PUREFOODS HANDS STA. LUCIA FIRST LOSS
Yaps, Raymundo sparkle for Giants who blew a 20-point lead but still escaped with win in the tournament to just three wins and put it in a tie with idle Barangay Ginebra and Red Bull in second place behind Talk 'N Text's 4-1 slate.
This game showed the character of this team, said Giants coach Ryan Gregorio, whose charges lost a 60-40 third quarter lead in the face of a gritty comeback by the Realtors.
Even though we lost a big lead, we did not lose heart, Gregorio added.
The Giants' poise was tested to the fullest after the Realtors even erected a 96-93 lead in the final 35 seconds of the game which was watched by a sellout crowd led by La Union Governor Victor Ortega and San Fernando Mayor Mary Jane Ortega.
But the Giants brilliantly came through with reigning league MVP James Yap showing he has fully recovered from a recent bout with flu by capping a game-high 22-point performance with three charities inside the last 28 seconds.
Peter June Simon and Marc Pingris also came through with free throws, two by the peppery guard which pushed the Giants ahead to stay at 97-96 and the forward's pair making it a three-point game, with 9.3 ticks left.
Kenneth Duremdes was hastily fielded for SLR's prayer for a tying triple, but his attempt from the right corner bounced out.
Purefoods came into the game as the heavy underdog and rightfully so after losing its last game to Coca-Cola and the different mind-sets of its players.
Noy Castillo stayed back home to tend to his pregnant wife, Jun Limpot's father has just been taken out of the intensive care unit in a hospital in Manila, Roger Yap was still mourning the recent death of his father and Kerby Raymundo's wife recently had a miscarriage.
To top it all off, the team's bus broke down on their way here from Manila, stranding the team for more than two hours in Pangasinan Friday evening. That caused Gregorio to cancel the team practice and Saturday morning's shootaround.
The entire team members spent the hours before the game viewing tapes of their opponent and lazing around their hotel.
We did not think about the negative things. All we thought about were good, positive thoughts, related Gregorio.
The rest seemed to have done the Giants a world of good as they repeatedly sprang traps and pressures that harassed the Realtors no end in the first half.
As a result, the Realtors were visibly taken out of their rhythm, missing 10 of their first 12 shots from the field and getting outhustled and outrebounded.
In no time, the likes of James and Roger Yap and Raymundo, who had 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, led their team to leads of 28-17 after the first quarter and 57-40 at the half.
The difference ballooned to 20 points on Raymundo's three-point play opening the third period, but that proved to be one shaky lead indeed in the face of what came next.
Paolo Mendoza hit four triples and Nelbert Omolon scattered nine points in a massive 30-6 attack, giving the Realtors a 70-66 lead.
It was not long, however, before the Giants regained their composure.

Coming out of the rut the last time, San Miguel Beer is now on the run.
The Beermen notched a second straight win in the 2006-07 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup as they recovered from a fourth-quarter meltdown and bucked the early exit of key players on fouls, beating the never-say-die Barangay Ginebra Kings, 101-97, in overtime at the Cuneta Astrodome Sunday.
A sellout crowd of over 11,000 witnessed a classic game that saw San Miguel squander a 20-point spread on a fierce Ginebra chase but live on in the extra period to score a follow-up on its 81-71 thumping of Alaska only two days ago.
"Coming to the game, I told the boys we didnt have much time to prepare for Ginebra. Kung tatalunin natin sila, its not about our skills or anything but attitude," said San Miguel coach Chot Reyes.
"Today we saw a good example of what can get if we come together. We lost big men on fouls but we didnt panic," added Reyes." I told them were used to doing this in practice because of injuries. That settled down the boys."
The Beermen got a big jolt in regulation play when the Kings staged a daring rally at endgame capped by a long twinner by Mark Macapagal that sent the game into overtime.
San Miguel had a chance to finish off Ginebra in regulation, but a split from the foul line by rookie LA Tenorio paved the way for the Kings setting up Macapagal for that game-tying shot with the clock ticking to its final seconds.
"Yung ibang players kala talo na nung na-shoot ni Macapagal. But in the end, its a very satisfying victory," said Reyes as they snared the win that drew them level with Welcoat, Coca-Cola, Purefoods and Air21 at fifth place.
The Kings slid to solo fourth on a second straight loss following three successive victories.
For the second straight game, the comebacking Danny Seigle emerged the Beermens biggest hero as the 6-foot-6 Fil-Am deadshot erupted for 28 points, including eight of the teams 15 in the extension play.
Seigle also hauled down 17 rebounds, improving by two his previous career-best likewise done versus Ginebra.
The Kings, on the other hand, pooled their resources together as they kept on coming back at the finish, refusing to yield the game handily.
Macapagal had a booming three-pointer as the Kings threatened for the last time at 97-99 with 7.5 seconds left.
But what Tenorio failed to deliver in regulation play he did in the closing seconds of overtime, sinking two charities to eventually clinch the win for the Beermen.
The Beermen blew a 20-point lead early in the third period with Dorian Pena, Romel Adducul, Willy Wilson and Dondon Hontiveros fouling out one after another.
But Seigle wouldnt foul up everything for the Beermen. He rattled in eight straight points that gave San Miguel a 97-91 cushion in the extension play.

Saturday's victory, says Purefoods Chunkee coach Ryan Gregorio, was a testament to his team's resiliency.
He even hinted their 100-96 come-from-behind victory against the previously unbeaten Sta. Lucia Realtors is the kind of break they need to get things going.
"This only showed the character of the team. We might have lost a huge lead but we managed to hang tough and find a way to come out a winner," said the outspoken Gregorio, who praised his stars led by Jun Limpot for their ability to put their personal problems behind.
"We did not think about the negative things. All we thought about were good, positive thoughts," Gregorio said.
Gregorio said their state of mind remains the same when they meet the powerhouse Talk N Text Phone Pals Wednesday afternoon. Game time is set at 4:35 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Purefoods Chunkee mentor admits the leading Phone Pals present a lot of problems because the team is loaded with big men who can shoot.
"It will be tough. But we're ready for the challenge. After all, we are the defending champions," Gregorio said.
This is precisely the reason TNT coach Derick Pumaren isnt taking the Giants lightly, even if they easily defeated Purefoods 108-99 in both teams' conference debuts last October 4.
In fact, he keeps telling his troops never to take any of their opponents for granted. And from the looks of it, the Phone Pals have learned their lessons after absorbing a stunning 110-127 blowout loss at the hands of the Air21 Express a week ago.
They bounced back from the humiliation by beating the upset-conscious Coca-Cola Tigers, 78-71, last Friday.
In the 7:20 p.m. nightcap, the Sta. Lucia Realtors try to recover from Saturday's loss when they face the Red Bull Barakos.
Both the Barakos and the Realtors are tied at second spot with 3-1 record.
If Sta. Lucia is still smarting from its endgame collapse against the Giants in San Fernando, La Union, Red Bull is coming off an inspiring 84-78 victory over Barangay Ginebra a week ago. The Barakos, however, will troop to the floor with one weapon less in their arsenal as they play their first game without deadshot Lordy Tugade, who spent his first six years as a pro with the ballclub but was traded to San Miguel Beer in a surprise three-team deal last week.
Wednesdays doubleheader can shake up the leaderboard. A TNT loss in the first game will give the second game winner solo leadership in the 10-team field.

For a brief while, the Giants seemed to have the game won after James Yap, the reigning MVP, knocked in a 3-pointer for an 88-85 lead. But Harvey Carey sank two free throws and Mark Cardona added one to forge the second overtime.

The Sta. Lucia Realtors returned to the metropolis with fire in their eyes coming off a bitter loss on the road, blasting the Red Bull Barakos, 105-83, Wednesday in the Talk N Text-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Stopped on their tracks by the Purefoods Chunkee Giants last Saturday in San Fernando City, La Union, the Realtors plunged back into action like mad men, totally outclassing the Barakos to find themselves the surprise league leaders four weeks into the season. Sta. Lucia, with a 4-1 win-loss record, seized leadership as Purefoods Chunkee whipped erstwhile front-runner Talk N Text, 109-103, in triple-overtime earlier in the day.
The Phone Pals slid to second with a 4-2 card and the Barakos fell to third with a 3-2 slate.
"Na-inspire kami sa panalo ng Purefoods. Sabi ko sa mga bata this is now our chance to regain the lead," said Sta. Lucia coach Alfrancis Chua.
"We lost a close game to Purefoods which is the reigning champion in this tournament. Sabi ko rin, runner-up lang ang Red Bull kaya kaya natin iyan," Chua added.

The Sta. Lucia Realtors returned to the metropolis with fire in their eyes coming off a bitter loss on the road, blasting the Red Bull Barakos, 105-83, Wednesday in the Talk N Text-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Stopped on their tracks by the Purefoods Chunkee Giants last Saturday in San Fernando City, La Union, the Realtors plunged back into action like mad men, totally outclassing the Barakos to find themselves the surprise league leaders four weeks into the season. Sta. Lucia, with a 4-1 win-loss record, seized leadership as Purefoods Chunkee whipped erstwhile front-runner Talk N Text, 109-103, in triple-overtime earlier in the day.
The Phone Pals slid to second with a 4-2 card and the Barakos fell to third with a 3-2 slate.
"Na-inspire kami sa panalo ng Purefoods. Sabi ko sa mga bata this is now our chance to regain the lead," said Sta. Lucia coach Alfrancis Chua.
"We lost a close game to Purefoods which is the reigning champion in this tournament. Sabi ko rin, runner-up lang ang Red Bull kaya kaya natin iyan," Chua added.

Barangay Ginebra isnt done tinkering with its rosternot just yet.
The Kings added another gem to its already star-studded roster by acquiring electrifying guard Ronald Tubid from the Air 21 Express Monday in a trade that should benefit the Kings' campaign this season.
In exchange, the Express acquired the Kings' 2007 and 2008 second round draft picks as well as Ginebra's 2009 first round draft pick.
The trade that reportedly has been silently in the works for some time was consummated two days after the Express picked up their fourth defeat in six games a 102-118 loss to the San Miguel Beermen on Saturday.
Ginebra team manager Allan Caidic said Tubid's energy and never-say-die spirit are perfect for the Kings.
"We believe he will be very good backup for Mark (Caguioa). We think balanced na kami ngayon. Meron na kaming stability sa backcourt and at the same time flexibility," Caidic said.
Air 21 coach Bo Perasol admitted he is saddened by the lost of his energetic guard but did elaborate on the trade.
"May mga pagkakataon that we needed energy and Ronald readily provided us electricity with his mere presence," Perasol said.
But with 11 players left in his roster, Perasol said he is now more comfortable rotating his players.
"Mas magiging OK ang rotation nila Gary (David) and Leo (Avenido) ngayon. We can also experiment playing KG (Canaleta) and Arwind (Santos) at the same time," he added.
Tubid averaged 11 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals in six games with the Express this season.

The 6-foot-5 workhorse of the Realtors, who can play the 2-3-4-5 positions, is one of the big reasons for Sta. Lucias currently being at the top of the team standings of the Talk N Text-PBA Philippine Cup with their 5-1 slate and typifies the new-found vigor and athleticism of the SLR franchise.
Williams, whose mother -- the former Andrea Castro is from Cebu, is leading his team in scoring and rebounding with his 15.0 ppg and 11.8 rpg averages, one of only two players in the league to do so, the other being Talk N Text Asi Taulava, whose 17.9 ppg and 12.4 rpg norms are best at the Phone Pals camp.
A product of Oakland University, Williams is the only rookie averaging in double figures in rebounding and is ranked third overall behind the 13.3rpg of Barangay Ginebras Rudy Hatfield and Taulava. He is also one of only seven players currently averaging a double-double and his 1.2 shotblocks per game is tied for sixth overall in the conference.
Williams made the loudest noise in the Realtors' last three games, two of which they've won against league giants Red Bull and Talk `N Text. He capped the team's 102-90 rout of the Phone Pals in San Fernando, Pampanga last week with a career-high 25 points and a solid 11-rebound performance.
No other previous No. 1 pick in recent years is creating such a big ripple since Marlou Aquino, ironically a teammate of Williams now at Sta. Lucia. Aquino created a huge impact during his rookie year with Ginebra in 1996 and was rewarded with Rookie of the Year honors at seasons end.
Ginebra recorded a franchise-worst 5-25 win-loss record in 1995 but went 35-29 an astounding 30-win turnaround -- when the 6-foot-9 center arrived the following season, capping it with a runner-up finish to Alaska in the 1996 Governors Cup.
The 6-foot-9 Aquino averaged 9.0 rebounds and 2.8 block shots both bests among locals and a third-best 17.9 points per game in his freshman season.

PBA mulls 14-team expansion in 2 years

The Philippine Basketball Association could well expand to a 14-team league in the next two to three years, a prospect that would further enhance its status as the No. 1 sports-entertainment business in the country.
This was divulged by PBA commissioner Noli Eala who said expansion program is among the priority topics to be discussed by the league board of governors in a two-day, live-in conference abroad in December.
"The board is looking into expanding and its very possible that the league will have 14 member ball clubs by 2010," Eala told The STAR.
"Were already talking with two applicants but I cant divulge their identities yet," Eala added.
Sources, however, identified Harbour Centre as one of those parties with serious thoughts in joining the pro league in the near future.
A giant bank corporation and a petroleum company have also reportedly inquired details for membership application in the league.
Harbour Centre had tried to make a deal with Shell for a franchise takeover. They failed to reach an agreement, though, prompting Shell to instead offer its franchise to Welcoat.
The PBA board feels the current business climate provides the league a good opportunity to expand thats why they calendared the matter for discussion in their December confab.
The PBA coliseum, PBA Entertainment and other income-generating programs are other things up for discussion in the meeting.
The league has set the launching of PBA Entertainment on Nov. 25. Its a separate TV program with its own timeslot, co-produced by the league, to complement the PBA games.
The launching was originally scheduled Nov. 18 but was moved a week later to give way to the Manny Pacquiao-Eric Morales rubber match.
It will be remembered that the PBA board also held his annual general board meeting abroad earlier this year.
The governors, the commissioner and his staff met in Macau for three days.

PBA ARENA GROUNDBREAKING IN MID-2007
3 QC sites eyed for state-of-the-art venueed sooner than later.
The breakthrough deal transpired following informal talks between the two PBA bigwigs and representatives of the Quezon City government led by Mayor Sonny Belmonte.
Eala said three sites in the heart of Quezon City have been identified. One is located near the boundary of Agham Road and Quezon Avenue, the other is a prime lot near the North Triangle Development Area beside SM City North EDSA, and the last one is currently housing the Manila Seedling Bank at the corner of EDSA and Quezon Avenue.
"We'll be talking to the individual owners of the potential sites for lease arrangements next week," said PBA commissioner Noli Eala after his meeting with Belmonte that was arranged by City Councilor Franz Pumaren.
The PBA commissioner said two of the sites are National Housing Authority properties while the third is controlled by the Ayala Group.
Also with Eala and Vargas, whose company Philippine Long Distance Telephone could be one of the major investors in the multi-million venture, in the meeting that has the go-signal of the Board, was league legal counsel Melvin Mendoza.
"The Mayor was very enthusiastic with our desire to build a permanent venue in his city," the commissioner said.
With the PBA Board throwing its full support to the project, Eala hopes to furnish the league's Governors a comprehensive report on three crucial aspects of the undertaking by December, namely: site selection, financing proposal, and the business model and management terms.
"It's looking more realistic every moment," said Eala of the long-time vision which took vague form as early as the tenure of Commissioner Rudy Salud in the late '80s.
With a reported P4B surplus in its coffers, Quezon City appeared in strong position to enter into a joint venture with the PBA, primarily through PLDT, San Miguel Corporation and, possibly, real estate developer Sta. Lucia Realty, in the ambitious project.
"The Mayor envisions a civic center with the PBA coliseum there," Eala bared.
During the meeting, Belmonte presented the visiting PBA officials with a blueprint for the Quezon City Central Business District detailing the development plan for the QC North Triangle District.
If plans proceed smoothly, Eala said site selection could be finalized by January next year. Negotiations with banks and financers could follow by March and April, with a groundbreaking ceremony set by July.
"The PBA is debt-free," said Eala. "I don't know of any commercial bank that would not be happy to get into any business arrangements with us, like a debt-and-equity setup. We could put up, say, 20 percent of the cost, and the banks would shoulder the rest as loans.

"We'll be talking to the individual owners of the potential sites for lease arrangements next week," said PBA commissioner Noli Eala after his meeting with Belmonte that was arranged by City Councilor Franz Pumaren.
The PBA commissioner said two of the sites are National Housing Authority properties while the third is controlled by the Ayala Group.
Also with Eala and Vargas, whose company Philippine Long Distance Telephone could be one of the major investors in the multi-million venture, in the meeting that has the go-signal of the Board, was league legal counsel Melvin Mendoza.
"The Mayor was very enthusiastic with our desire to build a permanent venue in his city," the commissioner said.
With the PBA Board throwing its full support to the project, Eala hopes to furnish the league's Governors a comprehensive report on three crucial aspects of the undertaking by December, namely: site selection, financing proposal, and the business model and management terms.
"It's looking more realistic every moment," said Eala of the long-time vision which took vague form as early as the tenure of Commissioner Rudy Salud in the late '80s.
With a reported P4B surplus in its coffers, Quezon City appeared in strong position to enter into a joint venture with the PBA, primarily through PLDT, San Miguel Corporation and, possibly, real estate developer Sta. Lucia Realty, in the ambitious project.
"The Mayor envisions a civic center with the PBA coliseum there," Eala bared.
During the meeting, Belmonte presented the visiting PBA officials with a blueprint for the Quezon City Central Business District detailing the development plan for the QC North Triangle District.
If plans proceed smoothly, Eala said site selection could be finalized by January next year. Negotiations with banks and financers could follow by March and April, with a groundbreaking ceremony set by July.
"The PBA is debt-free," said Eala. "I don't know of any commercial bank that would not be happy to get into any business arrangements with us, like a debt-and-equity setup. We could put up, say, 20 percent of the cost, and the banks would shoulder the rest as loans.

Kelly Williams pointed the way and the rest of the Realtors were all too eager to oblige as they repeated over Alaska 101-98 Friday night to regain solo leadership in the Talk N Text-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Hindi na hilo si Kelly, said Realtors coach Alfrancis Chua after the young man they made this years No. 1 rookie pick notched a game-high 24 points on top of 12 rebounds and four steals.
Williams was limited by jet lag to just eight points in a 73-92 loss to Red Bull only last Wednesday but was his usual energetic self this time in leading a balanced SLR attack that spelled doom for the gritty Aces.
Norman Gonzales, Alex Cabagnot and Dennis Espino each added at least 12 points for the Realtors, who almost squandered a 13-point fourth quarter lead but had enough poise left to escape with their seventh win in nine games, half a game ahead of Red Bull which is taking on
Air21 in Legazpi City Saturday.
Nic Belasco led Alaska with 20 points and 14 rebounds for his conference-leading sixth double-double while four other Aces scored in double figures but they still failed to follow up on their 122-100 win over Air21 last Sunday and dropped to a tournament-worst 2-7 slate.

Seigle, who came into the game averaging 21.7 points, already had 16 at the half and was chiefly responsible in keeping SMBs head above water despite of the crowd favorites repeated surges.
The 6-foot-6 forward combined with Racela, Dorian Pena and Romel Adducul as they gave the Beermen a 22-17 lead after the first quarter that proved to be a luxury in what would turn out to be a very close contest.
Hatfield himself was no slouch, already notching a double-double with 11 points and as many rebounds in his first 17 minutes of action that kept Ginebra within 34-37 after 24 minutes.
