Question about New York City in the 80's and 90's.

When I went to NYC me and my half sister found New Yorkers to be very nice.

People confuse rudeness with the New York way of life. It's a fast-paced city, and people don't have time for BS. If someone is short with you, it's not because they don't like you, it's how they communicate there. My favorite saying about New York is: "if you're not going anywhere, you're just in the way". It's totally accurate. The attitude of New Yorkers has a bad reputation because of the way the city (and its people) moves.

When I was very young, someone cut my father's pockets in the elevator to steal his wallet.

pretty much everything else that was said in this thread is what I saw as well.

It wasn't until I got older that I realized how raw it was. As a kid I would always see crack viles on the ground, prostitutes on corners and abandoned houses. Those are some of my earliest memories. Things got much better late 80s and into the 90s.

I can consign this. I didn't know how bad it was or how real it was until I was much older and reflected on my childhood. Growing up I thought all that was the norm.

Good Points... I have asked people here from DC would they move to new york and most of them said it is too busy for them, but my thing is, if you're from DC (Which is a city), how would NYC be any different? I mean, it's both the city life..
as dc said, dc is way slower. ive only been to manhattan a few times, but its always busy. in dc after say like 6:30 pm during the week, down town can be a ghost town for the most part. also outside of a good number of places in NW, SW, and some NE sections, DC-proper is very suburban.

back in the day i used to live in a two bedroom apt with my mother, grandmother, aunt, her four children and my other aunt. :smh:

-a dude on the train jacked off and came on my aunt's trench coat during rush hour
-my cousin and his friend got held up in broad daylight and had to strip down to their boxers
-i saw a man strung out drill a hole through his leg, again in daylight
-again, in daylight i saw a man jump on top of a car and cling to it in traffic
-again, in daylight, saw a bus get robbed (the bus had a special "thing" for that where it said call police or some **** on the front of it instead of the letter and number)
-feds ran in my apt with guns drawn, looked under the beds, in closets, etc. for the dude my aunt dated i mentioned in an earlier post

if you had an 8 ball jacket or pumps, your life was on the line.

etc. etc.

I think it was the same all over the east coast its just NYC is bigger thats all. Growing up in Philly at the same time everything people said happened there happened too. Its just NYC is so much bigger its just going to be more but like people have said until you get older you just thought it was the norm seeing that stuff.

Just goes to show how diverse NYC really is. Born in 88 and haven't experienced any of the stuff that's being discussed in here but I do know it was prevalent. My area was fairly quiet and tightly knit. Everyone knew one another within the neighborhood. School yards were the hangout spot. Graffiti was very popular. Summers were vibrant and full of life. It's become so diverse now that nobody can relate on a cultural level.

All hype.

But Man when I went to NY for the first time, I felt it in the air. ( Beans: )

There was just something about being there that made me feel so damn good. I can't even explain it.

"All hype" and yet......

OK.

Grew up in NY in the 80's raised by a single mom and was sent to Miami during a lot of summer's and winters to spend vacations with family.

Between NY in the 80's and Miami in the 80's.....you grow up fast. And strong.

I don't mean to sound like a tourist, but I LOVE NYC (I am from the DMV by the way lol),

Tourist :smh: *teh*

By the way Native New Yorkers are rude, but most of the D'bags you see in the city who are rude are the transplants who bring they arses over here from around the country/globe.

I am from DC. I naturally have a dislike for anything NY. All hype.

Most people I meet from the D/M/V area especially DC I have never gotten along with, they always have this fake tough guy persona going on.

Only one guy from my job that I work at right now is cool most of the time.

This.

I hate the stereotype we get about being rude. That is far from truth. I find that the rudest new yorkers are the ones that aren't even from here/ those who came here from other countries. Natives generally are more level headed.

I didn't live there. Only visited my aunt in queens so often. But I heard tons of stories about how bad it used to be. Decepticonz running around, lo lifes, chains being snatched etc

There was a tread which a whole bunch of info about it

Yeah the rich/pretentious affluent who aren't even from around here (you can usually tell by the neighborhoods they live in) come here look at native NY'ers with a smug look on their face >D like what are we doing here.

And don't ask them a question/directions, or go into a store they think you can't afford to buy anything from.

Now Times Square is all glitz and glamour...I heard back in the 80's (before my time) it was full of porno shops and mad grimey.

transformers b?

well, i'll shed some light.

ny was ROUGH. typical ****:

-someone got robbed for their coat/sneakers like every other night on the news
-dime/nickel bags everywhere
-trash everywhere
-bums laid out on the sidewalk
-drug dealers
-graffiti was everywhere (much more than now)
-africans (no offense) with the carpets laid out selling bricks in boxes pushing them off as radios
-africans on the corner selling watches
-mad ppl strung out
-gunshots in broad daylight
-random killings for no reason. ****** didn't give a ****

it was nothing for someone to run up on someone and blow their brains out. didn't need a reason.

-lots of ppl got robbed
-food was better
-the culture was better

anybody my age or older has stories of wild **** for days.
NYC in the 80s was NO JOKE.  Ed Koch and Giuliani was goin off back in the day.  Watching a documentary of NYC in the 80s will really open your eyes how bad NYC was and how it grew to be a great city.

South Bronx, East Tremont is STD, AIDS, all types of bugs land.  You don't want to date ANYONE who live there.

:smh: Unfortunately you've been around the wrong DC cats.

 Or maybe it's just YOU.

I usually get along well with NYers.
