I would say yes. Sure, without religion existing there probably would have been extreme stuff going on like barbarian slaying and the strongest and powerful doing whatever they wan type of stuff, but that has been going on anyway. I think it would have plateau eventually to a peaceful state somewhere along the lines. Probably maybe even more quicker than we all did. I also feel that the average human would have been a stronger, smarter, bigger, better human if religion did uphold so long as the way it did.
True, theres bad apples everywhere. I also feel there is a lot of mental issues (like narcissism and lack of empathy) going on in this society, but it's perceived as normal because it doesnt hurt anyone or not skitz.
Yes. Although I dont think the control part holds anymore. Its on a life of its own now. But why cant this be believable? Just because most people believe in it doesnt mean its true. Cant there be a possibilty that most people are stupid? Think of the average person. Then think of the average of the average people. Think of how dumb that person is. Think of why Americas Got Talent is an actual tv show. Think of why Jenner lips is something to talk about. Think about how you can make a dance or hiphop song with 4 chords in it and become a millionaire and nobody knows the jazz musician at the local jazz bar. Tell me why the instagram sluts have proverbs on their profile. Tell me how singing "powerful" gospel is any different than singing out of tune or just reading it out loud.Think about how Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are above Bernie Sanders. Because humans are emotional creatures. And most of them are weak/dumb. If anything, seratonin is the true god.
You think the world we live in is the way its supposed to be. But it just really became like that because of history. So just cause whatever you see happening now in life, doesnt mean its right...back then you might have unpopular opinions like blacks are equal to whites, or gays arent equal to hetero people. At that time they felt it was right because they were in that time.
I agree with this. Religion is just a persons interpretation of it. If you ask 2 people to write down what it truly is, you will never have the same answer. Therefore it is just an mental/emotional thing. Its just comfort. They dont want to be alone. Or they dont want/cant think that far. It sounds good that there is something there. It all boils down to the persons standards of critical thinking. one persons explanation might be enough for them, but might not be for another person. The second person can have different roots of thoughts that the first person doesnt even have on their brainmap so its impossible for that person to understand. Its like if a robot version 2 was trying to teach a robot version 1 something but its not working because version 2 has files/firmware that doesnt even exist in version 1s files/firmware.

you're right, reading back through the pages, but I'm just offering him an avenue to discovery. I know finding myself has given me a more complete worldview...maybe it'll have the same effect for him that legitimate research would.

I'll start off by saying neither of my parents are religious, they even chose to marry through a civil union instead of a religious marriage. Not sure if civil union is the correct term, but basically an official from the city marries you instead of the church. Atheism was never forced on me, not that I can recall anyway.
I went to a catholic school both in elementary and highschool.
Despite being a catholic elementary school by name and offering catholic class, they also offered an alternative for atheists or people of other religions.
Ironically, that alternative class was called "ethics". I don't exactly recall why I chose to switch to the alternative class by the second grade. By that point I was also placed in the 6th grade level category for reading class so I'm guessing that had something to do with it.
I was also a bit of a science geek from a very early age and only read adult books throughout elementary.
In the second grade it was just me and my muslim friend in the ethics class
The class contained a bit of everything. It started out as more of creativity class, crafting things, painting, drawing, ...
It went more towards the study of all major religions in the following grades. Towards the 5th and 6th grade is where it really became a philosophy/ethics class.
We also gradually got more students opting out of catholic class as time went on. We started with 2 people and a few grades later we had about 20 people. Most people at my school didn't believe in god by the time we graduated, they just continued catholic class to receive the gifts from their communions
My highschool was also a catholic school but religion class involved the study of all religions, even Hinduism and Buddhism. There was a bit more focus on the history of christianity but definitely no indoctrination or forcing going on. I didn't know anyone who was religious at that point aside from the muslims. Nowadays (I'm 22 now) I don't know a single person under the age of 60 that is religious, except muslims again. Churches are growing emptier each year around here.

It was never meant as some evil underworld entity that punishes you for doing wrong. You punish yourself through your own actions and desires. You cause your own suffering by the decisions you make and the paths and values you establish in your life.
On one hand, your five senses are the root of your desires, your faults. Seeking the stimulation of these senses, in some cases, is ultimately what causes all the evil in the world. On the other hand you need your senses. Without them you could not learn, you could not perceive and grow. Knowledge flows through your sensory perception. As an example, one could desire money or material wealth. Only through fulfilling these desires can you truly understand that it is ultimately unfulfilling. Money won't make you happy, but it's difficult to fully grasp this without having desired and acquired money and experienced that lack of fulfillment. That is why "he" made "him".
