Nike Zoom Vaporfly Elite 2017

This release was maddening. I literally hit "pay" 3 seconds after 7:00am PST and I received an error message that it was sold out. A buddy of mine had the same experience, as did many people here apparently.

I don't think this was "bots" or re-sellers. I think NIKE released 2 pairs of shoes for every size.

Another highly limited release to create hype and demand.

Agreed. I had a few devices at the ready and could not find them in the store, as other folks on here were able to. Once I got the text notification, I knew it was wayyy too late.

(goes to StockX and opens wallet...)

Just playing devils advocate, but could it just be that Nike didn’t have a full run of the Next%’s ready for an all out release and instead of delaying the general release they took what supply they did have ready and played them off with the London hype?

Anyway, I was fortunate enough to snag a pair in 10.5, but I was also actively searching through the app about 15 minutes prior to the actual release. They DID show up a few minutes early for me. I plan on racing a half in them in 3wks from now, looking forward to seeing what they are like.

Nike also needs to ditch this text message alert crap or at least fix it so that it works. I never did get a text for this release. For the PegTurbo release I got the message about an hour late, so I wasn’t gonna bank on that again.

yah i got the text message 5 min after 7am pst

i think there was a size 5.5 left

You took the 10.5 that I was gonna wear at the same race!! (BK Half, I'm assuming).

I, too, checked the NRC App early, but could not find the Next% in the app. Apparently it was nested towards the bottom of the page. It was only when a drop-down notification showed up inside the app that I was able to locate the shoes and add them to my cart. But by then it was too late.

And agreed that the text notifications are totally pointless when they come through 5 minutes after the actual release.

I’m running the Cellcom Green Bay half up here in Wisconsin. Makes a loop through “Lambert Field”. That’s the race I ran 1:11:15 at last year. Hoping to run sub-1:11, but we’ll see.

Good luck to you in your HM as well!

Damn it Justin! Stole my 10.5 as well... Lol

I have a half on Sunday and targeting sub 1:20. We'll see how it pans out now that you took the extra advantage. Haha

I have a pair of Flyprint with 30 miles that I'm planning to use in my half, so I'm not too bummed about taking the L on Next%. But hopefully it won't be long before a re-stock, anyone have insight on that?

1:11 is blazing!! I'm going for sub 1:20. Good luck to all us 10.5s!

Question for you. Since the Flyprints didn't release in half sizes, did you go with a 10 or 11?

I sized down to a 10 in the Flyprint and it fits me perfectly.

I'm a "roomy 10.5". When I wear a 10.5 I have about a half inch of space infront of the big toe, and I'm fine with that kind of room. An 11 would have been too big.

This was a huge dilemma for me while waiting in line for the NYC release. Fortunately a buddy of mine was ahead of me and walked out with the 10. He let me try it on before I had to choose.

How crazy are we for dropping $675 on a shoe that we can't even try on first?

I'll take that lightly used Flyprint pair off your hands and you can use the funds to go pick up the NXT%....:D

Haha I think I'm gonna hang onto the Fyprint, especially since god only knows when we'll have a re-stock of the Next%

That said, I'm not sure that the midsole of the Flyprint is exactly the same as the Next%. The midsole on the Flyprint has a much different feel than that of the 4%. The Flyprint is MUCH softer/spongier. It's almost as if the Flyprint is pure zoomX and the 4% midsole is somewhat watered down zoomX.

Can anyone confirm this? I would be interested in hearing from someone who has the Flyprint/Elite.... I know the shape of the midsole is the same as Next%. But is it also the same material?

First I’ll say 1:11 is sweet HM time. Hope you go sub 1:10! GL!

Apologies for the long post below.

I’ve had VaporFly v1, v2, and elites. Also 2018 and 2019 versions of Flyprints. VaporFly Next% arrive today.

Here’s my take... for me (2:53 best marathoner). Nothing outstanding. I know my time would improve by just doing more meaningful workouts. Regardless of what is on my feet.

I do believe the added cushioning does help in recovery the days following. For example: I did Boston in 2:56 and 13 days later did a 2:53 in NJ (matching my best).

I would not have been able to bounce back as quick wearing my Saucony type a’s.

To Vayporflie’s point above about feeling that flyprints are superior. Maybe I can’t totally speak to this since I have only tried on my flyprints and not worn them to race... I just feel that based on running world and tempo journals article regarding the VaporFly Next% that these ARE the new fastest.

Just a few reasons why: heel to toe reduced to 8mm. Feeling more like a racer. Less weight. More foam. Less sweat/water absorption (1/10th less). Better lateral lacing system. Grippier soles.

These Next% are beasts. Side note: on the name I think it’s great too. Avoid the awkward alternatives (5% but not quite 5%, VaporFly 2.0, vaporweave, Flyprint 2, VaporFly Elite, VaporFly 2019, etc).

Full disclosure I JUST SOLD MY FLYPRINTS FOR $2500. It was the second pair I sold at that price. I can’t justify keeping them. I’m not Kipchoge. The difference for me is going to come in the form of more work not a half a gram lighter footwear. These shoes last 2 races MAX. They come in whole sizes (I’m a half sizer). The new VaporFly Next% has to be better. Why else would the best runners in London wear them..

Why did someone pay so much when they could’ve got VaporNext % for $275 this summer? Collectors item? They’re awkward to walk around in. No fashion statement to be made.

Don’t get me wrong... I love the “cool clear see through” box. But say I wear them and have a bad race. I’ll be kicking myself over losing out on all that profit. Not to mention the London ones from a year ago (Blk/Grn) came in a plastic “sample bag”. Not in a cool box.

So I have no problem parting ways with them. Ironically, I have to ship them this afternoon. The same time the Next’s arrive.

My VaporFly Elite (NYC pair 1/100) will be a tougher sell. WHO IS IN THE MARKET!? The Vaporflys widely available now ARE flyknit. Nike just explained how Vaporweave is better than flyknit. It’s dated technology with less than average durability.

But I guarantee you... some knucklehead will drop $2k on them.

To your point on the Next% now being the fastest... there was an article on Wired about them which stated that Nike had another study on the new Next% done, same as they did for the 4%. One of the scientists involved stated that the results for the first test were to be freely discussed, which is also where they came up with the 4%. The results from the second test were even better, presumably they were seeing between 4 and 5% better efficiency (over traditional flats, not over the OG 4%), which is probably why the prototypes were originally named 5%, but the scientist said that there was a Non-Disclosure Agreement to be signed for this second test. So that’s interesting. Wired made the claim that these new ones may force the IAAF to act with some form of rules change. I’ll find the link to the article.

Quote from the biomechanist at UC Bolder who was involved with both studies:

"What I can say on the record is that the Vaporfly Next% provided a statistically significant improvement in running economy over the original Vaporfly 4% in our test subjects," Hoogkamer says. "Overall, it just performed better."

Wow great Wired article! I love the sort of “ins-and-outs” of how the shoe became to be.

Couple of interesting tidbits. 1) no mention of flyprints. Could be because they’re not as available to the masses as the general VF4% is. There was a mention to “elite” model. And how the Next% borrowed their sole (which doesn’t allow pebbles or debry to get stuck in the grooves). To me it’s comparing apples and apples. The diffierence between any of the models to the average runner is a non factor. We’re not ou here to “split hairs” so to speak.

2) I could be reaching with Nike’s line of thinking but I know the 4% name evokes a sort of negativity amongst “running purists” who refuse to use them. The name change to Next% instead of keep piling up numbers each time it’s improved [5%, 6%, 7%..] has everything to with this statement -> "But how much of an advantage will the Next%s actually provide—and will it be enough to compel the IAAF to act?" - changing her name might change perception. Might be a way for Nike to downplay their effectiveness. At first they needed to sell how good they were. Now everyone knows how good they are and their next challenge is... how can we keep them from being banned in competition.

Next% arrived, custom boxing and shoe bag with these ones!

There’s definitely more cushion right under the ball of the foot, and the rocker from there to the tip of the shoe seems much more aggressive.

Great pics. Also glad to see one of the competitive runners on the thread snagged a pair. Any chance you can jump on your treadmill to give us an initial running review?

I jogged around my house for a bit and that was my initial feeling, more cushion under the balls of my feet and the shoe kind of drops away from there to the toes. The lockdown feels like the VF1, more secure than the flyknit. I’ve got 10.5 in all of my VF and 10.5 in these is perfect. The 10.5 flyknit felt a little tight, especially up in the toe box, but the same size in the Next% is much more comfortable, similar to the VF1.

I plan on doing a 60 minute MP Tempo run in them a week from Monday, I’ll let you guys know how they feel. My HM is the Sunday after that and I plan on wearing them then as well.

Love them! Agreed about the lockdown. Whole shoe feels sleeker and secured the foot better. At first I thought a little tight but stood up and noticed that vaporweave material is very nice.

I’m impressed! An all around beauty. Can’t wait to race in them. Already day dreaming about my race kit for my next marathon.
