NEW YORK METS 2010 SEASON POST: Collins named New Manager

this is a gap year. while i think we will defintely be competitive, especially if we trade for a pitcher during the season, i think with martinez, davis, Meija and thole coming up in 2011 were gonna be young and very talented.

Plus you should check out the FA list for 2011.

Should have traded Reyes a while ago. Dude is only due to breakdown or fall off in the last month where we miss the playoffs, we go as he does and he goes NOWHERE.

Ike Davis impressing, but it's only Spring Training. Still something encouraging.

This is true but it disgusts me that there is ultimately nothing to look forward to this year. I love baseball but I hate waiting. Its bad enough we havent been to the playoffs since '06 but when the opportunity for this team to be proactive and make positive moves to compete for a WS ring comes and goes without the Mets doing everything they can to save face...it just feels sickening. We shouldve gotten Lackey

people said the same thing last year when we didnt get Lowe. and now atlanta is trying to get rid of him or at least they were before... besides lackey didnt wanna come here anyway so thats moot. im not saying im happy about our current position but this season will not be a wash, and if we are in the chase at the allstar break OMAR WILL make the move and get a pitcher.
were building momentum. I approve.

I kinda agree now...after watching them play this spring I really like the young guys we have waitiing to come up...The announcers have been talking heavily about trading FMart later in the year but i think they should keep him and get rid of Beltran...Call me crazy but he's 33 and I think he's on the downside of his career, piling up injuries/surgeries while still having one of the more expensive contracts on the mets..Im not a fan of the Mets inefficient spending so Im always in favor of fleecing those type guys for younger talent or more needed talent..

I realize this thread has been gloomy lately. but if you didnt already know reyes is back and Opening Day is not out of the question. It also appears that Minaya is shopping around GMJ in search of pitching help. Based on his pretty good spring training, it may seem that his stock has risen since he was acquired. WELL PLAYED OMAR. add that with the fact the prospects have had very impressive spring training, all signs point to a positive season. LETS GO METS

It was nice to see Jose back out there. With him back and once Beltran's back, I'm not concerned TOO much with our offense, though I really would've liked to see someone else at 2nd base. Castillo just isn't productive offensively, he just takes a lot of pitches (which can have its positives) but all he does is hit singles, can't hit a sac fly to save his life and just isn't a threat at the plate.

I just can't believe in our starting pitching past Johan until they prove something, which just hasn't happened. Ollie will never amount to anything other than a dude that will have a great start once in a while. Maine and Pelfrey have shown potential but just can't put it together. None of those three is a #2 pitcher anyway.

Pelf had a great year and then an off year last season so the verdict is still out (and very young).

Maine is probably our 2nd best pitcher but always hurt.

Funny thing is, Ollie has thrown NOTHING BUT STRIKES this spring, at least you work on correcting things.

I swear you are the only person in the world who thinks highly of Pelf.  Not saying that he is a bad pitcher, but we often see kids come in have success early on, then hiter figure them out and they struggle.  Unless Pelf has really worked on that 3rd pitch he'll never be more than a back-end starter.

Well he was pretty damn good two years ago and had a set back last season (especially being hailed as the number 2 unfairly).

Dude is only 25 and has 3 good fastballs (esp to right handed hitters), like most young pitchers its all mental. He'll either figure it out or he won't, but we've seen how good he has the potential to be.

He aiin't no number 2 though, at least not yet.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Maine or Pelf are bad or that it's time to give up on them...I just think we have 3 dudes that we could compete with if they were the 4-5 starters. Pelf COULD be a solid 3 guy, but he's also really inconsistent, even in his best year. In order for me to have faith in our rotation, we would need a legit #2 starter, which we most definitely do not have.

###!, I hope he and Maine have great years, I think they're capable of it but there's just not enough proof that it'll happen and I don't think you can count on them.

Yo, I've been telling my dad that since November. Beltran could bring you back a really good haul that will rebuild your farm system in an instant. If we're five games out in June Omar, and Fernando Martinez is killing in Triple A, let's trade Omar and get a couple of really good pitching prospects who are near ready and hope one of them catches fire in August and you call him up to make that late push. I'm willing to have our season go that way, because honestly, I don't see us going too far with our current rotation. I love the guys, Niese especially, but we need another difference maker.

Maine just gave up a HR in the 1st. It's like our starters are throwing extended batting practice for the other teams.

You're not going to get back what you think you will on Beltran. Unless he comes back and completely tears the cover off of the ball which I doubt with him being rusty. You'd be better off showcasing Reyes if you're looking to rebuild the farm system.

And you better hope that pipe dream of switching the Nats to the AL East and the Rays to the NL East is just that...

Following yesterday’s game, Jerry Manuel said:
    • images
Jon Niese has the inside track to be the team’s fifth starting pitcher.  They will make a definitive decision soon.
    • The Opening Day center fielder job is still too close to call.
    • Johan Santana will make his last spring start in a minor league game – next stop: Opening Day.
    • Jose Reyes will continue to workout.  Reyes will eventually play in a game, then get a day off, and the team will ease him back in to action.
    • Fernando Nieve is in the mix to be the team’s set-up man.
    • Despite missing time with pink eye, Francisco Rodriguez is ready for Opening Day.
Post Game: Jerry’s Comments, & Feliciano Wants 8th Inning
March 29, 2010 at 5:33 pm · 12 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

Following today’s game, Jerry Manuel talked to reporters and essentially said:
    • Jose Reyes looked good.  Reyes is likely to next run the bases, then play in a minor league game.  He would not say either way if Reyes will or will not be ready for Opening Day.
    • Jon Niese continues to be impressive.
    • The team will have information about the final pitching staff on Thursday.
    • 3588543501_2cd676e3f7.jpg
Nothing seems to phase Jenrry Mejia, who also continues to be impressive, though he does not see him as a set-up guy to start the season.
    • He likes LHP Raul Valdes, who, if on the roster, would allow him to use Pedro Feliciano as an eighth-inning, set-up man.
Later, according to SNY producer Matt Dunn, Feliciano said he still very much wants to be the team’s set-up man, saying:
“I’m working hard.  I’ll do whatever Jerry wants to do.  I don’t feel comfortable being just a lefty specialist.  I want to be the set up man… I think I’m gonna get the job.  I came here ready to face the righties, and I’m ready for it.
