NT Gardeners Thread

Let me first say that I am not an expert, I am still learning. This is about my 4th year that I have picked up this hobby so I am still learning. The journey will be fun.

I would say the first and most important thing you need to educate yourself about is Soil. Before you do anything, get familiar with Soil

Again, I suggest keeping a notebook/composition book of notes from things you learn because it will feel like a LOT.

Don't try to learn everything and/or grow everything during your first year.

I came from a family of farmers. My folks use to sell at farmers market in San Francisco.
I grow mostly fruits and tropical fruits. It is challenging to grow tropical stuff in 9b zone but it can be done with certain plants.
My tree have been flowering and budding for a few weeks not

Beautiful...

Can someone give me some advice on this please? I JUST got this lemon tree from a store and planted it. Had it for about a week and 3 days. Next thing I know the leaves start to get these yellow spots on them. What’s going on? Could this be from overwatering or underwatering?

usually over watering causes leaves to yellow...lack of nutrients as well...i suggest getting a citrus fertilizer and/or cutting back on the watering

Okay, thanks. I’m just confused on what’s happening. I just started getting into this so I’m a complete novice but I used a little “Citrus Miracle Gro” mix in the soil as well when I first planted it. I figured they needed a decent amount of water with the summer heat already rearing it’s ugly head. Don’t feel like I’ve drowned them, but maybe I’ve given them too much unknowingly. How long do you recommend to water and how many days in a row?

once a week should be plenty...if you been watering everyday i'd slow down and put a little more of the miracle gro and let the nutrients do the work for you... keep applying every month or so. did you use any compost/manure when planting? where are you located?

John00 John00 What type of Soil are you using?

I would suggest making your own blend/mixture. Something that allows for more drainage.

I just recently got put on to the concept. I posted 2 videos at the top of this page.

Currently in the on the west coast. I used some organic chicken manure, Miracle Gro Citrus and planting soil mixed with the original soil from the hole that I dug to plant the tree. I figured that would be more than enough nutrients for it. I also filled the hole with water before putting the soil back in surrounding the plant. The instructions that came with the plant said to do that. The dirt is pretty loose but compact though, so it’s not like floating on water. I’ll water once a week then and see if that works.

It might not have drain as fast as I thought it was going to. I was/am just really focused on how the heat would possibly kill them I might have lost sight of possibility overwatering.

John00 John00 I would take the soil out, throw some Peat Moss into that mixture, and throw it back in. Just to allow for some more drainage.

I even throw a scoop sand in there to help it out as well.

What city do stay at? Trying to get an idea of your climate before I give you advice. Any idea what your soil type is?

Today it’s been 2 weeks since I planted my cayenne peppers and there’s nothing yet. I’m thinking maybe it hasn’t been warm enough, there’s only been 3-4 days where it was 80+ for the whole day. Other than that it’s been 40-50 at night and 60-70 during the day. I see different answers like 10-21 days for them to come so hopefully this week they will

my spinach and lemon basil are sprouting and doing fine though

I got a birds of paradise plant in my living room. Some of the leafs have been wrapped tight for a few months now. What can I do to open them up?

Looks great

I just pulled a bunch of strawberries this afternoon...almost a gallon sized Ziploc bag full

Already gave them to my sister
Thanks, some have just started turning red, I'll try and take a pic before I pick them.

Planted some apple seeds with water, in my backyard, with my nephews help. Will update once we get a tree. Been 8 months. No tree yet.

Trying my hand with some cannibalism. Since I am growing the ginger, I am going to try and feed the ginger plants with the pulp from when I make Ginger Juice. I wonder how this will affect the ginger plants.

cosmiccoffee9 cosmiccoffee9 Don't know why I thought about you while I typed this out.

Peppers love the hot soil. Where are you located?

I just put my Habanero Seedlings into the ground since we will be @ 90 degrees today in DC. It was 60* degrees a few days ago and it was in the 50s during the night.
