The ink isn’t dry yet on Charlie Strong’s deal to USF, but it’s never too early to speculate on who his offensive and defensive coordinators will be once Strong arrives in Tampa.

The way the hiring process usually works is, once a head coach is named, the head coach will hire coordinators.

Once coordinators are in place the head coach will talk to his coordinator and start putting together a staff of assistants. Before we get into who the assistants, let’s figure out some possibilities of who the coordinators may be.

This is what I’m hearing, starting on defense:

Charlie Strong is a defensive minded coach. He’ll have a hand in the scheme and coordinating the defense. A hire on this side of the ball doesn’t necessarily have to be a veteran hire because Strong will be heavily involved.

That’s why Texas assistant Brian Jean-Mary makes sense. Jean-Mary has been with Strong dating back to his first year at Louisville. But he’s never been a coordinator and only coached linebackers.

Jean-Mary was also recruiting coordinator at Texas and Strong’s ace on the trail. Sources say Jean-Mary will need to be named coordinator for him to come to USF. He’s been contacted by others schools interested in bringing him on, including Arizona.

Raymond Woodie is the Bulls current defensive coordinator, but it’s unlikely he’d be retained in that role under Strong.

Switching over to offense, sources feel Jeff Traylor or Sterlin Gilbert will be the most likely candidate for the job under Strong.

Gilbert was Strong’s offensive coordinator last season at Texas. The biggest question with bringing him over to USF will be the money. Strong could potentially save some money with his defensive hire to give the salary pool on the offensive side a boost and help to lock up Gilbert.

Traylor coached tight ends and special teams at Texas. He’s never been an offensive coordinator, but he’s close with Strong and would be more affordable for USF. Traylor is three years removed from being the head coach at Gimer, a powerhouse program in Texas. Traylor also recruited well at Texas, something Strong has always valued when making hires for his coaching staff.

If USF were to make an in-house hire, current staff members T.J. Weist or Shaun King would make the most sense. Taggart called the plays at USF, so it makes it less likely that someone from the current staff would be promoted, but both King and Weist have a good grip of the offense and personnel on the roster.

Another interesting name that has popped up is former USF tight end coach Larry Scott. Scott is currently at Tennessee and recently interviewed for the FAU job, last year he was the interim head coach at Miami when Al Golden was fired with four games to go. Scott wouldn’t leave Tennessee for a position coach job at USF, but an offer to come on as the offensive coordinator would probably be enough to get him back in tampa.

An official announcement on coordinator and assistant coaching hires likely won’t happen until Charlie Strong has been introduced as USF’s new head coach. Until then, we’ll continue to update what we hear and any new possibilities in the mix.

Hearing from real good source Sterlin Gilbert and Sonnie Cumbie either already been talked to or occurring real soon today for OC job.

Later this week expect Chip Long and Phil Longo to meet/talk with Freeze about the OC job at Ole Miss.

Hot take question:

Why would USF hire Charlie after he failed at a program that has some of the best resources in the country?

It's USF...this was a GREAT hire for a school that otherwise would be used as a stepping-stone for a younger coach. Strong knows the state, knows the conference, and is at an age where if he succeeds, he might just be content with finishing his coaching career there. He was a terrible fit at Texas and in the Big XII. It's a different style of football there then what Strong may have been used to.

Sounds like he's gonna try to bring in his OC at Texas too, which will keep the TX pipeline open for him. Lots of potential with taking FL recruits and any leftover TX recruits.

Herman is hiring away Rutgers' offensive coordinator to be his passing game coordinator at Texas...

...huh?
