There's a difference in the word Racist and Prejudice

rac·ism  (rā′sĭz′əm)
n.
1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

prej·u·dice (ˈprejədəs)

n

1. preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

Racism is systematic; the power to inflict control socially, economically and politically based on color.  Example: Jim Crow, Slavery, etc)

The definition clearly show that African American and minority people can't be racist in America.  African Americans never felt particular race is superior to others. African Americans never been in power for "Discrimination" except for  "prejudice based on race" , the definition explains. Prejudice is not racism. Anybody can be "prejudice" or "bigot" I can hire only "big women" for my job, (sorry no skinny women = prejudice). But I don't hire "big black women" for my job, (sorry no blacks = racism). Big difference.

Okay hopefully this explains, minorities can't be racist but can be prejudice. Only caucasians can be Racist because they have been the apex predator to all other races throughout the history of time, Europe has been one of the most detrimental continents to this planet and there are facts that back this up. Caucasians will have an unfair advantage when it comes to everything in life because that's how it has been through the history of this earth. Now not all caucasians understand this and bring up the usual " you can be racist against us" but we can't because at the end of the day whatever a minority says to a caucasian will have zero effect, thus it is prejudice, a thought. Racism is prejudice enacted. Racism effects minorities, minorities prejudice does not effect caucasians.
 
What if a black owner didn't hire "big white women?"

Racism is prejudice based on race. Period.


Somewhere along the line someone decided to addle the definition of racism, with the meaning of institutional racism. The claim was made that blacks couldn't be racist, some people liked the sound of that and decided to run with it. Institutional racism is a system of control based on race, racism is not.

Anyone can be a racist. Whether or not that persons racism has practical effects or not is a different story. But even that can go both ways, see: "White teacher wins racial discrimination lawsuit" thread.

According to OP's definition, a poor white man with no power can not be racist. This is simply not true. Anyone has the capacity for racism, because racism by definition, is nothing but bigotry based on race.

to me prejudice = thoughts, racism = actions

like anyone can have biased/prejudice/opinions, but what separates the two notions is the active process of carrying out those thoughts based on race/nationality etc (policy-wise or violent crimes etc)

Racism to me means you think other races are inferior for whatever reason. Sometimes people try to make things too complicated.
 
Prejudice makes people not like you on the internet.
Throw in a few subtle race jokes on any thread and you'll be the life of the party.

Racism is a form of prejudice. All racist statements and acts are also acts of prejudice. However, not all prejudice is racially motivated.

There's also a difference between racism and systemic/institutional racism.

Racism can be practiced by anyone of any race. If I say and truly believe that all asian people deserve to die simply for being asian, then that's a racist statement and I'm a racist, regardless of the fact that I'm black. The belief that I as a black man can't be racist is asinine. If you say that I can be racist to asians but not racist towards whites that's even sillier.

Systemic racism requires the efforts of multiple people in order to successfully place and keep the members of another race in a disadvantageous situation e.g. South African Apartheid, British occupied India. All members of the dominant race in such a society benefit from and are protected by this system, regardless of social standing. Any decision that they make, that negatively impacts any member of the suppressed race or races (in a significant way), helps in upholding the system of oppression in place, even if that was not the intent. Conversely, any attempt by a member of the oppressed race to besmirch or disenfranchise a member of the dominant race will more than likely fail. This is where the "Minorities can't be racist" rhetoric comes from. A perfect example of a systemically racist society would be America. The system itself is older than the country. It has been here since it's birth, thus it is the normal state of affairs. As the country has evolved, so too has the system. Where it once was blatant, it has now become subtle. Normally obvious only to those who have suffered and continue to suffer at the hands of it.
