I’m not black, but I think the “he’s invited to the cookout” needs to be retired. Those are the famous last words right before those invitees come out as a Trump supporters.

I went to a 75% rich white high school; it was a huge culture shock for me being in that environment since I came from a middle school where the white population was probably 5-10% at most.

When I was trying out for different sports , there were white players wearing FUBU, Rocawear, Sean John, etc. and religiously listened to hip hop in the weight room, so I thought “ok it’s not that bad here, they’re just like the kids I went to school with before.” But it turns out they basically refused to kick it with any black people/minorities outside of certain star player teammates or unless the minority was beyond white washed.

They never outright said anything racist, but you could just tell by the way they looked and talked to non white kids in that condescending “what are they even doing here/why are they even talking to me…” type of way.

This was a lesson I learned as a kid back in 2003; I think a lot of people don’t have that experience of growing up with people like that, so they don’t doubt pre Taylor Swift Travis Kelce or Jaxson Dart doing some slightly coordinated dances, celebrating with black teammates, or having a black girlfriend. None of that means anything when it comes to how they really feel inside. To them it’s just fun and games, not culture

Let me guess, you got forced by your parents to go to a private Bay Area Catholic prep school to straighten you out?

My parents sent me there because even though I got good grades, I used to get into trouble often and they thought I’d have bad influences at my local school. In reality I got exposed to a lot more racism, classism, hard drugs, and widespread theft by rich white kids when I went to that private school. I remember a bunch of football and basketball players got expelled for stealing laptops and selling coke, but somehow they came back after a year. I wonder how…

In a way, it was a good learning experience, because I lived a sheltered life most of my childhood, thinking that those types of people were rare and would disappear with our generation.

Just like you, I only kept in touch with maybe a couple of people after I graduated I actually ended up going to a university that had the same problem, but luckily I ended up befriending a bunch of people on the “Multicultural Floor” in my dorm building, so I pretty much lived in my own bubble most of the time. Still had to deal with drunk racist frat boys/former athletes every weekend though…
