly violated the rules and had trouble demonstrating respect for others, which made them poor witnesses.  What's worse, some of those who complained the loudest were the least mature - so when you asked them for proof (by allowing you to log in and view the message for yourself) they'd act like clowns and refuse.  That left us with no way to verify it.  

Eventually, I was able to verify that at least one such message was sent by JRose5.  He was responding to similarly racist and offensive messages sent to him, but from our perspective that's not an acceptable excuse.  We tell our members that "he started it" isn't a valid defense and staff members are expected to represent the community.

For his part, he claimed that the account was compromised.  It's true that there were some suspicious actions associated with his account (reinstating previously banned troublemakers), but nothing on the scale we'd associate with a real security breach.  

At the VERY least, I thought JRose5 should have apologized for the damaged caused.  If someone does hypothetically break into your account and sends racist messages, you're harmed by that as much as anyone else (if not more, since it harms your reputation), but the burden also rests, in part, on your shoulders since account security is your responsibility.  If an administrator's account is compromised, we all suffer the consequences.  JRose didn't really see it that way.   He was probably a little hurt that we didn't place absolute trust in his word.

Unfortunately, as much as you'd like to trust people - especially those who go out of their way to help you - we can't always afford to do so.  Hindsight is 20/20.  I remember an incident in 2003 where JRose made what I considered a racially inflammatory comment (something that involved the use of "ghetto" as a pejorative, I think) - days after I'd personally gone to the trouble of driving an hour out of my way to pick up a pair of Lebron "first games" for him out of appreciation for the work he'd done for the community.  In response, I posted - publicly - that I was personally offended and that he was making me regret that action.  After a handful of such incidents, I had reason for doubt and it is COMPLETELY unacceptable for ANY member of our staff to do anything even remotely resembling what JRose5 was accused of.  I couldn't afford to believe that it was a hacking issue.  We needed to be certain that it wouldn't happen again.

As a result, I pulled his staff access.  

He's still a registered member, but he doesn't actively use the site.  We have usage records and based on that he doesn't have any active aliases.  Based on that, the boogieman "he's still here" claims are unfounded. 

It's over and we've long since moved on.  I hope he has as well.

JRose never denied his participation on the other site.
Plus, he banned me a month or so before that mess for posting his crazy PMs towards another banned NTer.

I'm pretty sure I accepted his membership request for our other other site, too. 
 
JRose had his moments. his sports beef with VABigPoppa was always comedy
