Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Season Thread Vol: (17-17)

Finally back at home, down 5-2 early, 2-run Heyward Homer, Addy Grand Slam, Zobrist 2-run Homer, and Schwarber solo BOMB knock off the Twins.

Darvish still feeling pain, shut down another week. :frown:

CJ back on a rehab stint tho. :pimp:

Well......we were down 3-0, came back, then fell down again 7-4, and now.......it's 14 to 9, with the bases loaded and one out in the 7th. We have 18 hits so far.

And somehow, no home runs today. 16 singles and 2 doubles.

Need to add a few more and let the pen have an easy close to the game. (hopefully)

So, we get a couple more hits but couldn't score again, W 14-9 it is. Now officially at the halfway mark in the season, 46-35, and that with Bryant on the DL twice, Rizzo on the DL, Yu, CJ Edwards, Morrow, and Chatwood STRUGGLING. Add it all up, and.....

We have the best offense in the NL. A +98 run differential, and we still have a chance to get CJ, Bryant, and Yu back in a week or so.

And we're a second half team. :nerd:

Oh, and Heyward had a 4 hit game for the 3rd time this month........

And we're a second half team. :nerd:

It's been an up and down season for the Cubbies.
I think most of us are just waiting till August till we go all in into baseball mode, we just gotta get healthy.

Y'all peeped that Sosa interview?
Sammy ain't helping himself bringing up Ernie's name in comparison but I feel where he's coming from. Just wish we could acknowledge him somehow, that man deserves better. I hate the fact that we waited till after Santo died before we retired his number, don't want that to be the case with Sammy either.

Jon Lester 3-run OPPO

Rizzo RBI double

Baez 2-run double

Schwarber RBI double

Contreras RBI single

That's just the 2nd inning.

This is without the NL leading hitter (Almora) and it's best player (Bryant)

Another W, 6 straight now, all without Bryant.

First career Homer for Both, Javy steals home (again) and Contreras adds the go ahead Solo home run plus a 2-run insurance double. :pimp:

Bryant and CJ should be back this weekend. *Fingers crossed*

Late 4 run rally in the 8th to beat the Reds.
Javy with 4 hits :nthat: :nthat: :nthat: :nthat:
Damn Reds have been killing us this year.

Damn the Reds!!

Barely pulling out the W with a 10th inning bases loaded walk.
Well take the W any way we can but these Reds have our number.

Javier Baez, Willson Contreras, Jon Lester all make the All Star team.

Everyone else get some rest.

51-36, 1 win from Darvish and Bryant/Rizzo only in the same lineup 30 times.

In 2016 (when we won 103 games) we were 52-35. And everyone was healthy all year (minus Schwarber)

Rizzo 0-21, goes 3 for his next 3 including a game tying RBI double in the 9th with the Cubs down to their final strike.

In the 10th, Baez with an infield single, steals 2nd, advances to 3rd on catcher throwing error, then the CF bobbles and Baez scores. :wow:  :pimp:

Now Lester/Hendricks to close out the first half. 1/2 is fine, but let's get both and get some rest.

Javier Baez with a 2-run double and a 3-run home run, he has 25 doubles, 5 triples, 19 homers, 18 stolen bases, 71 RBI, a .293 average and a well over .500 slugging percentage, PLUS his defense. He is the NL MVP so far.

The Brewers have lost five straight, and the Cards are one game over .500 and just fired Matheny.

Need Lester to be huge tomorrow. Get some rest, get Yu back, and make our usual second half run.

Down to the final batter, the Pirates beat the Brewers again.

Cubs put up another 7 and sweep SD, 55-38, season high 17 over, best record in the NL at the break. :pimp:

Lester 12-2
Baez his 72nd RBI

Darvish back soon, Edwards/Bryant/Rizzo get some rest, 2 more weeks before deadline to add an arm or two in the pen, oh and David Bote is balling.

This is comical. 11 guys with a wRC+ at 100 or higher. Most in MLB. (note, Bote is small sample size)

6 players with a WAR above 2. (if Rizzo could get going, we'd really be a nightmare for others)

The Cubs lead the league in Runs, Hits, RBI, HBP, IBB, .AVG, .OBP, and .OPS. They are 2nd in Doubles, Total Bases, and Sac Flys.

The one single area they don't lead is Home Runs which a lot of is due to Rizzo/Bryant bein banged up early, and Contreras not really hot yet. If those 3 pick it up, say 20-25ish, that will be a big second half boost.

All those categories, and they still haven't really hit their stride like they can.

Baez with 15 bombs in home run derby, and then leads off the game with a single.

Schwarber with 55 home runs in home run derby, but loses to future Cub Bryce Harper at the last second.

Contreras homers on the first pitch he sees.

Helluva'n All Star Break for the Cubs, and future Cubs. :pimp:

Rotation restart
Hendricks
Lester
Montgomery (Sat DH)
Chatwood (Sat DH)
Quintana

After Q, it's possible Darvish could start, and then they reshuffle again next week. (skip Chatwood, or move Monty back to the pen)

Another 9 runs, another comeback, another big inning. (5 in the 5th)

Happ a 2-run shot. Heyward 3 hits and a stolen bases.

Oh, and the two All Stars sat.
Baez did come in late.

Morrow back on the DL. :smh:

We've traded for another reliever, Jesse Chavez from Texas.

I wanted Lester to crush the Cards today, well, it's been the complete opposite. :smh:

Lester is getting drilled, Pirates 2017 style (the game he gave up like 9-10 in the first)

Need the bats to go nuclear and the pen to throw like a billion innings, with a doubleheader tomorrow.
