good assumption. that would be like Christmas all over again if we went 7-9

finally have a quarterback with a good offensive coordinator, defense has made improvements, hopefully both lines can step up.

if we took second in the division id be thrilled, hell lets shoot for first.

beating SD this decade would be nice as well

i always get geeked up before the season only to be let down time and time again, so hopefully things will change.

Alright boys, here's the official word:

10-6, Wild Card berth and we'll make the second round of the playoffs.

McFadden is going to break 1,000 yards now that he's gotten over the hump and it's just him and Bush carrying.

Jason Campbell does an efficient job at QB, finishing with 22 TD's and 13 TO's. Offense hovers around 15th best in the league, just average.

Defense is top 10 in the league and McClain grabs DROY.

Both Heyward-Bey and Chaz Schillens lead the wide out corps and have strong, impressive seasons.

Special teams returning will be our Achilles' heel.

The front line saves Campbell from sacks that they would have allowed were Russell still with us.

Anything I wrote sound bad/crazy?

I agree w/ everything except the fact that ST will be our Achilles heal because we drafted Jacoby Ford and IMO he will have no other duties other than PR & KR so he should shine... the guy has ELITE WHEELS, even compared to our WR's & CB's.

Y'all check out the Madden ratings this year?? I think they did a pretty good job with the Raiders...should've gave my boy Asomugha a better rating...more specifically at tackling, y'all know that boy attacks and tackles better than most DB's.

[h2]The Shutdown Corner Interview: Louis Murphy (Part 1)[/h2]
By Doug Farrar

If you're looking for an interesting sleeper team this year, you may be surprised at what the Oakland Raiders could accomplish in 2010. Yes, the Raiders. No, I'm not kidding. Though the franchise has been quite the punch line in the past few seasons, recent additions to a strong front seven, a very solid 2010 draft, the acquisition of quarterback Jason Campbell(notes), and a weak AFC West could combine to give Raiders faithful something to cheer about for the first time in years.

And if you're looking for a sleeper player in either fantasy or reality football, second-year receiver Louis Murphy(notes) is one to watch. The fourth-round pick out of Florida started his rookie season strong, wasn't targeted as much in midseason, but stepped up near the end, especially in a 27-24 upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 13, when he caught four passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

He finished that rookie season with 34 catches for 521 yards and four touchdowns, but it's a good bet you'll see those numbers increasing in 2010.

In Part 1 of an exclusive interview with Shutdown Corner, Murphy talks about his NFL beginnings, being under the radar, how the Raiders came calling, and the anatomy of his first big professional play.

Shutdown Corner: You were an under-the-radar guy going back to your days at Florida, where there wasonly so much media attention and most of it was going to Tim Tebow(notes) and Percy Harvin(notes). Do you feel you got a fair shake from NFL teams when it came time to assess your abilities?

Louis Murphy: Yeah. I mean, I'm the type of person where I really don't look back on stuff and regret anything [or] look back at stuff and make excuses. I don't want to make excuses about my draft status or whatnot, but I do kind of feel that I was overlooked by teams. Just because playing under the limelight of Percy [Harvin] and [Tim] Tebow, but you know, it is what it is, so can't complain.

He's [Tebow] always handled it pretty good. He's always stayed humble through the process, and I know it's just a lot of pressure put upon him, and I just pray that he handles it, which I know he will. I know he'll handle the pressure fine. Just a lot of media surrounding him, and especially being a rookie, it's tough with that pressure on your back. So I think he'll be fine, and I just pray the best for him. We play him twice a year, so those are the only two times I won't be praying for him (laughs).

SC: Were you surprised that the Raiders drafted you after their first-round pick of Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes)?

LM: I didn't even think the Raiders were looking at me. I didn't take a visit to them ... I visited with them at the Combine, but I didn't actually go to Oakland to visit. I was really shocked when they took me after they took Heyward-Bey. I thought, I had a list, and I crossed the Raiders off, I was like, ‘Oh, they got a receiver, so I know I won't be going there'. So when they picked me up in the fourth round, it was just, it was shocking, you know, but we have a chance to be two young receivers and grow together in the game as a receiving duo, so I'm glad that I'm with the Raiders.

SC: Talk about your relationship with receivers coach Sanjay Lal - word is, you guys really hit it off in a pre-draft ccouting combine conversation.

LM: Yeah, I talked to Sanjay at the combine for awhile. We had talked. I thought they had their receiver who they wanted, so I was just looking for another team. I thought I was going to the Patriots, and the Raiders traded up, traded to that pick. I saw the area code when they called, and I thought, ‘I think I'm going to Cali', so it kind of all happened fast. The Patriots were really interested. Coach Belichick knows [Florida] Coach [Urban] Meyer, and asked a lot about me. I talked with them on the phone. So pretty much when the Patriots came up in the fourth round, I thought that's where I might be going."

Me and Sanjay's relationship is going along well. He's a good receivers coach. He's really detailed. He's taken my game to the next level. He really focuses on the little things. He's got the natural ability to speak and let it go, but he really focuses on my details. How good are my routes coming out in and out of my breaks. I thought I had it all, you know, just like every rookie. When it really broke down on film, coming in and out of breaks at the top of the route is pretty much the difference between a good receiver and a great receiver. Being able to run a route and beat a DB at the top of your route, so we've been focusing on that a lot. We're focusing on burst after the catch, trying to score on every play. So he's really on me about that, and I'm thankful to have him as a receivers coach. He's really laid-back, but he's a stickler for a lot of the little things, a lot of the fundamentals to the game where sometimes a player could take it out of their repertoire and just go off their natural ability.

That's what I thought it was going to be, but it's actually a balanced offense. Especially with [new quarterbacks coach] Hue Jackson coming in, we had a lot of new different plays, a lot of new different things. We're actually using the entire route tree, not just running go routes. So we have a lot of things that's going to change up, too, in our routes that are going to help us with the deep ball, so I really think it's going to be a great year this year. Especially with the roster we have, and I think it's really going to give me a chance to get open, so I'm excited.

SC:
What has working with [new offensive coordinator Hue] Jackson been like?

LM: Oh man, it's been great. There's an intensity to practice there that's pretty great. Always on high adrenaline, always challenging the defense to make us better, and for us to make them better. It's a totally different vibe with Hue than last year. He's really a great coach. All the good things you've heard about him are pretty much true. He changes up a lot with the line and the running backs and using different guys at different positions, so I think he's going to cause some more problems for defenses this year."

SC: You caught a huge fourth-down touchdown pass on a blown coverage against the Chargers in Week 1 that gave the Raiders the lead. What was going through your head when you realized you were going to be so wide open?

(Note: You can see the play detailed here.)

LM: We had gone through that play over and over in practice. [Coach Lal] told me that this was going to be a play that was really going to work against the Chargers because of the coverage they play. But I didn't think it was going to work like that (laughs). When I came to the line, [cornerback Antonio Cromartie(notes) was standing in front of me, and I saw him backing up. He was at about 12 to 13 yards, and my first break was at 14 yards. So when I took the break, I figured he'd keep covering me. It was quarters coverage, and I saw the safety cheating down. Cromartie jumped the out route, because we had been running out routes at about 14 yards, So, when I broke, I thought that there was no way the safety could come up and then drop all the way back. So, when I saw that out of quarters coverage, I knew that it was going to be a touchdown.

What are your expectations of rolando mcclain in 2010?

I hope that he BALLS this season, we need a MLB who is a real play maker.

As far as McClain goes hes def what we need. Other than Nnam we havent had a real QB of the D in I dont know how long. The kid came in acting like he owned this team already. Coaches and teammates responded to that right away, not only a breath of fresh air for the team but for fans as well. I think this kid could end up being not only the face of the D, but of the franchise as a whole. We have alot of steps to take but with this kid leading us im looking forward to the future. He understands the raider tradition, he understands winning, and he def understands working to achieve that goal and not just expecting it to come. Man cant wait for the season.

The Shutdown Corner Interview: Louis Murphy (Part 2)

By Doug Farrar

If you're looking for an interesting sleeper team this year, you may be surprised at what the Oakland Raiders accomplish in 2010. Yes, the Raiders. No, I'm not kidding. Though the franchise has been quite the punchline in recent seasons, recent additions to a strong front seven, a very solid 2010 draft, the addition of quarterback Jason Campbell(notes), and a weak AFC West could combine to give Raiders faithful something to cheer about for the first time in years.

And if you're looking for a sleeper player in either fantasy or reality football, second-year receiver Louis Murphy(notes) is one to watch. He finished that rookie year with 34 catches for 521 yards and four touchdowns, but it's a good bet you'll see those numbers increasing in 2010.

In Part 2 of an exclusive interview with Shutdown Corner, Murphy discusses Oakland's new quarterback situation, the hopes he has for his team, and just how good Nnamdi Asomugha(notes) really is.

Shutdown Corner: You started the regular season off hot after a good preseason, then you started to see fewer targets despite the fact that when you were targeted more, you were generally very effective. Was the decrease in targets explained to you? And do you think you'll be featured more in 2010?

Louis Murphy: It was explained to me that I was getting a lot of double coverages, a lot of rolling coverages to my side. So that was pretty much a lot where the targets went, I had to get other players open. I think I'm going to be featured more in 2010. They're looking for me to be the big-time receiver, and for me to step up and be that guy. I think I'm going to have a very intricate role in this season, this playoff run we're going to try to take. I just think the sky's the limit.

SC: Were you surprised that you were getting that kind of focus so soon?

LM: It was surprising. Even in college, defenses pretty much just play their coverage, defensive coordinators just run their defense that works for them. Really don't try to-especially with Percy playing the slot-you never really got a coverage for a slot receiver where you could just focus on the slot versus man coverage. So being in the NFL, there was a lot of talk about how if a player starts to get hot, they'll try to cloud coverage you or shadow coverage you. When I started doing well, and it started happening, I thought, ‘Wow, they really do this,' because I wasn't a believer in all that - they didn't do it in college. But when it started happening, it was just frustrating because I went a game without even a catch and I thought, ‘Man, if you do what you're doing hot, they try to take it away from you right away'.

SC: Was there a different game plan going into the Pittsburgh game? You wound up as the first Raiders receiver to go over 100 yards in a single game in 33 games, which is a pretty impressive stat. Not only did you catch two touchdowns, but there was that great sideline catch on the prayer thrown by Bruce Gradkowski(notes).

LM: That's pretty much how it happened. Got into a rhythm, and it happened. We didn't gameplan it, because I don't think I even had a catch until the fourth quarter, so it really wasn't like I was game-planned -- ‘We're going to target you this game'. It was just that--the one play where I scored a 75-yard touchdown, at practice, they said that this was going to be a big play-similar to the Chargers game-this is going to be a play that's going to work. And when I ran and saw the coverage, same thing. They were blitzing, bringing an all-out blitz. It's just me and [cornerback Ike] Taylor out there, and I pretty much did the same thing. Sold the out, broke to the middle, Bruce threw a great ball and after that, it just started rolling."

SC: Not to pile on JaMarcus Russell(notes), but what were the differences between Russell
and Gradkowski, and what has it been like working with Jason Campbell?

LM: I don't want to get into the JaMarcus thing, but they're different personalities -- different guys. I felt comfortable with both of them; I just felt that if we went out there and executed the game plan like the coaches put it in, we'd have a chance no matter who was out there [at quarterback]. Playing with Jason Campbell has been a lift to the entire team. He's a leader who commands the huddle, and he's been through a few offenses, which is good because our offense is similar to ones he's run. You [watch] him in meetings and he works really hard, and everyone's working hard for him. I really feel that we're going to shock a lot of teams this year.

SC: For the first time in years, the Raiders' draft was almost universally praised. Is there a different feel around the complex this year, maybe a thought that you guys could catch a few breaks and be in the playoff hunt in what looks like a weak division?

LM: We don't set the schedule, but I think we have a buzz going around the locker room. Everybody's really upbeat, and really excited about the season. I feel that we could make the playoffs this year. With the team we had last season, we had some games we just let slip by, and some where we never even showed up. In other games, we played very well against some really good teams. With Jason coming in, and coach [Hue] Jackson coming in, I think we have a better chance. I think we're going to get our respect early in the season, and teams will take us seriously.

SC: What does it do to your game to go up against [elite cornerback] Nnamdi Asomugha in practice all the time?

LM: Everybody's wrong, man ... he's not even good (laughs). No, it's an honor to go against one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL every day in practice. He makes my game go up another level, because I'll talk with him after pretty much every play - what he saw, what I could have done better in my routes ... if he jumps a route and knocks the ball down, what did I do that he saw that I could do better? Just talking with him all the time, and going up against that kind of competitiveness - a Pro Bowl cornerback - when you get into the game, you're almost always playing against - I won't say a lesser corner, but he's just that good. He studies very hard and works all the time. A lot of the coverages in the NFL that I saw last year, I was already ready for them. He talks to me about what defenses we're going against that week, and it helps me out a lot. When you go against Nnamdi every day, you're not as intimidated when you see Champ [Bailey] or [Darrelle] Revis up against you. I've caught balls on Nnamdi, and that just boosts my confidence.

SC: What is Al Davis like?

LM: Sharp as a tack. Very sharp mentally. He knows pretty much every player that's coming into the draft, every player in the NFL ... talking to him is almost like talking to a God of football - he knows pretty much everything. He knows everyone - looks can be deceiving, because he's on top of everything. I love talking to him - I talk to him often. He knows so much football, it's mind-blowing. If you ask him about anyone, any player, he's going to know something or someone that has to do with that person.

My homeboy married into a 49ers family and they converted him into one. Not that there's anything wrong with that but come on!

I honestly feel very very good about this season coming up.
