I cant have another speeding ticket on my record. I'm in the market for a decent radar detector. Can someone name some reliable ones and price ranges. Thanks

The radar gun finds you before your radar detector finds the radar, words of the wise, don't speed.

this, they are just a waste of money. If you want to invest a grand or 2 you can get deflectors built into the front part of your car. Or laser scramblers will do the trick

um, the problem with that is they are ILLEGAL...Just don't speed, but in Cali is hard. With thier recent budget cuts, i've had a few friends get pulled over for doing 5-10mph over the speed limit....

Yo,

Dont listen to these fools. Speeding gets you places and if you do a lot of interstate driving they can be especially helpful. Someone above mentioned the Valentine1. Its a pretty good radar, but I dont think they've released updated versions on a consistent basis like the Escort company. Personally, I've owned 2 Escort radars in my lifetime and they have SAVED MY %%#. They may be pricey, but they pay themselves off after 2 speeding tickets. I would recommend the Escort Passport 9500. You may look at the price and

but after the speeding tickets and the time you spend doing defensive driving to keep them off you record the $500 will be well worth it. Main diff between this and the Valentine is that the Valentine has indicator arrows to tell you where the signal is coming from.

That said, you also should incorporate a defensive mentality into your driving. Ie. If you're hauling %%# over the speed limit and you're coming up on a hill where you cannot see the other side, its a good idea to let off the gas and coast uphill. this will return you to normal speed for the cop that may be hiding at the top of that hill with a Laser (point and shoot) radar gun. Thats just an example. Interestingly, though, Escort claims that their tests can account for over-the-hill type speed traps, etc.

just my .02.

P.S. They're illegal in some states, but that shouldnt stop you. Check your laws. There are also devices to conceal the radar so you won't have to quickly toss it under your seat if you get pulled over.

A radar detector is nothing more than a device with a sensor on it. When that sensor is triggered by radar bands flying though the air (cops use Ka band and K band to clock you) the detector will make an audible noise. Because a radar is nothing more than a sensor, it does not give off its own detectable waves. There is no way cops can detect its presence unless they see it. Perhaps wanksta23 is referring to the build-in radar deflectors that are outfitted to vehicles. These deflectors will make your car like a bootleg stealth bomber. If a cop shoots you with his radar he will receive an error message. At that point he can ascertain that you are using a radar deflecting device.

Get one.

They're only illegal in like six states. I have one, and I can't say it's saved my %+% because I don't speed like I used to, but if I'm late to work because of traffic and it clears up, I'm goin' for it. Speeding for me isn't a full-time thing anymore, just a means to an end.

Check CL first. A used one may not look as good, but it works just fine.

By the way, either run the power behind the dash or find one that keeps a charge. Mine has to be plugged in at all times and that cable is annoying as all hell.

not really, it usually just wont show a speed, which could mean a number of things besides a laser jammer. by the time he hits you with the laser gun, your jammer will alert you, allowing you to slow down when youre near the cop. its not designed to allow you to haul #%* driving by the cop and get away scot-free.

Radars dont stop you from running red lights or loosing control and flying through the windshield.

I have 1, but it has a mind of its own, I havent had a ticket since I got it and I have been without it for a lil over a year now. I put it im my 87 Monte Carlo SS.

Yes, cops can detect if you have a radar detector. I know Va cops have an updated radar gun that can detect the "energy" that your detector gives off. There are stories to prove it. Again, I only know this for Va because they are absolutely anal about it. There are only 3 detectors that aren't detectable in Va right now.... the Passport 9500xi and the 2 Sti Bel detectors.

Get a V1.

I have one, picks up the police along way out. However they've changed their radars I believe making the V1 not as effective. Its stupid to use it around town though, I only use it on only drives up the country.
