Official 10' NFL Offseason Thread: CIN sign T.O. 1yr/2m

Another note, this is a PURE extension.
Brick had 2 years left (which included a club option for 10mill in 2011) so he'll be around until 2018...
'Brickashaw's real deal? One year, $5.3225 million
Posted by Mike Florio on July 8, 2010 9:46 PM ET
We knew it.

When reports emerged of a six-year, $60 million extension with an eye-popping $34.8 million in guaranteed money, we knew that there was fluff in the new contract between the Jets and left tackle 'Brickashaw Ferguson.

We just had no idea how much fluff was there.

We'veobtained a copy of the contract, and we've studied it carefully.  Thecontract constitutes, as a practical matter, a one-year, $5.3225million arrangement with no other guaranteed money earned or vestedthrough the end of the 2010 season.

The amount comes from a basesalary of $622,500, a signing bonus of $1.6 million due within fivedays of July 15, 2010, and a roster bonus of $3.1 million due withinfive days of July 15, 2010.

That's it.  No other guaranteestrigger unless and until Ferguson makes it through the 2010 seasondisplaying adequate skill and, more importantly, not suffering seriousinjury.

If Ferguson endures a career-ending injury at any pointthis year (think LeCharles Bentley on the first day of training camp,2006), Ferguson gets none of the rest of the money.  If Ferguson simplysuffers a serious but not career-ending injury at any point this year(think Leon Washingtonmimicking Joe Theismann against the Raiders in 2009), the Jets likelywill terminate the contract and then try to re-sign Ferguson for alesser amount -- or watch him walk away.

And, amazingly, the contract contains no future guarantees based on injury.  None.  Not a penny.

IfFerguson is on the Jets' 80-man roster on February 15, 2011, Ferguson's2011 base salary of $5.615 million becomes guaranteed only for skill. This means that, if the Jets thereafter decide that Ferguson stinks, they still have to pay him his 2011 base salary.  As a practicalmatter, the money also is guaranteed for injury after he passes hisoffseason physical, since he'd be owed his entire base salary if he,for example, tears an ACL while at a minicamp practice.

On thatsame day, February 15, 2011, Ferguson's $9.985 million base salary for2012 becomes guaranteed, but again only for skill. So if he suffers aserious injury in 2011, the Jets can cut him before 2012 and avoidnearly $10 million in additional future expenses.

Finally,Ferguson's base salary of $7.25 million for 2013 becomes guaranteed --again for skill -- if he's on the 80-man roster on the second day afterthe start of the waiver system for the 2012 season.  So if he suffers aserious injury in 2012, the Jets can easily avoid that money due in2013.

Ferguson also has a $3.9 million option bonus, but theJets have an extended period within which to decide whether to pay it. The first possible date is the first day of the next league year, whichif there's labor peace will come in early March, 2011.  The last dayfor exercising the option will be the day after the firstregular-season game in the next league year.  So they can cut him aslate as September 2011 and avoid that $3.9 million payment.

None of those payments will be made if Ferguson endures a serious injury, or if his skills suddenly evaporate.

Whilesome may brush this off as a cash-flow issue only, since futurepayments fully guaranteed for injury and skill must be fundedimmediately, the Jets could have guaranteed the full amount of thefuture guaranteed base salaries (which total $22.85 million) for injurynow and skill later, like the Bears did with defensive end Julius Peppers. The Jets didn't, and now Ferguson will bear the risk of that every timehe laces up his cleats from now until the end of the 2010 season.

Whathas Ferguson gained?  His base salary of $3.122 million in 2010 (theterms under his prior deal) has increased to a total payout of $5.3225million.

So he picked up $2.2005 million now, with noguarantees moving forward.  Though he'll be in line for more than $22million guaranteed if he gets through 2010 (and 2011) unscathed, healready was in line for at least $10 million guaranteed next year, thefinal year of his rookie deal.

Bottom line?  As usual, the real terms of the contract fall far short of the amount initially reported.
Lions release Daniel Bullocks, go 0-for-40 in five-year draft span
[h5]Published: Thursday, July 08, 2010, 10:00 PM     Updated: Friday, July 09, 2010, 8:53 AM[/h5]

ALLEN PARK -- The final two have fallen.

With the trade of linebacker Ernie Sims earlier in the offseason and Thursday's release of safety Daniel Bullocks, not a single Detroit Lions player remains from five consecutive years of drafts (2002-06).

Former Lions president Matt Millen selected 40 players during that five-year stretch, and every one of them has left Detroit. Some were traded, some left as free agents and some were given their outright release.

Sims, a first-round pick in 2006, was dealt to the Philadephia Eagles in a three-team trade that brought Denver Broncos tight end Tony Scheffler to Detroit. Bullocks, who was fighting to come back from knee problems, was cut.

Bullocks, a second-round pick in 2006, looked to be shaping into a solid player during his rookie season. But he suffered a knee injury in the following year during a preseason game and never fully recovered.

Last month, Bullocks said he was close to 100 percent but wasn't quite there yet. During offseason workouts, he wasn't getting a lot of reps in the defense, and that's usually an indication that a player doesn't figure prominently into a team's plans.

Among the 38 players gone from that five-year stretch are six first-round choices: quarterback Joey Harrington, receivers Charles Rogers, Roy Williams and Mike Williams, running back Kevin Jones and Sims.

There also were five second-round picks: defensive end Kalimba Edwards, linebackers Boss Bailey and Teddy Lehman, defensive tackle Shaun Cody and Bullocks.

Good to see Devin Thomas working out with OchoCinco. God knows we need him to breakout at WR this year. Still wouldn't be against signing T.Owens either.

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The NFL suspended Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly without pay for the upcoming season -- and perhaps beyond -- for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Jolly's suspension begins immediately and will continue through at least the 2010 season. He will be eligible to apply for reinstatement after the Super Bowl in February.

Jolly is facing drug charges in Houston after his July 2008 arrest outside a club for possession of at least 200 grams of codeine. If convicted, Jolly faces up to 20 years in prison.
Titans, Chris Johnson work out a new deal
Posted by Mike Florio on July 19, 2010 4:05 PM ET
A league source tells us that the Tennessee Titans and running back Chris Johnson have agreed to terms on a new contract that solves the financial problems between team and player.

At least for 2010.

As expected, the arrangement will pay Johnson more money this year, with no additional years being added to the contract.  Johnson currently is signed through 2012.

The new deal has not yet been signed, so we suppose it could fall through.  But at this point it's unlikely.

Specifics aren't yet known.  It had been reported that the Titans would likely accelerate some escalators money Johnson unlocked for future years as a way to bump up his $550,000 base salary for 2010.

Johnson, the 2009 AP offensive player of the year, had said that he can't play for only $550,000.  Now, he won't have to.
Colts, agent dispute NFL.com report on Bob Sanders
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 19, 2010 5:17 PM ET
The Indianapolis Colts and the agent for safety Bob Sanders are disputing a report about Sanders' health and contractual status.

Although Sanders said in June that he felt great, Michael Lombardi of NFL.com reported this week that Sanders might never be able to play football again as a result of a ruptured bicep tendon suffered last year. The Colts, however, say they stand by Sanders' comments about his health from last month.

"Nothing has changed since June," a team spokesman told the Indianapolis Star.

Lombardi also reported that Sanders "reduced his contract," but Sanders' agent, Tom Condon, told the Indianapolis Star that's not true. Condon said he's also not aware of any new injury issues.

So either Lombardi's report is wrong, or Condon and the Colts are lying. We'll be interested to see if Lombardi issues a correction, or if he offers any more details to substantiate his report.
Hopefully the report is off. Bob Sanders elevates that Indianapolis defense so much when he's out there (which is not often).

Chris Johnson and Tennessee working out a deal was inevitable.

Cutler and T.O. together could either be fantastic or catastrophic.
Why a Revis extension probably won't get done
There is a little-known rule in the NFL's collective bargaining agreement that is having a big-time impact on the New York Jets' stalled negotiations with star cornerback Darrelle Revis -- and it likely will sabotage any chance of signing Revis to a contract extension before the start of the season.

It's called the "reallocation rule,

The reality of Bryant's deal - which does not include normal 5th year escalators as is norm with Dallas - sets up a likely new deal ...

After year 3 of the contract.
