So I was listening to the Illmatic Vol. Real Talk

illmatic is one of my favorite albums next to reasonable doubt and ready to die. when i was a kid the first tape i bought was illmatic because i got goodgrades, and i fell in love with the tape. i always make sure to have a fresh copy in my collection.

Oh brother...You only liked ONE song?? Really?? Front to back this album is butter. It's not conforming when its the ENTIRE PLANET EARTH saying the samething. It's law. Go clean your ears out, listen again, delete this thread, then come back and apologize for tripping...Some people are just contrary..

N.Y. State of Mind-

"I never sleep cuz sleep is the cousin of death"
"I ain't the type of brother made for you to start testin, give me a smith-n-wesson i'll have %*!%*# undressin"

Life's a *#+#!-

"Keepin it real, packin steel, gettin high cuz life's a *#+#! and then you die"
"I woke up early on my born day, I'm twenty years of blessing the essence of adolescent leaves my body now I'm fresh in"
"Time is Illmatic keep static like wool fabric"

The World is Yours-

"I keep fallin, but never fallin six feet deep
I'm out for presidents to represent me (Say what?)
I'm out for presidents to represent me (Say what?)
I'm out for dead presidents to represent me"

"There's no days, for broke days, we sell it, smoke pays
While all the old folks pray, to Je-sus' soakin they sins in trays
of holy water, odds against Nas are slaughter
Thinkin a word best describin my life, to name my daughter"

"Walk the blocks wit a bop, checkin Danes plus the games people play, bust the problems of the world today"

Halftime-

"Atlanta ain't Brave r, I'll pull a number like a pager"
"And I'm a Nike head, I wear chains that excite the feds"
"I drop jewels, wear jewels, hope to never run it with more kicks than a baby in a mother's stomach"
"This goes out to Manhattan, the island of Staten
Brooklyn and Queens is livin fat and
The Boogie Down, enough props, enough clout
Ill Will, rest in peace, yo, I'm out"

Memory Lane-

"One for the money Two for %#*%* and foreign cars Three for Alize %*!%*# deceased or behind bars"
"I decipher prophecies through a mic and say peace"

One Love-

"I gave your mom dukes loot for kicks, plus sent you flicks"
"So I comes back home, nobody's helping shorty doo-wop rollin two Phillies together in the Bridge we called 'em oowops"

One Time For Your Mind-

"When I was ten, I was a hip-hoppin shorty wop known for rocking microphones and twisting off a 40 top"
"I'm new on the rap scene, brothers never heard of me yet I'm a meance, yo, police wanna murder me"
"I wreck @#+# so much, the microphone'll need a paint job"

Represent-

"I drink a little vodka, spark a L and hold a Glock for the fronters, wannabe ill %%!*!# and spot runners"
"Could use a gun Son, but ++!* bein the wanted man but if I hit rock bottom then I'ma be the Son of Sam"

It Ain't Hard to Tell-

"Hit the Earth like a comet"
"It ain't hard to tell, I kick a skill like Shaquille holds a pill Vocabulary spills I'm +Ill+ plus +Matic"
"My poetry's deep, I never fell Nas's raps should be locked in a cell It ain't hard to tell"

ya know what, this is an album you need to play on your ipod with some earphones in...so you can hear the lyrics perfectly clear. no need to rock the bass withthis album...the lyrics do the justice.

I like this album, i dont think its the G.O.A.T. though, to be honest i always though Ready to Die was better, not say illmatic isnt classic but IMO ready todie is better.

I find myself bumping that entire album front to back and half the people out here in Cali have no idea who it is.

I have to say my two favorite songs are the world is yours and one love

Respect for standing by your opinions. Illmatic is one of my favorites, but I know how it is to not really like a classic. Dr. Dre's second album was"meh" to me.

In my opinion, you cannot fully appreciate an album (not just Illmatic) unless you listen to it right when the album dropped. You have to take into contexteverything else that was going on in the music industry and in the world. Not talking about the OP, but the impact of some 17 year old listening to Illmaticfor the first time in 2009 will not be the same as some 17 year old listening to it for the first time in 1994.

I agree with that, but at the same time, Illmatic is timeless.

The hip-hop thriller minus the 30 diamond plaques.

I don't. Why is it such a prevailing thought process amongst hip hop fans that young heads are incapable of grasping or appreciating an albumunless they were there. I definitely agree, context is important, and their are definitely feelings and emotions that one would have to have experienced thealbum when it dropped to fully comprehend. But from a purely musical standpoint, I really think the idea is just basura. You just got a lot of young headsthese days who are so out of touch with what the music is/should be do to their environment. It has nothing to do with age. You don't hear yourgrandfather telling ya pops that he can't appreciate Kind of Blue because he wasn't their to experience it himself do you?

And unless you rivaling Grandpa SEND ONE in age, weren't none of you 17 in 1994 anyway.

Well as I stated in my original post, that is my opinion. You have your opinion and that's cool.

Look at it like this... when I was growing up my mom used to play Marvin Gaye in the house. I loved the song What's going on. No matter how muched I lovedthat song though, it would never have the same impact on me as it did my mother. My mother lived through the things he was saying. The music is the music I getthat. The message in that song was bigger than music though, therefore the impact on her will always be greater for her.

I was 13 when Illmatic dropped btw.

But Illmatic didn't have the social impact that What's Going On Had. If we were talking about Fear Of A Black Planet or Straight Outa Comptonthen thatwould be different. The everyday life !!** Nas conveyed on Illmatic transcends the early 90's, aside from a bar or two, it's not restricted to anyparticular set of events from the time period.

I was 8 when Illmatic dropped, you really think the the five years between me and you, or the five year difference between you and someone in their 30'sdrastically changes our appreciation of Illmatic?

Again, I was talking about the music specifically but since you brought it up, Illmlatic's message just doesn't pertain to anything particular enoughto a set time period that it's appreciative value would lessen between anybody from our generation. 20 years from now you might have a point but I'mjust not seeing it.

I forgot to say at this point in my life with my love affair/on again off again relationship with hip hop I couldn't careless about somebody claimingIllmatic is (the most) overrated or I'm just not feeling it.

At the end of the day that's on you and you're !$**+% up taste in music.
