the whole idea of buying a "luxury item" however is largely trying to fit in and separate yourself from a poorer class.

As someone who has bought a few items in the past, i will say that luxury items do come with a certain amount of craftsmanship to them that you wouldn't get from other items, with that said there are 10'000 leather bags out there. It's but so much quality you can obtain.

I have a $50 Ralph Lauren Belt, I've had a 200+ Gucci belt.... the quality wasn't worth 4-5x markup.

Celine is selling leather bags between 5000-10'000. They are leather bags, is there leather a little better quality than that of a $500 dollar bag yes, is it worth the mark up a RESOUNDING HELL NO.

Hell YSL, just completely jacked the Jordan 1's and released them at 3-4X the price the J's retailed for. People aren't rushing to buy those simply because the quality is that good.

I am way distinguishably older than a traditional student. Graduate actually. I just like hearing other people's perspective. And so that you're not stating an opinion that undermines a great thread for us more mature NTer's, what's your perspective?

I encounter my fare share of really poor to homeless people a day, and i will say its a humbling experience.

For the rich i know some very personally and they are a bit douchey but are so for appearance.

In the end i treat everyone how i liked to be treated.

I bet more people have bought that $50 ralph belt than the $200 gucci belt....

sales wise, the higher up the markup, the less sales it gets overall... so most people only buy mid level luxury goods anyway.

I know "wealthy" people who buy for design and quality...

they would go ham if they bought a gucci/louis/SLP item that didn't have exceptional quality....

would return a purse/shoe for loose threads or thin leather quickfast.

The whole "buying for the brand" is new money and broke people....

Why do some people do this?...if I'm gonna act like my floors are made out of precious diamonds I rather not invite anyone over, making people take off their shoes is rude.

My mother does this and I always fight with her about it, she even has a surgical booties dispenser at the entrance of her apt...is borderline crazy.

How do you not understand this concept? Your shoes have been literally everywhere, from the yard, to the streets(probably not so much the streets for you but you get the point), to 7-11 to wherever else you've been that day.  Some folks simply don't want all that being tracked through their house.  I don't see the problem with taking off my shoes when I walk into someone's crib, I wasn't even raised like that but find myself doing it at my own spot.  How in the hell do you find this 'rude?'

kids like playing on the carpet, they lay down and do activities, watch TV, and just generally chill down there even when a good couch is available.

kids like chilling on the floor.


infants crawl around on the floor, that's how they build up to walking.


So if you come into my house with your shoes on you're sullying the floor my kids are on. If you can't get that you're pretty daft. If your folks didn't discourage such behavior then you were just raised dirty, facts.

 Only partially. If I'm invited over to a friends for a party and we're not kicking it in carpeted rooms, chances are most people (including myself) will have their shoes on.

High end luxury, maybe.

But some would look at your Ralph Lauren belt that's $50.... and it just may be 4x the quality of your local $12 walmart belt.

There's a point to where you're not paying for quality anymore, you're paying for the name...

But luxury is indeed subjective,
