I can’t speak for NYC or everyone who takes public transportation, but a lot of the issues I read about NYC subway/buses are also prevalent in the Bay Area. Public transportation here is only worth it if you don’t have to show up to work at a specific time, because there are delays damn near every damn day because of train malfunctions, police activity, fiends causing trouble, etc.
It’s gotten to the point where many people (including me) would rather drive and spend an extra 20-30 minutes to commute, because at least you have an idea of when you’re going to get to work, while taking BART/Muni/Caltrain is almost a gamble. I got yelled at by my former boss multiple times for showing up late frequently, and it wasn’t even my fault. She finally believed me once she started experiencing these issues, and she let me start expensing my Uber rides from the station where I had to switch trains at (because the connecting train refused to show up on time for at least an entire month)
I love public transportation IF it is done right. Go to any major city in Europe and Asia and compare the systems with the ones in the US. Damn near always on time, pristine, trains/buses every 2 mins during rush hour, barriers to prevent suicides, etc
There’s nothing more infuriating then getting to a train station and then getting a notice for “20 minute delay due to signal issues” because these crusty *** transit systems are using run down technology from a century ago
