McConnell is shooting for a vote on the articles of impeachment and a trial before the end of the year, just so he can kill the whole thing before the beginning of the general election. He knows the collective memory of Americans is very short and very impressionable, and he is hopping that he can put enough time between November 2020 and the Senate trial.

Pelosi is wise to not give him that, even though the Trump has the potential to ruin as much as possible before he leaves.
