Cashmere is a fine wool from Kashmir goats (also called Capra hircus and Pashmina goats). These goats are special because they produce two layers of fleece: a straight, coarse outer hair called the guard hair and the soft undercoat used for cashmere wool. The process to separate the coarse hair from the cashmere fibers is very involved and can take up to two weeks. China, Mongolia, India, Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey are the leaders of raw cashmere production. However, Italy, Scotland, and Japan are well known for their production of fabric and garments made from the raw cashmere.

Other than being fashionable and “luxurious”…what is the big deal? According to CCMI (Cashmere and Camel Manufacturers Institute), it is extremely durable and will last for years. It will not pill up like other wools after being worn several times and washed. It’s also known to adjust to the weather… keeping you cool when the weather is hot and very warm as the weather cools.

Reading that article makes me want a nice cashmere sweater now, light pink with white stripes. :smokin

good quality for the price.. cashmere sweaters can go up to 4 figures so you should know your budget.. the ones made in Scotland are usually the best.. Johnston's sweaters makes the best affordable sweaters I can think of . Check Sierra trading post.

I copped a red cashmere sweater about 5 years ago from wal mart and the quality was actually impressive, especially for 20 bux. I worked at Dillard at the time and they felt identical to the sweaters we sold for around 70.

PutThisOn.com has some good education on this. You'll probably be able to find some decent ones for cheap, but they basically won't last as long.

Good cashmere is made from the longest fibers. It is dense, resilient and lightweight (though it may be offered in multiple layers, or plys). The texture should almost approach a cotton jersey. It will also (new) be a little less soft than the cheap stuff. The short fibers in cheap cashmere are loose right from the start, so they feel soft to the touch. They’ll pill and tear. The best cashmere feels smooth as much as it feels soft. Go to a super-fancy store, and touch some Loro Piana branded cashmere, and you’ll get a feeling for what I’m talking about.

Look for cashmere that feels tightly woven, with a solid feeling, rather than a fluffy feeling. The weave should feel dense, heavy and smooth. A thin cashmere sweater should be warm and solid. Hand wash once a year or so, dry flat, and you’ll have a treasure you can enjoy for a decade or more.
