“There aren’t many things in life that I enjoy more than a few lines by the fireplace at the end of the day,” he writes, pointing out that the experience leaves him “refreshed” and “prepared to face another day.”

Hart, who studies the effects of psychoactive drugs on humans, finds his use of the narcotic to be “as rational as my alcohol use. Like vacation, sex and the arts, heroin is one of the tools that I use to maintain my work-life balance.”

wild.

He has a level of self discipline that I know I’ll never obtain. But seriously, good for him being able to handle it and still be on top of his professional and family obligations.

I did heroin when I was younger and I never ended up injecting or getting two crazy but now that I have a family and much more day to day connection with the community and professional obligations, I would not be able to work in the kind of drug use that Dr Hart is able to.

Some people just don’t get hooked on certain things. I’ve got years of alcohol abuse under my belt before I quit drinking. To this day I could rip a line or two of coke with you and call it good. It just doesn’t have that appeal like alcohol.

if I start drinking I’m blacking out, no if’s ands or buts.

I rock with Hart on reforming drug laws,

but

I can't wrap my head around recreational heron

I might read his book because I read a couple of profiles to make sure I was not influenced by the NY Post framing but can't rock with it his argument.

When I was prescribed perks after some foot surgery those joints had me zooted. Couldn't imagine what heroin would do to me.

I don’t know about H or coke but mdma is the most focused, alert and productive I have ever been at work. Could not sleep for 3 days after though eyes dry as **** never tried it again after that

Are you really so shell-shocked that you think I'm personally attacking you by echoing your point that the $15 minimum wage is popular and adding recent polling data to illustrate how, unlike its supporters aren't particularly shy about it? There is clear majority support for a $15 minimum wage. This is a good thing.

We just sat through an entire serial drama about how Rusty hates Black socialists because he objected to a White person who isn't you throwing a tantrum over a policy that isn't socialist, which we all ultimately want to see enacted.
Don't do this.

Good point, man.

I’ll be honest, I am sensitive at least with people who I think are friends and allies. Yeah, it does hurt when there’s a disagreement, that veers into or feels like it veers into it being personal, with folks who I think of as on the same team. I have trouble seeing things as either totally good or totally bad and I know it has caused a lot of strife on here and I’m sorry and trying to work on that because obviously the whole damn world is not a binary.

Left and/or progressive politics should always stay focused on what we care about rather than relatively small differences.

My boy bought a bag of heroin like 8 years ago. He just wanted to see what it was all about.

did it all and never touched it again.

About ten years ago, one of my best friends had surgery and was prescribed Oxy. He gave me, like, ten pills (I didn't ask for them, he just offered them). I took one...then flushed the rest down the toilet. No way, man.

if an uneducated dude with a less desirable career said, "There aren’t many things in life that I enjoy more than a few lines at the end of the day," would people still be as accepting? im ignorant to any of these drugs so excuse me if I'm being naive. what are mild withdrawal symptoms of heroin? it feels like this is looked at like hobby and not a bad habit because of who he is. that's a hell of a pass especially when you stark talking about having withdrawals.

yeah like I said I never liked opiates like that but I was in a car accident and once I found myself taking them for no reason I sold all my percs because I’m grimey like that.

I never liked the feeling but I’d still take them. Had to cut that out.

definately. My boy worked on wall street and smoked hella crack.

he didn’t get treated like a homeless guy who smokes crack.

Idk what heroin withdrawal is like but I know what 'mild' Tramadol withdrawal is like. This was while slowly tapering down.
With heroin you probably just dial all the following up a few notches. I can tell you there's absolutely nothing mild about 'mild' opioid withdrawals.

Runny nose
Electrified feeling constantly traveling through your body, like a shockwave going down from your arms to your feet over and over (this is easily the worst one by a mile, I'd rather throw up all day)
Headache
Tired
Vomit
Muscle spasms
Muscle cramps
Joint stiffness
Cold/hot feeling

Yes there’s hard drugs  cmon y’all. It’s not only about the high, the side effects are dialed up multiple times over

When I was prescribed Percs I gave my mom the pills. She was in charge of managing the dosage

I took it for a couple of days, then I told her to flush the rest, and buy me a bottle of Tylenol to ride it out

**** had time feeling like it was moving different. Like Tenet was a documentary of my Perky use.

Had me making my way to the bathroom to take a dookie like...

Heroin and opioids are some of the most addictive substances on earth. It’s almost a forgone conclusion that one would get addicted if he took it often.

Like some mentioned here, I’m a sucker for uppers. I never tried coke for that reason, I know what something like that would do to me. I know my personality too well. And that’s where the addiction really hits, it’s your personality and what type you will naturally gravitate too.

I was in the hospital on hella drugs and they had to give me some super strong laxative because they said if I didn’t drop a bumper soon it was going to throw one up instead of pooping it out.

I didn’t wanna throw up poop.

There’s definitely a class element at play, in terms of how the drug use is perceived by society at large. There’s also the aspect of available resources, control over your work schedule and the ability to take time off that play a role in ones ability to use drugs, handle addiction and avoid addiction in the first place

I will say that there is such thing as mild opiate withdrawal and if you can ignore it and it runs its course, you can use at a later date and you won’t be using a higher dose to get the same effect. The problem is that a lot of people aren’t willing to ride out even mild withdrawals so they use again and again and the dudes get higher and higher and then you’re addicted.

I can't stress enough just how awful opioid withdrawal is. That electrified feeling just by itself was worse than all the other withdrawal symptoms combined, easily. It drives you absolutely nuts every second of the day. The others are basically just a worse version of the flu but that one puts torture techniques to shame.

I don’t know and will never know. Bet on that

At 54, the married father of three has snorted small amounts of heroin for as many as 10 days in a row and enjoyed it mightily – even if, as he recalls in his new book “Drug Use for Grown-ups: Chasing Liberty in the Land of Fear” (Penguin Press), he’s experienced mild withdrawal symptoms “12 to 16 hours after the last dose.”

But, as Hart sees it, the discomfort is a worthwhile trade-off.

There aren’t many things in life that I enjoy more than a few lines by the fireplace at the end of the day,” he writes, pointing out that the experience leaves him “refreshed” and “prepared to face another day.”

Hart, who studies the effects of psychoactive drugs on humans, finds his use of the narcotic to be “as rational as my alcohol use. Like vacation, sex and the arts, heroin is one of the tools that I use to maintain my work-life balance.”

wild.
Makes this less concerning....

Hangover don’t got you picking off your face like meth lol. Work with high risk kids who’s parents used meth for a year or so. At 23 they looked like they were 50. Not an exaggeration. It’s crazy. Can never recover from that either

I get what you’re saying but a hard drinker can do just as much damage.

im not saying meth isn’t harmful I just don’t get why alcohol gets a pass. Drink a liter a day of whisky for a year and you’re going to be in bad shape as well.

addiction is addiction in my book.
