Official 2009 NCAA Tournament Thread. The Very Best Have Gathered Upon One Stage.

My column from today's newspaper and my blog: Crawford's Corner Tournament Breakdown

Busy scribbling teams out in the Sweet 16 and finishing up your tournament brackets? Here's my formula to March Madness victory, free of charge to my blogreaders.

Louisville, Memphis, UNC and either Duke/Tenn will be in the Final Four. I haven't decided whether or not to go with a Duke/UNC national semifinal or aHeels-Vols battle.

I liked Memphis before the season started because of Freshman PG Tyreke Evans. I like Memphis as much, if not more now, to cut down the nets in Detroit.Plus one for Calipari's group. A group that plays great defense, displays its athleticism nightly and is better at the charity stripe compared to lastyear's runner-up team.

Pittsburgh/UConn tie for being the weakest one seeds. The loss of Dyson will inevitably stop the Huskies and Pittsburgh has too much trouble scoring.Don't have either in your Final Four. I have No. 9 Tennessee over the Panthers in round two. Gutsy? I know. I admit it's a stretch but I like how BrucePearl's bunch matches up with Pitt. Of course, the trifecta must be true for the Vols to have a legitimate shot.

Office Pool Rules from Crawford's Corner:

1. Don't pick your favorite team or by conference allegiance
2. Rely on perimeter shooting, rebounding and point guard play.
3. Don't look for the Cinderella. Like all Cinderella's, you will most likely pick the wrong one.
4. Pick squads that have been on a roll or won/played well in their conference tournament.
5. Last but not least, remember the big game coaches (Pitino, Calhoun, K, Williams, Boeheim, Izzo).

Be leary of upsets this season. After pondering the 2009 field, I don't expect too many upsets in the opening round. Siena over Ohio State seemsplausible, as does No.12 Western Kentucky over the 5th-seeded Fighting Illini. Outside of those two matchups, I'm not sure of too many teams fitting theglass slipper.

We all love Eric Maynor. (similar to America's love affair with Steph Curry last March) But let's face it, UCLA is better than VCU. UCLA has madethree straight trips to the Final Four. UCLA has one of the best defensive guards in the nation in Darren Collison. Please don't pick the Rams in this 11/6contest.

ACC fans, Wake Forest has the best shot outside the big two to make a deep run. Florida State is inexperienced, Maryland's defense is shotty at timesand Clemson is, well, Clemson. Boston College will lose to a red-hot Southern California squad in the first round.

Duke needs to be careful with Texas while UNC has a chance at being upset by Trent Johnson's Tigers in the second round. If Ty Lawson is 100%, the Heelsadvance to the National Title Game to face Memphis.

As I predicted nearly correct last season, Calipari gets a National Championship at Ford Field in Detroit in April.

I see no one has faith in my Buckeyes. Turner, Mullens, Buford, and Diebler are too much for ANYTHING Siena has.

Siena played Pitt and Kansas tough and beat two NCAA tournament participants (Cornell and Northern Iowa).

Four starters average double figures and SG Kenny Hasbrouck has 10 games of 20 or more points. 30 + twice.

They definitely have the players to compete with Ohio State.

when is the last time the same mid major team pulled a upset 2 years in a row? zags a 5 years ago? ohio state is going to beat the breaks off siena
When's the last time a mid major like that returned their first 6 rotation players?

If they were in the Big Ten, they would barely be a .500 team at best.

They would not beat Mich St., Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota, etc....

You guys are killing me. The only mid-majors that have a chance in the tourney are Butler and VCU.

How can you consider a 13 point loss a tough game?

They have NO size, that will be their downfall.

This is the most I've ever changed my bracket around...I'm having so much trouble but some upsets I chose earlier (Siena over PITT and UCLA over'Nova) I just don't see happening...

How was their size when they beat Ogilivy last year?

One of the Lopez brothers last year?

How bout the fact Ryan Rossiter was the most improved player in the MAAC this year?

Honestly, if you haven't seen them play outside of a game or 2...why even discuss them? You're gona look foolish.

They're better than VCU and I would love any reasons as to why they aren't....

OSU is a better team this year then Vandy was last year.

Turner is better in his sophmore year then Foster was his last year.

Maynor beat Duke by himself.

Maynor will go top 15 minimum in the NBA draft.

Sanders will be a pro as well at some point.

Do I need to go on?

Vandy was a 4 seed and Shan Foster was SEC POY...

How's that add up?

Maynor will go top 15 minimum in the NBA draft.
Nah.

And who's VCU beat this year? Siena's RPI is 18.

...

I'm not saying nor guranteeing a Siena win.

But there a better team than last year when they smacked Vandy. Does it add up to another win? Idk...but they have agood chance.

MAAC most improved player is not saying much at all.
It does if you could see what it's added to the team....

allen just in case Mizzou meets Memphis in the Sweet 16, can you provide a little briefing about the Tigers from Columbia? I'm worried that the Westregion will #@#@ up everyone's bracket.

That's up Nowitness ally..

I don't know much other than Carroll/Lyons and that statistically they're good and they press

The SEC BARELY got 3 teams in the tourney. And that was because Miss St. won the conference tournament.

Maynor will be the next point guard behind Jennings picked in the draft. Atleast thats what the "experts" say......

www.nbadraft.net

You keep screaming Vandy, like they were THAT good.

Where is Foster and Ogilvy now??????

Turner, Buford, and Mullens will be in the league.

What Vegas is thinkin...that CSU/Wake line is sketchy

You realize those "experts" compared Deshawn Stevenson to Michael Jordan, Dwight Howard to Kwame Brown, Adam Morrison to Larry Bird, etc. right?

Exactly why I said "Experts"

But they should have known better to compare high school players to NBA Greats.

They have got 10 times better since those predictions.

This sounds strange comin from me...

But is Carolina undervalued to most people this year?

I see less people taking them this year than last year.

Everyone says "oh they can beat, they have a weakness(es)"

Who doesn't???

Fact is with a healthy Lawson They are the best team....still beatable....but they'd still be the best.

Truth be told I think thats the thing thats bothering me the the most so far. Everybody expecting them to be bounced early, I need everybody to be on theirpenis so they can be arrogant and lose instead of having this underdog mentality

they're not as deep as last year and they STILL don't defend well.
on their best day i would take Pitt over anyone, including a UNC with a healthy Lawson.
but thats just my opinion.
