The chokehold that Catholicism has on people of that faith doesn't get talked about enough. The whole religion is built around guilt, shame and fear with nonsensical made up rules. Bow your head, do as you're told. The Evangelicals get called out all the time for their bat crap insane beliefs but Catholics are right there with them and seem to get a pass.

Don't eat meat on Fridays. Why? Don't worry about why, we're Catholic and we don't eat meat on Fridays. What happens if I eat meat on Friday? Oh I don't know but you better get in that box with that old man on Sunday and say you're sorry.

Any organization with that type of logic doesn't have a foot to stand on when it comes to body autonomy and medical science. It's time to grow up.

Our archbishop sent an email to all the schools yesterday saying they have to ditch Girl Scouts of America for some bootleg scout troop because they are "embracing and promoting an impoverished worldview regarding gender and sexuality." The thing went on and on, and was disgusting tbh.

Yeah we left the Catholic Church a couple years back… my wife and I (Latinos) grew up in the church but the older we got the more we realized their message didn’t align with our lives anymore. Occasionally we would catch the right service but for the most part it was always guilt trip and left us feeling really lousy. Didn’t help they kept pushing the pro-life agenda at every mass… finally we had enough.


I owe it a lot for how it shaped me as a young man but am glad we mad the decision to move on

Funny enough, so many Catholics I know feel the same way but keep going out of loyalty and tradition.

Trust me, I hate politics and am just going to support the lesser of the two evils.

But my parents are low-income 1st gen immigrants. The progressive policies in this country has helped so much, financially. They're on Section 8 housing, have monthly EBT, etc. And I grew up eating free lunch at schools, which Project 2025 is trying to eradicate. Financial aid paid for nearly 100% of my college tuition and my degree is the reason why I have my career. Conservatives don't want to help people like us.

And despite this, they vote for trump

Right now, I have it exactly as it was in 2020 (303-235). Just GA swapped with NC.

If there was a statewide election going on, I would likely have GA in Harris column too, but I think she falls short, but if it's a high participation state, she would likely get GA too.

I would say it depends on who the denomination of priests are. I attended Jesuit schools in HS and undergrad and they are totally different. Much more progressive and accepting. Since education is their number one priority they don’t talk down to people.

Now I personally grew away from religion way before I even started HS we I found it all BS and I hated the low level and low educated Polish priests who would scream at their congregation in my local parish. When we were required to attend monthly mass in HS and heard the first homily by one of our teachers, a PHD physicists talking about how some scientists relate the Big Bang with God I was like okay see I can get down with this. He’s not screaming at me and he’s talking to my level of thought and education. But it was a little too late. I still donate to the school yearly to help children attend who are smart but too poor to pay full tuition. I was in their shoes 20ish years ago.

But it’s also because of this approach of accepting everyone is why other priest denominations hate Jesuits.

I read up on the max penalties for this in Minnesota. Five years in jail, $10,000 fine for each charge. Throw the book at these people. I honestly don't care who anyone votes for, but precedent has to be set, and it goes both ways.

However, the irony of all this is that it's definitely happened god knows how many of times in the past, but Trump's tantrums have every state scrutinizing every vote, ballot drop box integrity, signatures, etc. The GOP is going to wish they never opened this Pandora's Box. Voters are tracking their ballots like never before. The GOP played themselves.

This is the plan the dems stole from the black panther party..... the only reason any assistance is given to anyone is to try and win votes. Don't believe me? Look what we pay in social services and look at what we give ukraine and Israel. They throw you crumbs and expect your backing forever. Your parents arnt stupid, they KNOW because one side appear more empathetic in the fall every 4 years doesn't mean they actually give a FF.

Again, we currently don't have a fit president and haven't for years... the machine keeps on keeping on though

I feel like there needs to be some nuance when it comes to Latinos/immigrants who support Republicans.

On paper, Republicans have a lot of rhetoric that appeals to immigrants and their families. Let’s say you ignore the open bigotry and focus on the following key words they keep pushing;

-Family values. Compared to the typical Americans, immigrants stick to their families much longer, often living with them until they get married (or continue to live with them in large households). Building a large family and having a bunch of kids is a traditional value for these people.

-limited government involvement in your day to day life. Many of our parents and ancestors are from countries that had brutal dictatorships.

-law and order. Who doesn’t want a safer community compared to the one many of our parents came from?

I can see how there are people who come from a different country might say “Trump is an @$&@:$:$ but I’m voting for the Republicans because of my values.”

Now, anyone who has a grasp of the English language and basic critical thinking can turn off right wing propoganda because we can see that Republicans never practice what they preach.

-Defund institutions that would provide proper healthcare and education to children
-Flood our streets with lethal weapons
-start decades long illegal wars
-heavily use government to restrict and oppress women/gay/transgender/minorities
-use government to leech off the middle class and the poor
-only deregulating things that allow them to line their pockets at the expense of the average person

I can keep listing hundreds of forms of hypocrisy.

I’m not saying this to justify anything. I’m just pointing out that I get how some immigrants who probably don’t pay attention to the news all day can tune into some right wing hijacked radio, hear someone in their own language talk about “Did you hear Democrats want to defund the police??” And then come to the conclusion that Republicans will keep them safe.

It’s our job to try to educate these people with concrete examples of the hypocrisy. Not with exaggerated and vulgar insults (which I’ve been guilty of in the past).

Now if they STILL don’t change their ways, or they were born in this country and don’t use the critical thinking we were all taught in elementary school, then there’s no point. Just cut ties and move on

Policy isn’t democracy
I know that Trump supporters may ask why we’re not writing a similar newsletter about the Democratic Party. And it’s true that liberals have violated democratic norms at times — with aggressive executive orders, for example, or attempts to stifle debate during the Covid pandemic. But Trump’s anti-democratic behavior is of a different order of magnitude. Pretending otherwise is false balance.

As an example of how different Biden and Trump are, look at Biden’s Justice Department. It has indicted not only prominent Republicans (like Trump) but also prominent Democrats (like Mayor Eric Adams and Senator Robert Menendez), a major Democratic fund-raiser (Sam Bankman-Fried, the now imprisoned crypto executive) and even the president’s son (Hunter Biden).

I also know that some Democrats will argue that the list here is too short and should include Trump’s potential policies on abortion, immigration, climate change and more. But it’s worth distinguishing between policy disputes and democracy itself.

There is nothing inherently anti-democratic about reducing environmental regulations, allowing states to restrict abortion access or deporting people who entered the country illegally. Democrats can make the case that these policies are wrong — and voters can decide who’s right. Voters can also change their minds if the policies don’t succeed.

Attacks on democracy are different. If democracy breaks down, the political system can lose the ability to self-correct.
