Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Avatar = Dances With Wolves with blue people.

And technically, Dances was Oscar nominated fare, so there is at least "some" substance to it.

Girls is terrible. Enlightened is boring. They really canceled How to Make it in America for this ****.

I could not understand some of the hype HBO gets when they shows like that live. They have and had excellent shows but I can't ignore the other crap. Then things that are really good ideas or have really great starts don't make it far.

Trying to elevate themselves with that it's not tv it's HBO crap.

Avatar felt like it wasn't even originally in English. Like they knew they were after international money, so they made the story and dialogue as basic and boring and obvious as possible, so that a 5 year old Indonesian kid could follow it.

It's a really awesome screensaver, though. :lol

Most who didn't like Looper are judging it for what it wasn't, rather than what it is. Their expectations affected their viewing too much.

It's not perfect and the time travel issues can affect the payoff (Mr O), but I didn't mind and enjoyed it.

Wait, no I liked Looper. :lol

It just had a lot of highs and lows. Some parts I absolutely loved, some parts just...fatal flaws and missed connections for me.

let's get wasted and make snow angels together. you, me, zik, blood type, and proshares.

I figured you liked Looper, I was just crediting that point to you since you mentioned it earlier in the thread.

Old habits of in-text citation die hard.

So, did anyone else see the Master?

there's a theory that the 3 main characters are the Id, ego, and superego

another theory that Amy adams is the true master of the cause

which wouldn't shock me because punch drunk love had a "hidden" narrative about Superman. And PTA has seemed to adapt Kubrick's style with his last 3 movies. And kubrick was notorious for this in this shining

It just feels like you can't break this down and fit it into nice pieces like a puzzle. I think you are meant to be kind of "unfulfilled" and insignificant

I regret not seeing it in theaters since I've read the cinematography is tremendous. I'll watch it as soon as it's available to rent.

house of cards is GREAT , kevin spacey dropping gems throughout the show

well casted , well acted.....ran right thru the season

I've watched a main scene with Phoenix and Hoffman like 7 times now :lol

spent a few hours on IMDB too.

The movie really struck a cord with me. J, when you see it you gotta write let me know what you think. I don't want to hype it up. I just can't get it out of my head

I think it's PTA's 2001. highly polarizing look at existence. I am not saying it's on the same level I'm just saying I see comparisons in themes. many ways to interpret it

I despise Avatar, it literally is the most over rated movie ever made.

I have to agree. I really can't bring myself to believe its the highest grossing movie of all time. I don't get it. At all. Admittedly, I didn't see it in the theaters, which I'm sure is part if the problem. But if a movie is really that good, you should have to see it in 3D to really appreciate it. Right?

Exactly. Its just garbage and the effects just blinded the masses from the truth. Seeing it on DVD was better because then I actually paid attention to what was going on. I fell asleep on that movie twice before I got to struggle through it until the end. If it was my DVD I would have snapped it in half

I wouldn't say it was garbage but it's definitely overhyped. I've seen it once and have no desire to see it again.

Saw it in the theaters when it came out and I'm not sure whether I liked it or not, need to watch it again. Great performances from Phoenix, Hoffman, and Adams but definitely was not what I was expecting plot wise.

I thought it was good for what it was :smokin

Blue Valentine was great 8/10

Apparently it started to rain at the BAFTAs.... both reactions are adorable

Just watched Pariah, indie movie that won an award at Sundance in 2011. Produced by Spike Lee.

It was really good. Another one of those movies that captures the area, culture, and social interactions of black youth. It's about a black girl that's a lesbian, the butch kind, hiding her secret from her parents and her trying to get in a relationship. Kim Wayans plays the mother and does a really really good job as the kind of black mother that's religious so is obviously against homosexuals all while dealing with her marriage that's falling apart. I know it was suppose to be more of a drama but the similar things going made me laugh a lot since I've seen a lot of it with other girls.

Good watch.

I then watched like half of Do The Right Thing :hat just to see familiar faces and nostalgia.

EDIT

Big J, who is that in the yellow?

Marion Cotillard.

And I've had Pariah on my queue, I'll move it towards the top.

Went thru a lot this weekend.

Sat down and finally watched Caddyshack. Ummmm.......I wish to have my money back. I don't get why that movie is/was so famous. Must be an era thing, because it does NOT hold up well with time. I was not amused, I barely chuckled maybe.

Sat thru Killing them Softly. Crap movie, however, it was a definite feather in Pitt's cap. He was awesome. Reminded me of Lincoln in a way, bad movie with a shining performance. Not Pitt's best or anything, it wasn't Kalifornia, but he was great every scene he was in. Gandolfini was also fun to watch, back in his element, reminded me of Tony in many many ways. Liotta was underused, and the story was pointless as could be. Worth a single glance just to see Pitt's performance, 90 minutes, in out and never watch again.

Rewatched Terminator 3. Someone was talkin about it here at work last week, and I realized I have only seen it one single time. I literally remembered nothing about it but Kristana Loken who I wish would terminate me. She's incredible. She also spoke maybe 9 words the entire movie. Perfect. Trim that to 4 or 5 and we woulda had somethin special there. It made me laugh, that was when Danes was donezo, pre Homeland revitalized. She was really good. The story worked, but without Cameron it was WAY too over the top. Bit cartoony, way too much pointless action, not as refined as Judgement Day. A shame really. I liked the idea they were goin with, the inevitablness of Judgement Day coming, but they couldn't pull it off by smashing every damn thing in sight. Not to mention 500 cops showing up, one single shootout, and not another cop the rest of the movie. Ummmmm.......Anyway, it was worth another glance to refresh my memory.

Wreck it Ralph, caught that with my wife and daughter, they both loved it. Not as good as Despicable Me, but solid. Liked the idea of the video game stuff, good soundtrack, lot of the games were over my head tho. Was hopin to see Mario come runnin thru. :lol Decent watch tho and anything the kid likes = win.

Brighten up your Monday - Zach Galifianakis returns with Between Two Ferns - Oscars edition with Jennifer Lawrence, Christoph Waltz, Anne Hathaway and more - ridiculously hilarious - http://wp.me/p2CCWq-2Cd

I didn't like caddyshack either, nor did I like any of the fletch movies or animal house (& most of those type of comedies from the late 70s or early 80s). Just isn't my steelo I guess...

Caddyshack is hilarious.

This. I probably first saw it back in the 80s sometime, but it still holds up for me today. I own it and probably watch it once a year or so, at least. Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray are brilliant. Chevy Chase is good and Ted Knight is actually really funny in the straight man role. Aside from the clothes, cars and music, it doesn't feel dated to me at all. I've seen other movies from around the same era that I felt were much more dated.

All that said, I could see me viewing it a little differently if I literally saw it for the first time today.

thats like watching pryor and saying "i dont get it , its not that funny"

reason: 2 generations of comics stole the black guy/white gut bits and beat them seneseless

but he's still a genius.for creating and molding standup into what it is , you compare him to

the comics that came before him and he's a genius

try and think of a comedy that came before caddyshaq that make you burst out in tears.......

you cant compare it to the movies of today that are funnier because they've sucked the life out of caddyshaq

caddyshaq took comedy 20 years in the future.
