Ethnicity- The label which distinguishes yourself as an individual from your cultural roots. (ie: I am of mixed ethnicity (ies) of background in Asian andwhatever else)

Nationality- The label which distinguishes yourself as an individual from where you were naturalized as a citizen of the country of origin either by birth orpledging an oath of citizenship. (ie: Born in the U.S. and therefore naturalized as a citizen here).

Like I wrote in the other thread like this:

As what usually happens, people in here are mixing up nationality and ethnicity. The word ethnicity is more of a convulated term. How I see it...Ethnicity involves thing such as history, language, customs, traditions, ceremonies and values. As for nationality, it is geographic and involves national origin. There are some ethnicities that can also be nationalities (ie. Chinese, Korean,etc). But in some other cases, not so. For example, take the country of Eritrea. Being Eritrean is your nationality, but when it comes to ethnicities, it is more complicated and it gets broken down. As for ethnicities in Eritrea, you can be Tigrinya, Tigre, or Kunama or other ethnicities. Take a country like Ecuador. Being Ecuadorian is your nationality. When it comes down to ethnicity, you can be a mestizo (mixed Amerindian and white), Amerindian, Spanish (white) or black.

As for my ethnicity, I am Arab.


For example, for those saying you are Filipino, that is not your ethnicity. You belong to an ethnic group from this list:

Then the correct terms should be used, such as nationality or heritage.

Even if some post the ethnic group they belong to and no one knows what the hell it is, then that educates the rest of us in reading or knowing about it.Different ethnicities have a varying of different beautiful cultures and they should be represented.
