Are there any downfalls to wearing basketball shoes while wrestling?

For me, yes. I wore these flyknit cross trainers and air max 90s in the ring before and they had too much traction. The ring mat was getting caught up as I ran the ropes and in general, I just couldn't move as seamlessly. It's definitely something to adjust to as opposed to boots or shooter shoes, which tend to be more flat. If you look at Jimmy Uso, his Red Air Forces have a black sole and I think that was to flatten the bottom. Jey just goes out there raw with the regulars and they're low tops to top it off.

Others have customized their sneakers to have flat soles as well. I definitely respect those that do it, but could never be me. The best for ring feel are shooter shoes (amateur wrestling shoes) due to their lowness to the earth, but if I were to ever get back in the ring, I would probably switch to boots. Boots can have varying levels of soles (see Kane's lifts when he first came to the company), but ultimately last longer and have a cleaner look in ring when done right. Love the Rush, Dragon Lee, Naito, and Velveteen Dream's styles for example. Andrade's last up the side are pretty slick as well.
