Dude...I just went through my freshman year at Texas Lutheran....Lock everything up and hide all your valuable stuff...especially during finalsweek, or the week before spring break or one of those breaks...dudes broke into my dorm.(i had a broken door, but it could still lock but, they just made iteven worse when they broke in)...the week of finals on Sunday stole my Ps3, about 6 games, 2 controllers, g-shock, mark ecko watch, two pairs of jordans I hadjust bought the aquas and the 8s from the package....I was furious man...just watch who you let in your room

Try to keep to a loose schedule. College great because so many things can happen spontaneously but at the same time, always going with the flow willprobably destroy you in the form of getting fat, failing classes and maybe even dying (alcohol poisoning or drug overdose). Plan to go to your classes, plan towork out a few times per week and avoid staying up all night. Having somewhat of a routine will keep you on track and on top of things so when you do party, you can set your mind free, enjoy the girls and drink and drugs and know that you will not flunk out of the place.

Working out is very important, almost as important as going to class. By staying in shape you will have energy, a sharp mind and less stress and all three ofthose things are crucial for doing well in school.

Another question, is having a laptop absolutely necessary? Can I get by without one? How tough would that be?

personally i would rather have a personal computer so you don't have to depend on a computer lab...

i plan on going to class every single day, but how bad is it to miss class, say your really sick or something, will it be hard to catch up with what youmissed?

If you're an engineering major get and enjoy a social life freshman year, because after that you won't have much of one if any.

i skimmed through all the responses and didnt see the one advice i needed when i was in school:

DO NOT GET A CREDIT CARD.

i repeat

DO NOT GET A CREDIT CARD.

that credit card is not worth the free tshirt or frisbee. trust me.
you really gotta learn how to live within your means. find out where free food is at. gotta humble yourself and try not to impress anybody with the latestkicks, clothes, electronics, etc.

go to class and seriously get good grades. there is PLENTY of time to party. hell, i partied six more years after college. (finally got married lol)

those are my only two missteps in college. getting credit cards and making horrible grades. if you do not know what you wanna be in life and have no clue whatmajor you want to sign up for...by all means, study something you LIKE. it can be asian studies, history, whatever! just get good grades!

i think everyone else covered the basics

I write this in every college thread. Work hard, but don't make school work your life. I was a straight B/C student and I got offers for plenty of jobsafter I graduated...why? Internships and extra-curricular activities. Real talk. No one ever asked for my GPA after I graduated. I never killed myselfover-studying like some people now I'm better off because I invested in my future on my own time.

Whether it be doing college radio (which I did), TV, greek life, student government, athletics (which I did), school newspaper, clubs within your major -it's all good. Use your Summers to get REAL LIFE experience and build a resume up. You will thank yourself after you graduate.

In terms of the laptop question - my school 'required' one, but I didn't use it all that much for actual in-class work. I found it more of adistraction than just taking normal notes with a notepad....75% of people with laptops in class/lecture halls are browsing facebook and playing solitaireregardless. So, in essence, I could have easily just used a desktop.

Honestly, I think, aside from the reason you're there (the privilege of higher education), a social life can make or break a person. I've seen peoplewho were absolutely miserable because they'd go to class, come back, sleep, eat and watch TV as an every day routine. These are the kids that get thefreshman 15, feel like outcasts and wind up getting depressed and/or not happy with themselves or their college experience. It's the kids who were active, whether it be athletically, school-wise, or just socially that were generally the most satisfied.

You have a boatload of kids in the same position as you, so PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE.

Nice. this is all extremely helpful. Can't wait to start college on the opposite side of the country

DONT GO IN WITH A GF
Meet as many people as you can and have a diverse group of friends

What are the pros and cons of having a later class versus a class in the morning? I take Calc 1 at 5:00 p.m. and I'm thinking that its going to suckbecause of the time

At my school, I tried to avoid any class in that 5-8 range. That's great social time to grab dinner with people and talk about your days andwhat everyone is up to, and maybe make plans for the night. If you're in class during that time...you're missing out.

The pro is obviously that you can get work done for that class the day of, but that encourages procrastination and laziness.

I remember that in some thread somewhere an NTer had mentioned getting a loan specifically for getting a laptop. Anyone remember the thread? I've triedcontacting the financial aid office and they were either swamped or just didnt like me because they were no help.
