Preparations are already in motion for a triumphant hometown ticker-tape victory parade, in anticipation of a potential win by the San Francisco 49ers over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.
The big question remains: If the team prevails, would the official celebration take place in the city bearing its name, San Francisco, or in Santa Clara, where it actually plays?
Official plans for a victory parade have not been publicly announced. But according to people familiar with the matter, the parade is tentatively scheduled to take place in San Francisco on Feb. 15 — if the 49ers win the trophy and the weather cooperates.

The date is four days after the championship game on Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The sources spoke to the Chronicle on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the city’s preparations.
They said the route would lead the procession down Market Street, approximately 40 miles from the 49ers’ home turf at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
Mayor London Breed’s office and the San Francisco Police Department declined to comment about a potential celebration in San Francisco.
Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor told the Chronicle she has not talked to the 49ers, or other city officials, about the possibility of a victory parade.
Gillmor added that Santa Clara would welcome a parade, but the 49ers “would have to support it financially. We’re not in a position to do that.” The location of a parade would ultimately be the team’s decision, she said.

Past 49ers championship parades have traversed Market Street in San Francisco, where the team originated. Traditionally, both the city and the team share the costs associated with organizing the event.
Currently, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has not marked any events on Feb. 15 on its log of Special Event Street Closures, and official channels are keeping mum about the prospects of a championship parade.
“We are completely focused on the Super Bowl,” a 49ers spokesperson told the Chronicle. “In the future, if we are in the privileged position of putting on a parade, we’ll let all Bay Area fans know the details when they are available.”
Team officials have a historically strained relationship with Santa Clara, encompassing battles over concert curfews at the stadium to the 49ers’ refusal to share key financial documents about the World Cup soccer matches to be held at publicly owned Levi’s Stadium in 2026.
Gillmor is a longtime critic of the 49ers, while the current majority on the City Council has been friendly toward the team.

Chronicle staff writers Ron Kroichick, J.D. Morris and Aldo Toledo contributed to this report.
