Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

I didn’t jump on the MF Doom bandwagon till Mad Villainy then I went back and listened to his old discography. I was big on CD then and went out of my way to hunt for a copy of Doomsday which had stopped printing by then.

The dudes production was low key unappreciated. Ghost jumped on several of his beats after listening to Doom’s Special Herb collection:

I definitely wasn’t following DOOM back then. I only really started listening to some of his stuff these past couple years.

I’ve always seen it as that east coast sound was inspired by soul music/motown , real instrumentation off grainy vinyl. Whereas the west coast sound was more inspired by electronic funk, a lot of synths and effects.

Nah, because the east coast was also using Parliament, Bootsy, Zapp and James Brown before Dre. EPMD, Public Enemy and X-Clan used funk. A bunch of producers just didn't do it, because it was no bitting allowed and hiding sample usage because of lawsuits became a thing.
