A Hillsboro, Ore., high school senior who was suspended for wearing a pro-Trump, pro-border wall T-shirt to school has won a $25,000 settlement from his school.

Addison Barnes originally wore the shirt, which read “Donald J Trump Border Wall Construction Co: ‘The Wall Just Got 10 Feet Taller’” to his People and Politics class at Liberty High School, knowing that they’d be discussing immigration that day, KGW8 reports.

“The T-shirt was just a representation of my political beliefs,” Barnes said back in May when the incident originally caught headlines.

Others in the school saw the shirt, took offense, and by the time murmurs about the shirt reached an assistant principal, she pulled him aside, giving him the option to cover the shirt with a jacket or get sent home.

Barnes initially covered his shirt before changing his mind.

“I thought to myself, ‘You know this isn’t right, this is my First Amendment right to be able to wear this shirt,’ ” Barnes said. “So I took off the jacket and the assistant principal had seen that and sent for a security guard to escort me out of class.”

How to Talk to a Racist

White liberals, you’re doing it all wrong.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/30/opinion/how-to-talk-to-a-racist.html?smid=tw-nytopinion&smtyp=cur

NASHVILLE — There are still white Southerners who honestly believe that American culture worked better for everyone, white and black alike, under segregation. There are still white Southerners who question how bad slavery really was. When an enslaved black person’s health and strength are needed to guarantee the slaveholder’s livelihood, this argument goes, it just wouldn’t make sense to whip them or starve them or rape them or work them to the point of collapse.

Southerners aren’t alone in believing such mendacity, but the South is where slavery and segregation metastasized, so it may be more concentrated here. Wherever this insidious delusion takes hold, however, it requires a gargantuan ignorance of history to maintain, and there’s a lot of ignorance afoot in the land right now. More people here in Tennessee today drive cars bearing license plates emblazoned with the Confederate battle flag than ever before. A strong majority of Southerners — 61 percent — are committed to keeping their Confederate monuments on public land.

I have exhausted my ability to understand why, deep into the 21st century, I’m still hearing otherwise good-hearted people use the same arguments that white Southerners used to discredit “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” more than 150 years ago: It couldn’t possibly have been that bad. But worse in many ways are the white people who will tell you point blank that the world today — the world they actually live in and can see with their own eyes — can’t possibly be as unfair as black people say it is.

Maybe this is what happens when a person’s only “news” source is the alternative universe of “Fox & Friends.” Or maybe they’re all just racists.

O.K., they’re definitely all racists. But here’s the thing: They don’t believe they are. And the problem with writing off people who don’t recognize this country’s pervasive and enduring culture of white supremacy, much less the ways in which they themselves benefit from it, is simple: Being called a racist almost never causes a racist to wake up. Being called a racist almost never causes a racist to say, “Oh, wow, you’re right.”

I get that it’s hard not to scream “Racist!” at a racist. If you’re a white person who wants to be an advocate, it’s both infuriating and demoralizing to know that the people causing all this suffering are people who look just like you. That much is true about being a white liberal in a culture of white supremacy. But it’s not the only truth.

Here’s what’s also true: Prejudice is endemic to humanity itself. Human beings are tribal creatures — we trust the familiar and are drawn to it; we distrust the unfamiliar and keep our distance. White people, liberal and conservative, often claim not to notice another person’s race — “I don’t even see color,” they argue — but it’s just not true.

We are hard-wired to recognize difference and to view it as an aberration. Noticing difference is not the same thing as hating difference, of course, but I’m not talking about vicious white supremacists here. I’m talking only about garden-variety prejudice, the kind that operates at an unconscious level in everyone. And the difference between an unconscious liberal racist and an unconscious conservative racist is only a matter of degree, not a matter of kind.

Vicious white supremacists live among us, no doubt, and if they get their way they will be marching again on Aug. 12. — the anniversary of their deadly rally in Charlottesville, Va., last year — this time in Washington D.C. Such unrepentant racists will probably never come to understand the harm they have done and are doing to this country, much less the harm they are doing to their own souls. Every minute of public outrage feeds their hunger for validation. Ignore those people. When this episode of “The Ugly American” is finally canceled, they’ll crawl back into their hidy-holes again.

But the grumpy old neighbor who voted for Donald Trump out of frustration with Washington? The high-school classmate who posts an Obama joke on Facebook? The white woman on the plane who tenses up when a Middle Eastern man sits down in the seat beside her? Try not to give up on them yet. These folks are your sisters and brothers. You belong to one another in exactly the same way that you and the targets of their racism belong to one another. Welcome to the Hotel California: You are at the most uncomfortable family reunion ever, and you can never leave.

If you’re a white liberal whose goal is to feel morally superior to such people, go right ahead and urge them to check their white privilege. Call them stupid rednecks. Get online and tweet your feats of moral derring-do in the cause of a more just society. You haven’t made a single thing better for anyone suffering the actual effects of racism, but when has that ever stopped a white person from airing a little righteous indignation?

If, on the other hand, you’re a white liberal whose goal is to foster a more equitable culture, you need to stop yelling “Racist!” at anyone who doesn’t see the world exactly as you do. Somehow you need to find enough common ground for a real conversation about race. Very few people are stupid or irredeemably mean. They’ll listen to what you have to say if they trust you’ll listen to what they have to say back.

So take a breath. When you encounter a person who believes he’s merely honoring his ancestors by driving a car with an image of the Confederate battle flag on the tag, when a Facebook friend announces that it’s disrespectful to take a knee during the national anthem, when you sit down next to someone at the church picnic who genuinely loves and respects the black people they know but who consistently votes for politicians with overtly racist policies, stop for just a moment and take a breath.

Before you say a single word, think of all the times you made an assumption about a stranger that proved to be untrue. Think of the times you found yourself feeling uneasy in the company of strangers of another race — think about how you were forced to interrogate that uneasiness. Think of the plank in your own eye.

To begin a real conversation about racism, start there.

Gotta be frustrating to be a white liberal lol. You wanna do the right thing due to harbouring white guilt. But dont wanna give up your white privilege.

Sorry but seeing white liberals struggling on how to address black folks makes me laugh.

Like i can pretend being referred to as african american upsets me, or i can pretend black upsets me and watch them fumble over their words.

Neither offends me, black american is the safe bet tho lol.

Hastings Police Officer's Civil Rights Lawsuit Settled With Mediated Agreement

A white police officer who was harassed by his colleagues after an ancestry test revealed he was part black has received a $65,000 settlement against the city of Hastings, Michigan.

Police Officer Cleon Brown endured racial taunts after telling his colleagues that he was 18 percent “sub-Saharan African.” Brown’s co-workers proceeded to call him “Kunta” and shouted “Black Lives Matter” when they passed the officer in the hallway. They also hung a Black Santa Clause figure from a Christmas tree with the numbers “18%” written on it.

Following the harassment, Brown filed a lawsuit against the City of Hastings for $500,000 in 2017. He accused officers and the mayor of violating his civil and federal rights in violation of the state’s Whistleblowers’ Protection Act, according to WBCH. He also claimed that the racial taunting caused him emotional distress.

The city countered Brown’s accusations, stating that the officer “often made derogatory comments about African Americans, joked about his race and brought up the topic to other officers.”

Brown’s settlement ended up being $65,000 instead of $500,000.

“Suffice it to say that the process to resolve these matters is less than perfect, so the outcome of the process is less than ideal,” City Manager Jeff Mansfieldsaid. “But, the City Council agreed that entering into this mediated settlement agreement would allow the City to focus its efforts and resources on more productive endeavors in the days ahead.”

Brown has been with the Hastings police department for 20 years. Now, he will resign his position with the city on October 31 and will not be able to seek or apply for a position with the City of Hastings at any time in the future.

Source: Hate Group to be Provided 3 Private Metro Rail Cars Ahead of Unite the Right Rally

Metro's SafeTrack plan will add some additional weekend shutdowns and some of the program's surge schedules will be adjusted, General Manager Paul Wiedefeld announced Tuesday. (ABC7)

WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Sources told members of Metro's largest union that a Ku Klux Klan-affiliated hate group will receive special accommodations following the "Unite the Right" rally in Washington, D.C.

The sources shared with ATU Local 689 that the hate group will be provided with three private Metro rail cars and a police escort that will allegedly stop at the Foggy Bottom Metro Station on August 11 and 12. From there, sources say the group will march through the streets of D.C. before arriving at Lafayette Park for the rally.

ATU Local 689 members say they "have been informed and are encouraged to follow safety protocol in the presence of this hate group if the rumored
special accommodations General Manager Paul Wiedefeld plans to give are true."

Union president Jackie Jeter released the following statement regarding the information:

“Local 689 is proud to provide transit to everyone for the many events we have in D.C. including the March of Life, the Women’s March and Black Lives Matters. We draw the line at giving special accommodation to hate groups and hate speech, especially considering that the courts granted Metro the ability to deny ads on buses and trains that are ‘issue-oriented,’ we find it hypocritical for Mr. Wiedefeld to make these unprecedented special accommodations for a hate group.”

Metro released the following statement to ABC7 News Friday evening in relation to the allegations:

"As we do for all events of this nature, Metro is working collaboratively with law enforcement to ensure safe travel for our customers and employees. Transit Police are engaged in ongoing discussions with MPD, the lead agency for the Aug. 12 event, as well as Virginia State Police and others as to how to keep everyone safe on that day. While details of the plan are security sensitive at this stage, I can tell you that it has *not* been finalized."

ATU Local 689 says more than 80 percent of their members are people of color.

I’m A White, Clean Girl, Don't Arrest Me

Lauren Elizabeth Cutshaw apparently told cops that she shouldn’t be arrested because she is a “very clean, thoroughbred, white girl,” according to a report by the Bluffton Police Department.

According to the Island Packet, Cutshaw’s run-in with officers occurred at around 1:45 a.m. Offices pulled over the 32-year-old after they watched her car speed through a four-way stop sign at 60 miles per hour. She failed sobriety tests and a breathalyzer test showed that her blood alcohol level checked in at a solid .18 percent (the legal limit in South Carolina is 0.08 percent).

Cutshaw continued to list reasons why cops shouldn’t arrest her citing great points of moral character, including the fact that she’s had perfect grades her entire life, she was a cheerleader, she was a sorority girl, she graduated from a “high accredited university,” she was in the National Honors Society, and the fact that her partner is apparently a cop.

I wonder when they post articles like this what's the motive, to confirm what we already believe or to embarrass folks. Just seems odd because in the limited times I had to deal with the police with white colleagues involved the attitude has always been this way like almost how dare you even speak to me I pay your salary blah blah blah.

'I'm A White, Clean Girl,' Says SC Woman Arrested For DUI: Report
The woman gave police a number of reasons why she shouldn't be arrested, including that she had perfect grades, a police report says.

beaufortmugshot-1533764434-9513.jpg

BLUFFTON, SC — A South Carolina woman arrested on drunken driving charges apparently told police "I'm a very clean, thoroughbred, white girl" and "I'm a white, clean girl," using those statements to make the case that she should not be arrested, according to a police report.

Lauren Cutshaw, 32, was arrested early Saturday morning after Bluffton police say she ran through a four-way stop sign while going 64 mph in a 30 mph zone. The arresting officer noticed Cutshaw's eyes were bloodshot and glossy and noticed the smell of alcohol, according to the police report.

The report says Cutshaw told police she had two glasses of wine. Cutshaw was given three tests to determine whether she was drunk before being arrested, according to the report.

The officer again asked Cutshaw how much had to drink and she responded a "couple" of glasses of wine, the report says. Cutshaw told police she was celebrating her birthday when asked how full the wine glasses were, according to the report.

According to the report, Cutshaw gave the following reasons to explain why she should not be arrested:

  • She's had perfect grades her whole life;
  • She was in the National Honors Society;
  • She was a cheerleader;
  • She was on the honor roll;
  • She was a dancer;
  • She was a sorority girl;
  • She said her partner is a cop;
  • She graduated with high honors from a "high accredited university."

The arresting officer wrote in the report that "making statements such as these as a means to justify not being arrested are unusual in my experience as a law enforcement officer and I believe further demonstrate the suspect's level of intoxication."

When police asked Cutshaw what being white had to do with anything, she responded, "You should know what that means," the report says. Later, she again said the officer should know what that means because he's a cop, the report says.

According to the report, Cutshaw also said, "You're a cop you should know based on the people that come in this room."

The report notes that Cutshaw provided a breath sample that showed her blood alcohol content was 0.18 percent. Authorities also found a little more than four grams of marijuana in her car, the report says.

Cutshaw was charged with driving under the influence, speeding, disregarding a stop sign, simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Jail records show that Cutshaw was released Aug. 4, the same day she was booked.
