Not a cavs fan in the slightest, but I still don't understand that move. Waiters had a pretty good rookie season, but I just don't see that backcourt of him and Irving ever making deep runs together starting together.

I was in myrtle beach with 9 of my HS buddies during the draft last year. We were all convinced it was Barnes especially when Beal and MKG were off the board

I was dumbfounded.. Dudes didn't even know who Waiters even was

I can't answer that I was for Barnes all the way. Waiters better prove us all wrong next season and beyond.

Rook - you're a Cuse fan, right? Do you see Waiters as someone who could be more dynamic in a 6th man role down the road?

That 6th man role is what made him a top 5 pick in the draft, and a 6th man role is what he should be in the NBA. He's not a starter for a championship caliber team imho. Bring him off the bench like Crawford, Harden in OKC, Terry in Dallas, etc...and he'll play better overall.

Again, this is my honest assessment on him. Syracuse sports radios still debate on what he'll be in the NBA and most fans agree getting the best out of Dion is bring him off the bench and unleash him against 2nd units.

Also you look at the fact him and Kyrie together create a dynamic but very small backcourt. Teams with bigger guards eat them alive. Plus add in the fact Dion doesn't shoot a well percentage, yeah...

It seems a lot of people in here are writing MKG off which I find very silly. I still think he will be very, very good.

And Waiters is never going to be a long-term starter. They drafted a bench scorer. Which is fine, you need those. But there were more valuable options available.

Interesting read. Even Waiters was surprised by how high he got drafted. That being said (and I don't remember where he was projected to go), was there a chance he would have been there at 17 when they had their 2nd selection?

They drafted a bench scorer. Which is fine, you need those. But there were more valuable options available.

Yeah....drafting a future 6th man 4th overall is kinda dumbfounding. No matter how the Cavs brass tries to spin it, that was a MAJOR reach.

Also from the article P posted, it said that Dan Gilbert co-signed the pick before it happened. I wonder how much input he has on roster decisions? I know he's the man writing the checks, but is he calling some shots behind the scenes?

The Cavs were also quite high on Bradley Beal of Florida and Harrison Barnes of North Carolina. They had done exhaustive research on all four players. There wasn't much separating them. That's the real edge of any draft: Even with so many trained eyes and objective measurement tools, there's always an uncomfortable uncertainty. This is generally accepted if not at all embraced.

The Cavs' rankings did not totally jibe with what many outside the room felt. Especially on Waiters, a prospect who was not highly regarded in many mock drafts because he came off the bench in his two seasons at Syracuse and, more likely, because he'd shut down pre-draft workouts a month ago. He did not come to Cleveland for a private workout and meeting, for example, even though the Cavs and other teams had wanted to host him.

Waiters had gotten a promise from a team that it'd pick him and he and his agent, Rob Pelinka, were content to skip the normal process. There's a belief this promise came from the Phoenix Suns with the No. 13 pick, though Waiters and the Suns have so far refused to talk about it.

Aiight.

Look; I wasn't to fond of Waiters myself at first - but I've watched his game closely since we've drafted him - and dude has a killer instinct when he gets going and it can get scary.

He can slash to to basket at will, he can shoot the ball very well - his defense can improve but he was a rookie and I expect that to change with Mike Brown.
I wish I can pull up the highlights video of Waiters vs the Heat. He showed signs of greatness that night.

I mean, if you want the Cavs to be good, probably not.

He's Marcus Thornton, except he was a fourth overall, and Thornton was a second-rounder. I said it before the draft, and I feel even better about the comparison after a full season. They're the same dude. I got hooked on Thornton's game his rookie year, too. He came off the bench and scored like 40 here in Cleveland one game. Tough, aggressive scorers that can shoot a little bit (Thornton, a little more). But that's about it. When they're off, the overall value basically turns to negative. Those guys belong on the bench. Teams try to get more out of players like this, and it almost never works.

Yeah Animal Thug idk what you meant by shooting the ball very well. He is the epitome of a streaky shooter. Scott had to bench him countless of times for his horrible shot selctions. Of course he's young, made rookie mistakes and will only get better, but he needs to improve his shooting alot....ALOT.

On Dion Waiters

1. Waiters would not be a valible at 17, no chance, Raptors or Warriors would have taken him, they were locked into Waiters or Barnes. Raptors got neither.

2. If Dion Waiters is your starting 2 guard then you have a serious problems.

3. That Draft pick was a MISTAKE, an idiotic mistake, drafting my man Tristan is also turning out to be a mistake,

they need to reevaluate their entire scouting process.

4. The cavs picked a shooting guard, who doesn't have a consistent jumper and needs "stay in shape" top 5. When you put it like that it becomes even more ridiculous

5. Damian Lillard has an awesome jumpshot and is in great shape, why are you comparing them?

The Warriors were gunna take Waiters at 7. Couldn't have traded back further..

Ultimately they took Waiters over Drummond and Barnes. They already had their pg so Lillard is irrelevant.

Okay...but his games against playoff-calibur teams like the Spurs, Bulls, Jazz, Clippers, Hawks, Bucks.

I'm not saying this kid is going to be a SUPERSTAR. But to go as far as saying he won't be a starter in this league is ridiculous.

The 30 coaches that all voted him as All-Rookie First Team should provide insight on what his future may look like.

He can definitely be a 20 and 5 stat filler in this league.

Waiters will be our JR Smith once they start to contend.

I'm cool with Dion and Tristan.. Just think people need to realize that they may not live up to what a 4th pick should be but they will contribute for years to come.

Dude we get Dion is explosive, but what the else does that matter if he can't consistently make a jumper? His top 10 plays this year can rival many allstars. I agree he can be an elite scorer if he puts in the time at the gym and dedicates summers to improving his game. But like most people in here think, the Cavs won't become elite with him as your starting SG. This is a game of what if's though, in 2-3 years from now, he could become that lite D-Wade people were calling him at Syracuse, but we'll have to see.

It's about doing it consistently and efficiently.

Boom. This is the #1 factor when it comes to players in the NBA. Sure most players, if given the minutes, can put up 20-5, but if your shooting 35% from the field while doing it, getting constantly thrashed on defense, etc. then that doesn't mean ****.

Look at guys like Jerryd Bayless. He's a guy who could average 20-5 if he played superstar minutes, but his efficiency playing that many minutes would be :x
