Avoid Toshibas and Dells. I had a Toshiba and it was the worst electronic device I've ever encountered in my life. Dell is awful too. My first hard-drive for my Dell failed while I was still under warranty and they gave me a refurbished one that broke in a couple of months, which of course was right after the warranty ended. So I'm on my third hard-drive right now that I had to pay for myself and had to install without any tech support because they wanted $70 just for me to talk to somebody about how to do it.
I've had crappy experiences with HP printers, but have never tried their lap tops. While I've heard good things about their lap tops, I'm fine prejudging the company based on their other products. My next lap top will definitely be a mac despite me being a lifetime PC user. I'm just fed up.
While we're on the topic, does anyone have a list of pros and cons for the MacBook Air?

If you want a macbook pro check on CL you might find some pretty good deals on there sometimes you'll find some new ones for like 950-1100 with full warranties. I bought a macbook pro 13' for 800 a few weeks ago. It was 6 months old and still has 6 months on the warranty and I can upgrade to 3years of applecare for around 180 with the student discount. It takes a little getting used to but I'm liking it a lot since I'm using it for basically what you are going to use your's for.

I usually stick with HP at all times. Try looking for one as well with either a i3, i5, or i7 processor.

Asus' new laptops come with similar trackpads.
I would go with Asus or Lenovo. Unbelievably reliable and have quality manufacturing.
*If you go with Lenovo though, get a Thinkpad.
